Las metamorfosis de Ovidio no es solo un conjunto de poemas sobre la creación del mundo, sino que es una inmersión profunda dentro de la mente humana. Y una de las historias más reveladoras es la del personaje mitológico de Medea, por su trangresión dentro del contexto de la cultura clásica y de cómo se percibían los roles de género. Algunos de los nombres que sirven para definir su personalidad son venganza, determinación, rebelión, y también verdugo. Antes de entrar más en detalle, creo que no vendría mal un resumen rápido para saber exactamente a qué tipo de personaje estoy analizando. Ella era una hechicera que por amor ayudó al hèroe Jasón a conseguir el Vellocino de Oro, pero pasado un tiempo Jasón la abandonó para casarse con Glauce, hija del rey de Corinto; como respuesta ante tal traición después de todo lo que ella había hecho por él (había matado incluso a su padre y a su hermano por Jasón), Medea mata tanto a la nueva mujer como a los hijos que ella misma tuvo con Jasón, para devolverle a su antiguo amor todo el daño que le había hecho. Es más, hay incluso un síndrome que lleva su nombre para denominar a las madres y padres que matan a sus hijos por venganza. Hechas ya las explicaciones, no hay duda de que Medea puede ser considerada casi como un símbolo de la pasión controlando por completo la mente humana; porque la venganza, al fin y al cabo, es una pasión humana. La venganza es el orgullo para superar la humillación, y en el caso de Medea, es la defensa del honor anteponiéndose a los instintos maternales. Esta es la transgresión que encontramos en esta obra de Ovidio, porque este tipo de descripciones no son comunes en las mujeres de la literatura, ya que se supone que todas deben ser pasivas, sumisas, y resignadas a su destino. Todas estas cualidades era lo que le daban la mujer su estatus como ser puro y bondadoso, como la figura en la que el guerrero debía de apoyarse, y defender su dignidad con la vida si era necesario. Las mujeres podían tener a grandes héroes dispuestos a luchar por su amor, es cierto, pero a costa de negarles su identidad como seres humanos. Y el hecho de no reconocer en las mujeres sentimientos de venganza, independencia, heroicidad, o maldad, ayudaba en ese proceso de deshumanización.
Creer en la santidad eterna de las mujeres, es una "costumbre" que sigue perdurando
Aunque siendo justos, Medea no es el único personaje mitológico que rompe las reglas de los roles de género. También tenemos a Procne, cuyo marido había torturado y violado a su propia hermana. En situaciones así, siempre se espera que sea otro familiar varón el que consume la venganza, pero Procne, al igual que Medea, no está dispuesta a ser simplemente la víctima, así que también mata a sus propio hijo y se los da de comer a su marido. Estos hechos no solo son terroríficos por lo que llegan a hacer, puesto que dejan de ser madres para ser guerreras, sino que estas mujeres son vistas como los peores verdugos para el lector. O al menos, no creo que hayáis sentido indiferencia ante lo que hace Procne. Las mujeres nunca se toman la venganza por sí solas, ¿entonces qué pasa cuando los roles son repentinamente cambiados? Que para la sociedad son poco menos que diablos, sin importar todo el mal que les hayan hecho antes. Es más que obvio que un crimen así horripila a cualquiera, pero pensad en algo. Antes he dicho que lo normal en las mujeres era la obediencia, la dulzura, la pasividad; es decir, ellas eran poco más que cachorros indefensos. Las mujeres que no eran así, entonces solo podían ser "Medeas" o "Procnes", mujeres malignas sin ningún destello de bondad. Mientras que los hombres podían ser héroes de gran valentía, u hombres comunes que trabajaban para mantener a su familia sin meterse en muchos líos, o grandes villanos, con las mujeres pasas de un extremo a otro. O santas o brujas, no existía un término medio. Hoy en día aún me preguntó el por qué de esto.

Hay una teoría psicológica bastante interesante, que dice que Blancanieves y la madrastra forman parte de la personalidad de una misma mujer, pero esta mujer debe quedarse con la personalidad de Blancanieves si quiere tener un final feliz y ser aceptada por la sociedad. Está claro que Medea y Procne eligieron a la madrastra. ¿Qué sentido ha tenido negarle a las mujeres este tipo de cualidades? Tenerles aún más miedo. ¿Qué otra cosa se puede esperar de un ser que siempre es obediente y sumiso? Si se sale de ese patrón, es cuando el miedo hace acto de presencia, porque cuando algo se sale de la norma establecida, entonces aparece el terror mezclado con el odio. Terror por lo que antes he comentado, y odio porque te habían dicho que las mujeres no eran humanas. Todos los comentarios son bienvenidos.

Ovid's Metamorphoses is not just a set of poems about the creation of the world, but it's a deep immersion into the human mind. And one of the most revealing stories is the one about the mythological character of Medea, due to its trangression within the classic culture context and how gender roles were perceived. Some of the words which describe her personality are revenge, determination, rebellion, but also tormentor. Before to go deeper into detail, it may be helpful to make a quick summary to know what kind of character I'm analyzing exactly. She was a sorcerer who helped Jason to get the Golden Fleece for love, but after a while he abandons her to marry Glauce, daughter of Corinth's king; in response to this betrayal after everyhting she had done for him (she had even killed her father and brother to help Jason), Medea kills his new wife and the kids she herself had with Jason, to return his old lover all the pain he caused to her. Even more, there is a symdrome called after her to diagnose parents who kill their own kids for revenge. After this explanation, there's no doubt that Medea can be considered as the symbol of passion controlling the human mind; because after all, revenge is a human passion. Revenge is proud to overcome humiliation, and in Medea's case, it's the defense of the honor prior to maternal instincts. This is the trangression we find in Ovid's work, because these qualities are rare to find for women in literature due to the fact that all of them are supposed to be passives, submissives, and resigned to their fate. These qualities give women the status of pure and kind beings, as the figure in which the warrior must find his support and defending her dignity with his life if that was necessary. Women may had great heroes fighting for her love, that's true, but at the expense of denying their identity as human beings. The fact of not recognizing in women feelings of revenge, independence, heroism, or evilness, was a great help in this process of dehumanization.
Believing in the eternal holiness of women is a "custom" which still exists
To be fair, Medea is not the only myhtological character who breaks the rules of gender roles. There is Procne too, whose husband tortured and raped her own sister. In this kind of situations, it's always expected that a male member of the family takes revenge, but Procne, as well as Medea, can't tolerate to be the victim, so she kills her own kid too and feeds her husband with his flesh. These events are not just terrific for what they have done, because they stop to be mothers to be warriors, but because these women are regarded as the worst tormentors for the reader. At least, I don't think you have felt indifferent towards what Procne did. Women never take revenge by themselves, so what happens when the roles are suddenly changed? The result is that they are the devil for society, no matter the evilness they have suffered before. It's obvious that such crimes are terrible, but think about that. I have said previously that women in literature are often obedient, sweet, passive; it means, they are like harmless puppies. Women who are not like that, then they just can be "Medeas" or "Procnes", evil women withouth any kind of goodness. While men can be brave heroes, or regular men who work hard to support their families without getting into trouble, or great villains, women can only go from one end to the oter. Or saints or witches, there were no positions in the middle. I'm still wondering the reason for that nowadays.

There is a vary interesting psychological theory which says that Snow White and her step-mother are part of the same woman's personality, but this woman should keep Snow White's personality in order to have a happy ending and being accepted by society. It's clear that Medea and Procne chose the side of the step-mother. What's the meaning of denying these kind of qualities in women? To fear them even more. What can you expect from a being who is always supposed to be obedient and submissive? If they get out of this pattern, then it's the moment when fear appears, because when something seems to be out of the stablished rule, then terror mixed with hate raises. Terror because of what I commented before, and hate because you were told that women are not human beings. All comments are welcome.
