Ayer se dieron a conocer las candidaturas a los Emmy 2012 ofreciendo uno de esos inusuales equilibrios entre sospresas y predicciones cumplidas. Por el lado de las novedades, el debut que ha arrancado con más fuerza ha sido el de American Horror Story, que a pesar de haber alcanzado el mayor número de nominaciones empatando con Mad Men, 17, no ha logrado optar a Mejor Drama. Homeland (9), Veep (3), Girls (5) y New Girl (5) también han visto recompensadas sus primeras temporadas frente al reconociminto esperado de títulos asentados en la parrilla como Breaking Bad o 30 Rock, con 13 nominaciones cada una, así como Juego de Tronos (9) y Boardwalk Empire (12).
La mayor sorpresa ha venido desde tierras británicas, ya que Sherlock de la BBC se ha convertido en una de las favoritas al optar por sorpresa a 13 premios. Un más que merecido reconocimiento que prosigue en el apartado de mejor miniserie o telefilme en el que lideran el western de Kevin Costner, Hatfields & Mccoys, y Downton Abbey con 16 candidaturas por cabeza.
