Sigamos con la continuación del ensayo sobre La reina de las nieves, una novela que bien podría representar la apatía general existente en el mundo, a la vez que todos esperan que suceda algo mágico que les diga que tienen un propósito en la vida. En la entrada anterior había dicho que la historia empieza cuando Barrett ve una extraña luz en el cielo y él la interpreta como algún tipo de señal. ¿Pero acaso fue él el único que la vio? Pues nada más lejos de la realidad. Si hay una cosa característica de los personajes de esta novela, es que todos parecen guardar secretos, hasta que llega el momento en el que el alcohol (o las drogas) hacen efecto y más de uno se va de la lengua. O simplemente, la necesidad de confesar que a lo mejor el universo también les está mandando señales a ellos. La pareja formada por Andrew y Liz resulta que también han contemplado una luz misteriosa en algún otro momento de sus vidas, y ambos se preguntan si aquello no querría decir algo más. Pero mientras tanto, lo que hacen es simplemente dejar pasar los días, dejar pasar su vida entre droga y droga. Es más, esta cita referente a la luz es especialmente reveladora: "Un progenitor gigantesco y hasta ahora desconocido ha decidido que ha llegado el momento de que sus hijos sepan que les está observando, que les cuida; que, después de todo, no han estado perdidos en el bosque todo este tiempo".
Creo que no es una coincidencia que todos los personajes que han visto la luz sean precisamente los que más falta de cariño parecen sufrir. Viéndolo así, lo más fácil es que todos ellos entiendan esa aparición como la compensación por su sufrimiento.
¿En qué se basan las religiones, si no en prometer un lugar que compense todos sus sufrimientos?
Pero si hay alguien que realmente está sufriendo es Beth, la mujer de Tyler. Los que hayan leído el libro, verán que casi todos buscan ser el centro de atención, o destacar por algo para sentirse especiales, aunque yo solo haya mencionado a los personajes más relevantes. En otras palabras, todos quieren ser la reina de las nieves, como dice el título; todos, menos Beth. En ella se puede percibir cierto sentimiento de culpabilidad por haber sido precisamente el centro de atención durante tanto tiempo (estaba enferma de cáncer), para luego tratar de llevar una vida normal como si nada hubiera pasado. Ella cree que le debe algo al mundo por eso, y no al revés, lo cual le da a todo un significado mucho más retorcido. Es más, llevando las cosas al extremo, casi se podría decir que el cáncer de Beth es el símbolo metafórico de todo lo que consume lentamente al resto de los personajes, que es vivir sin rumbo fijo en la vida mientras esperan a que algo mágico pase. Hay que recordar además que Tyler parece ver en Beth un medio para alcanzar sus propósitos de ser un músico reconocido, así que de alguna manera, Beth también representa ese hermano fantasma de los hermanos Meek, aquel que se supone que debe mediar entre los dos y completarlos. Al menos para Tyler, la enfermedad de Beth era la excusa para que él sintiera, aunque fuera solo por unos momentos, que era una persona plena.
No quisiera acabar este ensayo sin mencionar la importancia que tiene el contexto histórico en el desarrollo de esta novela. Los eventos de esta historia tienen lugar tras los atentados del 11S, pues en algún momento se hace referencia a la política de Bush y a la inseguridad del país. No se puede comprender la mentalidad de los personajes sin conocer los momentos por los que estaba pasando EEUU en general, y lo que había sucedido con la mentalidad estadounidense es que habían pasado de ser una nación confiada y segura de sí misma, a ser temerosos de todo el mundo. EEUU necesitaba convencerse de que seguía siendo la primera potencia mundial y que era especial, aunque el resto del mundo ya no lo pudiera ver así tras los atentados, al igual que sucede con los personajes. Tienen miedo al futuro. Todos los comentarios son bienvenidos.

Let's continue with the essay about The snow queen, a novel which could represent quite well the general apathy that exists around the world, at the same time that everybody expects that something magic happens to them to indicate that they have a purpose in life. In the last entry I had said that the story begins when Barrett sees a strange light in the sky and he interprets it as a kind of signal. But was he the only one who saw it? Nothing could be further from the truth. If there's a common caractheristic among all the characters of this novel, it's that everybody seems to keep secrets, until the moment in which alcohol (or drugs) is effective enough to make them talk too much. Or maybe it's just the necessity to confess that the universe is sending signals to them too. The couple formed by Andrew and Liz have also seen a mysterious light in some other moment of their lives, and both ask to themselves it that meant something else. In the meantime, what they do is just let the days pass, let their lives pass drug after drug. In addition, this quotation referring to the light is really revealing: "Some gigantic, hitherto unknown parent has decided it's time to let the children know that they're seen, they're accounted for, they haven't, after all, been lost in the forest all this time".
I think it's not a coincidence that all the characters who have seen the light turn out to be the ones who have a big loss of affection. Considering it this way, the easiest thing is that they understand the apparition as a compensation for their suffering.

But if there's someone who is really suffering, that's Beth, Tylor's wife. Those who have read the book will see that almost each person seeks to be the centre of attention, or standing out to feel special, although I just have mentioned the most relevant characters. In other words, all of them want to be the snow queen, as the title says; all of them, but Beth. We can perceive in her some sense of guilt for having being the centre of attention for a long time (she had cancer), to then trying to lead a normal life, as if nothing had happened. She thinks she owes something to the world because of that and not the other way round, which gives a twisted sense to everything. Moreover, taking everything to the extreme, we can even say that Beth's cancer is a metaphorical symbol of what is slowly consuming the characters, and that is living without a direction while they wait for something magical to happen. We also have to remember that Tyler sees in Beth a mean to achieve his purposes of being a popular musician, so in some way, Beth is that Meek's ghost brother, the one who is supposed to arbitrate between them and complete them. At least for Tyler, Beth's illness is the excuse for him to feel, just for a few moments, that he was a whole person.
I don't want to finish this essay without mentioning the importante of the historical context within the development of the novel. The events of the story take place after 9/11 attacks, because in some moments there are references to Bush politics and the unsafety of the country. The mentality of the characters can't be understood without knowing what USA was going through, and what had happened with americans mentality is that they went from being a confident nation to be afraid of everybody. USA needed to convince itself that they were still the first leading power and they were special, although the rest of the world couldn't see it that way after the terrorist attacks, just as happens with the characters. They fear the future. All comments are welcome.
