El primer trabajo remunerado que conseguí fue como traductora freelance, concretamente como traductora audiovisual. Para los que no sepáis lo que significa, consiste en subtitular al español las series, películas, documentales, etc... que soléis ver en versión original, y aunque en España siempre se ha llevado mucho ver este tipo de materiales doblados, cada vez se está poniendo más de moda la opción de subtitulado. Tengo que decir que a veces no solo es traducción, sino que también puede ser transcripción de audios en español adaptando el texto para personas sordas, por ejemplo. A lo que iba, en realidad nunca me había visto a mí misma trabajando en esto, entre otras cosas, porque mi interés por la subtitulación empezó siendo un hobby para aprender. Explicándome mejor, hace unos años mi nivel de inglés en cuanto a audición y escritura no era el mejor del mundo, y decidí que sería una buena manera de practicar tratando de crear subtítulos de películas en inglés, poniendo mucha atención en lo que decían y luego transcribiendo en inglés, porque al principio no traducía al español. Así mejoré la escritura y la audición. Me llevó mi tiempo, pero aprendí vocabulario nuevo, y hasta me llegué a saber de memoria algunos diálogos de tanto que los repetía. Poco a poco esa afición fue convirtiéndose en algo más serio para mí cuando por fin me animé a mandar mi CV a una empresa de subtitulación estadounidense, donde para mi gran alegría pasé a formar parte del equipo de traductores españoles, y por fin pude pude decir algo ante la famosa frase "¿y en qué trabajas?". Como decía antes, no es un trabajo con el que yo soñara de pequeña; sí, de esos planes de trabajo que todos los niños tenemos antes de tiempo, que van desde ser veterinarios hasta ser astronautas. Al final la mayoría de personas acaba trabajando de lo que menos espera, y en mi caso, he acabado trabajando de algo que empezó siendo casi un simple hobby, y hoy tengo la suerte de decir que estoy ganando dinero con ello. Con esto os puedo decir dos cosas: una, es que si sabéis dónde buscar, si sabéis moveros, y sobre todo si sabéis insistir y usar el ingenio, podéis acabar trabajando incluso de vuestro propio hobby, algo que para mucha gente es la panacea; y dos, hay que tener mucho cuidado con los planes a largo plazo, y en este sentido me voy a explayar.
¿Es recomendable tener un único objetivo en mente?
Antes os dije que en realidad muy poca gente acaba trabajando de lo que siempre soñó de niño, porque siempre se interponen otras cosas por el medio. A veces esto es inevitable porque la vida en sí no es estable, y tampoco tiene porque ser malo siempre y cuando esa decisión sea única y exclusivamente vuestra. Hay que recalcar esto porque veo que mucha gente ve como un fracaso pensar que va a trabajar de una cosa y al final acaba en otra. Yo cuando era estudiante también me veía trabajando algún día en la ONU (lo mío siempre fue la modestia) y al final se cruzó en mi camino el trabajo freelance. ¿Y qué? Simplemente vi en esto una buena oportunidad, y además haciendo algo que me gustaba. Suerte de mí que supe tener la mente abierta y no obcecarme con un único objetivo en mente. A algunos esto les puede parecer una visión muy conformista, pero yo creo que no tiene nada que ver, porque el conformismo es esa actitud que se toma cuando se escoge el camino que sea, aunque no te guste, porque simplemente se piensa que no va a haber nada mejor que eso. Funciona un poco como con la política, que se acaba escogiendo siempre lo mismo no por apetencia o por afinidad con unas ideas u otras, sino porque tendemos a creer que no puede existir nada mejor que las opciones que ya tenemos. Y para finalizar este artículo de freelance-reflexión, (no sé por qué cada vez que hablo del freelance se convierte en una reflexión social) os diré una de mis frases favoritas a tener en cuenta, y es que no es importante cómo se empieza, sino cómo se acaba. The first paid job I had was as a freelance translator, as an audiovisual translator specifically. For those who don't know what is that, it's about subtitling movies, tv series, documentaries, etc... from one language to another; in my case, I create spanish subtitles for videos which are in english. Although in Spain it's very popular to watch dubbed audiovisual materials, subtitles are becoming fashionable to watch them in original version. I have to say that it's not always about translation, it also can be spanish transcriptions to adapt the text for deaf audience, for example. I never could have imagined myself doing this kind of job because my interest in subtitling was a hobby to learn at first, among other things. Let me explain this, some years ago my writing and listening skills in english were not good enough, so I decided that it would be a great way to practice to create subtitles from movies in english, paying a lot of attention to what they said and then transcribing it into english, because at first I didn't translate into spanish. In this way it was how I improved writing and listening. It took me a while, but I learned new vocabulary and I even learned by heart some dialogues after hearing them over and over. Little by little, this hobby became something serious when I decided to send my resume to an american subtitling company, where I was accepted to be part of the spanish translators team, which it was a great joy for me, and from that moment I finally was able to say something on the question "what is your job?". As I said before, this was not the job of my dreams when I was a child; yes, that kind of future plans that every child has had at a young age, from being veterinary to be astronauts. After all, most of us end up working as something we don't expect, and in my case, I ended up working on a field which was more a hobby than a job to me, and nowadays I'm lucky enough to say that I'm earning money with that. So I can tell you two things: one, if you know where to look for, if you know where to move, and if you insist and you are witty, your hobby can be your job, something that it's a panacea for many people; and two, you need to be careful with long-term plans and I'm going to talk a lot about that.
It is recommendable to have just one objective in mind?
I said before that few people can say they're working in the job of their dreams since there were children, because there are always other things that appear in the middle of the way. Sometimes this is inevitable because life is not stable itself, but this might not be as bad as it seems if we are the ones who make the choices. It's important to remark that, because there are a lot of people who thinks they have failed in life if they always have had a specific job in mind, and then they end up having a different job. When I was a student, I portrayed myself working at the United Nations some day too (I always have been really modest), and at the end I found the freelance world in my way. So what? I just saw a very good opportunity doing something that I love. Fortunately, I was open-minded and I didn't get obsessed with just one objective in mind. Some people may consider that this vision is really conformist, but I think it has nothing to do, because conformism is based on just chosing whatever way out you have although you don't like it, just because you think there is anything better than that. It works like politics, you always choose one party or another not due to political affinities, but because we tend to believe that there are no better options than the ones which already exist. To conclude this freelance-reflection article (I don't know why everytime I talk about freelance, it turns out to be a social reflection), I will tell you one of my favourite sentences to take into account: it's not so important how you begin, but how you finish.
