¡Highlighters (o iluminadores)! ¿Por qué están tan de moda? ¿Cómo usarlos?

Con las modas de Instagram ha venido el maravilloso mundo de las cejas, del que ya hablamos la semana pasada, y el del highlighter o iluminador. El concepto de contouring ya lo incluía pero más tarde salieron a la luz numerosas técnicas que se basaban exclusivamente en el iluminador para maquillar el rostro ( strobing). Ha habido un crecimiento muy loco de este producto, que hace unos años no era más que un poco de corrector en los sitios concretos. Ahora no solo requiere productos concretos que no pueden usarse para otros propósitos y que son bastante caros, sino que cada día hablamos de puntos más extremos. Está claro que para que se vea en las fotos siempre se necesita mucho más producto que para que se note al natural.

With all the Instagram trends we've had for the last years, including the brow world that we talked about last week, comes the highlighter. The contouring already included it but afterwards many more techniques came out where it was more and more important the use of a highlighter, some even with just that tool (strobing). There has been a crazy growth of this product, that we didn't even know it existed a few years ago, and it was just a bit of concealer in the right places. Now it not only requieres more expensive things but we're talking about more extreme uses everyday, it's clear you need more product for pictures than real life.

A pesar de que parezca el algo que todo el mundo lleva, lo cierto es que a día de hoy no es tan fácil encontrar algo que te haga el mismo efecto que a nuestras queridas representantes, ¿por qué? Porque normalmente no tenemos focos apuntándonos y lo más habitual es que solo te veas el iluminador en tu casa mientras te lo pones. Eso sí, a veces te sorprenderá en alguna foto con flash o alguien que tenga ojo para el tema te echará un piropo.

Even though it seems like everybody has highlighted AF cheeks nowadays, it doesn't seem that easy to find the perfect product our role models use, why? Well, maybe we don't have the lights pointing at us all the time and the more common thing is for you to see it only when you apply it. And of course it will surprise you in every photo with flash and when somebody that has an eye for that tells you it looks awesome.

Opuesto al contouring (aunque al mismo tiempo compatible), el iluminador se echa en la zona alta de los pómulos, el lagrimal, el arco de la ceja, el comienzo de la frente, el puente de la nariz y la barbilla.

Al menos esos son los puntos clave, pero tienes que tener en cuenta que allá donde te lo eches conseguir resaltar el rasgo, por lo que si no quieres "echar luz", casi literalmente, sobre tu nariz -por lo que sea-, lo mejor no es echarlo ahí. Si quieres alargarla, en cambio, el highlighter será tu mejor aliado.

Donde más se lleva es en el pómulo, lagrimal y arco de la ceja, porque son los más naturales y más fáciles de conseguir resultados. En el pómulo ilumina el rostro, en el lagrimal da profundidad al ojo y en el arco de la ceja engrandece la mirada.

Where to apply it?

Opposed to contouring (but compatible at the same time), the highlighter it's supposed to be used in you high cheeks, the inside corner of the eye, the brow arch, the star of the brow (almost in between the brows), the bridge of the nose and the chin.

Of course, it depends on where you want to highlight, literally, according to your features -favorite and not that favorite.

Se ha visto mucho últimamente la purpurina directamente a modo de highlighter y es, sinceramente, genial. No es algo que se pueda llevar en el día a día, ¿pero qué me decís de llevarlo a un festival o a alguna fiesta donde se pueda ir más cantoso?

It's all around now to use glitter as a way to go over the top with the highlighter and, honestly, I say go for it! It's not really something you can wear everyday, but you can definitely rock it in a music festival or a party where you can really be the center of attention.

Como yo aún no he encontrado el highlighter ideal, casi prefiero daros un par de consejos prácticos a la hora de usarlo.

Because I haven't found the one for me (yet) I prefer to give you the practical advice I learnt this last few months.

1. ¿No te dura?

Utilizar dos: uno en base crema y otro en polvos sobre el primero para que ambos se complementen y se fijen.

It never lasts? Use two: one in a creamy base and another one over that in powder so they complete each other and stay fix.

2. ¿Quieres ahorrar capas (y tiempo) de maquillaje?

Si no eres una gran fan del maquillaje o no todos los días te apetece pasarte 10 minutos maquillándote apuesta por los highlighters con color. Uno con tono rosado o melocotón te dará el aire del colorete.

You want to save time and make up layers?

Maybe you are not that fan of make up or maybe you don't have 10 minutes everyday to use it on this so my recommendation is to use colored highlighters. One in a pinky or peachy color can give you the same touch the blush gives you but even better.
