Sleep Well Beast fue producido por el miembro Aaron Dessner en co-producción con Bryce Dessner y Matt Berninger. El álbum fue mezclado por Peter Katis y grabado en el estudio de Aaron Dessner, Long Pond en Hudson Valley, New York. Sleep Well Beast está disponible en formatos CD, digital y doble LP.The National estrena el tema The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness, con un video dirigido por Casey Reas. La banda también anunció una gira por el mundo en apoyo al álbum, iniciando en Cork, Irlanda el 16 de septiembre.
