Gatsby was... great / Y Gatsby si fue grande

Puede que mi opinión este viciada de origen, dado mi fanatismo por la década de los 20's, y la gran simpatía que siento por el estilo y películas de Baz Luhrman, así como las actuaciones de el gran Leonardo Di Caprio; pero no puedo negar que me encantó el Gran Gatsby. 
Maybe the fact that really admire the fashion and architecture of the 1920's,  that I like and respect Baz Luhrman's style and movies, and that I enjoy Leonardo Di Caprio's acting is a great influence for me to say it, but I loved The Great Gatsby movie.

Como les mencionaba aquí, mis grandes motivantes para ver esta película son: el  ver una de mis épocas favoritas representadas en la pantalla grande, disfrutar del "paisaje visual", de la elegancia y sofisticación de la moda ( incluidos los lindísimos vestidos de Miuccia Prada, los trajes de Brooks Brothers y por supuesto que las impresionates joyas de Tiffany & Co.), la facilidad con que Baz Luhrman me hace añorar otros tiempos, en los que los buenos modales eran del dominino público; y el conocer un poco más de la aclamada obra de Scott Fitzgerald.
I had such great expectations for this movie, like I said here, and the main reasons where: to see one of my favorite times in history respresented in the big screeen, enjoying the visual feast of the 1920's elegance and sophisticated fashion ( including the stunning Miuccia Prada dresses, the Brooks Brothers suits, and of course, the show-stopping Tiffany & Co. jewelry), the ease with which Baz Luhrman makes me yearn for another time, in which good manners were a common practice; and last but not least, to know a bit more of Scott Firtzgerald's work.

Así que aquí les platico lo que más me gusto de esta película.(Scroll down to read the English version of this)
5. Las actuaciones de Leo Di Caprio,Carey  Mulligan y Joel Edgerton.Leo como siempre me convenció y conmovió, yo si creo que ya hace rato que le deben un Oscar. En el caso de Carey, la verdad es que hubo escenas en las que la aluciné, como también hubo momentos en que la compadecí, creo que el papel le queda muy bien.
La gran revelación fue Joel Edgerton, es la primera vez que lo veo en una película pero creo que es un villano al estilo de Joaquin Phoenix, que su personaje no ha ni abierto la boca y ya sabes que lo vas a odiar.4. La modernización de los años 20's, a través de la música. Esto es algo que el Señor Luhrman también logró en Romeo + Juliet, tomar una historia de otros tiempos y hacerla un poco más cercana a  los nuestros. En una entrevista con el equipo de producción, se menciona que, parte de la esencia de ésta década, es la renovación, el mirar al futuro, y qué mejor forma de representarlo que renovando las tendencias de la época. La voz de Lana del Rey queda perfecta con su canción "Young and beautiful", que usan a la precisión en diferentes momentos de la película. A pesar de que el soundtrack está mayoritariamente compuesto por música actual (Jay Z, Fergie, Florence and the Machine, etc), por fortuna el Charleston también estuvo presente.
Lo que si es que cuando salió la canción de Will I am no pude evitar torcer los ojos, creo que es el único que sale sobrando.

3. Ese sentido de velocidad y decadencia.No sé como describir la técnica de edición de Luhrman, pero si vieron Romeo + Juliet sabrán a lo que me refiero. Escenas rápidas, llenas de atractivos visuales, que logran trasmitir esa joie de vivre, y al mismo tiempo una dramática trama. En mi opinión, la película logra resumir de lo que pasaba socialmente en los 20's en Estados Unidos, excesos, lujo, glamour y riquezas que irían en picada con la Gran Depresión.                                          Scene from The Great Gatsby / Escena de El Gran Gatsby
2.Abundancia en atractivos visuales.
No me refiero a los vestidos, que sin duda están preciosos, sino a la decoración, la ambientación, incluso los jardines o carros, que yo no conozco mucho al respecto, pero eran lindísimos.En verdad que yo quiero comprar esta película apenas salga en Blue Ray, para ver detenidamente los detalles, como el monograma de Jay Gatsby que adornaba los pisos de su mansión y herrería.      Scene from The Great Gatsby / Escena de El Gran Gatsby
1. Los vestuarios de Carey Mulligan y Elizabeth Debicki.Uno de mis museos favoritos es el Museo Real de Ontario (Royal Ontario Museum), y en especial el pabellón dedicado a la vida en los 20's. Me dio escalofrío ver los zapatos , vestidos y equipaje original de la época. Todo tan detallado, verdaderas obras de arte , ejemplos de talento y dedicación. En la galería también se exhiben muebles y accesorios personales.Al ver The Great Gatsby entendí que es justo esa añoranza de modernidad y cambio que tanto me atraen. La evolución basada en la funcionalidad, el lujo y la elegancia.

So here's what I enjoyed the most about this movie.5. Leonardo Di Caprio, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton's acting.
As usual, Leo made me care for the character while being so convincing. Jeez! I saw Romeo + Juliet in my teenage years and I would blush and giggle at Romeo's adventures, this time I found myself doing the same with Jay Gatsby! Someone give him an Oscar already!I didn't know what to expect from Carey's acting, but I think she was perfect as Daisy Buchannan, believe me, I also wanted to slap her during a couple of scenes, just as I felt sorry for her at other moments of the story.As per Mr. Edgerton, I see him as such a good villain!! Just like Joaquin Phoenix, his character hasn't even open his mouth when you already hate him.4. Bringing the 20's music to modern days.This was a great move by the The Great Gatsby crew, like Catherine Martin mentions in the following interview, the  idea of the twenties is of renovation, of looking to the future, which they achieve successfully through the music and great costume design. Mr. Luhrman nailed it in Romeo + Juliet, just like he nailed it again in this film.Though the music soundtrack includes songs from very current artists - like Jay Z, Fergie, Florence and the Machine, etc- , they did an amazing job including Charleston and Lana del Rey's "Young and beautiful", which after 24 hours of watching the film, is still pretty much stuck in my head.
Except for Will i.am song's, which pretty much made me cringe when it appeared on the movie, the rest is pretty good.

3. That sense of living in the fast lane, and that feeling of decadence.
I don't have the words to describe Luhrman's editing technic, but if you saw Romeo + Juliet, you will understand perfectly what Im talking about. Those fast-paced and visually rich scenes, that transmit that joie de vivre, and that it also gets to communicate a dramatic plot.
In my opinion, this film accomplishes to represent what was going on in the 1920's in EUA, it captures all the excesses,  luxury, glamour and wealth that nosedived with the Great Depression.Scene from The Great Gatsby / Escena de El Gran Gatsby
2.The Visual Feast
I'm not only talking about the costumes here - which are hands down, stunning- I'm also thinking of the decor, the ambiance, even the gardens where delivering a message!, or the cars, from which I don't know that much, but were pretty cool to watch.
Once this movie is out in Blue Ray I will buy it, and watch scene by scene all the details, just like Jay Gatsby's monogram that framed the floor at his mansion and the iron works.
1. Daisy Buchannan and Jordan Baker'scostumes
One of my favorite museums is the ROM (The Royal Ontario Museum) , specially its floor dedicated to the Roaring 20's.I even got the chills while staring to the original dresses, shoes and luggage from that time. Everything a piece of art and history, true examples of talent and dedication.
Also in that floor, you can see some very nice forniture and personal accesories from the time.
While watching The Great Gatsby, I realized that it is that particular yearning of modernity and change that appeal to me so strongly. It's the evolution based on functionality, luxury and elegance.
