Por qué darle a tu hijo herramientas y utensilios reales? – Why give your kid real tools and utensils?

Si estáis siguiendo el #retomontessori2015 ya sabréis que el reto de Marzo estaba dedicado a crear el Ambiente Preparado, principalmente a identificar y eliminar los obstáculos con los que se suelen encontrar los niños en su día a día. En Abril continuamos trabajando el Ambiente Preparado pero esta vez vamos a centrarnos en los utensilios y herramientas que ponemos a disposición de nuestros peques.

Es muy habitual que los niños tengan juguetes que imitan utensilios reales (de cocina, de jardinería, de bricolaje, de limpieza…), y esos juguetes pueden tener su función en el juego simbólico (aunque incluso para el juego simbólico conviene optar por materiales de calidad y evitar el plástico en lo posible), pero es importante que los niños también tengan acceso a utensilios y herramientas reales, de calidad y que funcionen correctamente.

La única diferencia entre nuestros utensilios y los de los niños debería ser el tamaño, para que sus pequeñas manos los puedan manejar bien. Si bien con ciertos utensilios como cuchillos, ralladores, herramientas de bricolaje… debemos tener en cuenta la seguridad además de la funcionalidad.

Pero… ¿por qué darle a tu hijo herramientas y utensilios reales?

• Se siente valorado al tener utensilios iguales que los nuestros
• Valora y cuida los utensilios porque se da cuenta de que no son juguetes
• Se implica más en las actividades cotidianas de la casa
• Se siente capaz de realizar dichas actividades al tener utensilios que funcionan correctamente
• Aprende a través de experiencias reales (jugando a las cocinitas se aprenden ciertas cosas, y cocinando de verdad se aprenden otras, no son incompatibles!)

It is very common that children have toys that mimic real utensils (for cooking, gardening, DIY, cleaning…) and these toys may have their role in pretend play (although even for pretend play we should choose quality materials and avoid plastic whenever possible), but it is important that children also have access to real tools and utensils, good quality and functioning properly.

The only difference between our utensils and children’s ones should be the size so that their little hands can handle them well. And with certain utensils like knives, graters, DIY tools… we must consider the safety besides functionality.

But … why give your kid real utensils and tools?

• Feels valued having the same utensils that we have
• Takes care of the utensils because he realizes that they are not toys
• Is more involved in the daily activities of the house
• Feels able to perform such activities by having properly functioning utensils
• Learns through real experiences (by pretend cooking we learn certain things, and by actually cooking we learn other things, they’re not incompatible!)
