[Why I ♥ Holbox]: La prueba de que los perritos si van al cielo

¡Que dicha que es conocer nuevos lugares! Este año, o este mes, para ser exacta, tuve la alegría de conocer Holbox, el paraíso hecho vacación.Ohhh the joy of travelling and seeing new places! This year's May I had the fortune to see and enjoy Holbox, the paradise made a summer destination. Tal vez algunos de ustedes me podrían argumentar que Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, y hasta Dubai, tienen playas paradisíacas, que al igual que Holbox tienen arena finita y clara, y el mar es tranquilo y con un color espectacular... es cierto, es cierto, pero esas no son las únicas razones por las que esta isla Mexicana me parece tan especial. Some of you might say that Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica or Dubai have breathtaking views, beautiful white sand and perfect beaches with clear and calm waters in an amazing shade just like Holbox right?... and you are absolutely right, but those are not the only reasons why I this Mexican Island is very special for me. 
  El Lugar
Holbox es una isla frente a la Península de Yucatán. El aeropuerto internacional más cercano es el de Cancún, hay que manejar por algunas horas para llegar a Chiquilá, donde se toma un ferry a la Isla. A diferencia de la Riviera Maya y Cancún, y en buena parte gracias a la conciencia de sus habitantes, Holbox se ha salvado de las grandes compañías hoteleras, los mega centros comerciales, y muchas cadenas transnacionales que están presentes en la mayoría de las playas Mexicanas. La ecuación es simple, no hay Cocobongo, entonces no hay "Springbreakers".
No tengo nada en contra de la fiesta, pero piénsenlo así, mientras más somos en un lugar, más gasto de agua y otros recursos, por lo que más cara le sale la factura al medio ambiente.
Si alguien del área me lee, les mando una felicitación, en verdad que la isla está limpia y con un ambiente muuuy agradable. Holboxeños: ¡ Felicidades viven en el paraíso!   The place
Holbox is an island by the Yucatan Peninsula. The closest international airport is the one at Cancun, and from there you still have a couple of hours drive to Chiquilá, a small town where you take a ferry to the island.
Unlike The Mayan Riviera and Cancun, Holbox is not a mayor tourist spot, mainly thanks to its conscious inhabitants, it has actually managed pretty well to remain a low-profile destination. No Walmart, no McDonald's, no Cocobongo club, no hotels with 20 floors and 300 rooms available... and therefore, no "Spring breakers". 
Just to clarify, I have nothing against the party - or party goers - but see it this way, the more of us tourists in a place, the more water and other resources will be needed, and more the damage to the environment. 
Holbox inhabitants if you are reading this.. Congratulations! Your island is very clean, beautiful and has such a peaceful atmosphere. You guys live in Paradise!

  El Hotel
Durante mi visita a la Isla Holbox, me quedé en el hotel boutique "Casa Tortugas"... ¡que hotel tan bello! Les podría decir que es uno de los Hoteles más bonitos en los que me haya hospedado (lo siento Fairmont Chateau Frontenac y Fairmont Chateau Laurier, ustedes tienen muchísimos encantos, pero la "Casa Tortugas" es otro boleto...), también tuve la dicha de hospedarme una noche en la Posada Mawimbi, justo a un lado de Tortugas y con una habitación súper linda y grande.
Algo que noté en mi estancia en este paraíso, que entre las personas que trabajan en los hoteles del lugar (que no son más de 11 en total, y ninguno es un edificio de 20 pisos con 300 habitaciones), o en los pocos restaurantes y bares, hay varios casos del tipo de "me enamoré del lugar y decidí quedarme a vivir aquí"...¡Quién como ellos!
Ya se que gente amable y servicial hay por todos lados, pero me encantó ver como la gente que vive y trabaja en Holbox se ve tan relajada y ¡feliz!
  The hotel 
During my stay at Holbox Island, I stayed at "Casa Tortugas"... what a beautiful place! Seriously, I've been lucky enough to do my share of travelling and this hotel is definitely in my top 5 of most gorgeous hotels. Sorry Fairmont Chateau Frontenac and Chateau Laurier, your hotels have many charms and awesome architecture, but "Casa Tortugas" is a whole different story!
I was also lucky enough to stay one night at Posada Mawimbi -just right next to Casa Tortugas - and the room was beautiful, and very spacious!
Something else I notice during my stay at this Paradise, was that among the people that work in the Hotel - my boyfriend and I counted 11 Hotels in the whole island, and none of them is a 20 floor accomodation with hundreds of rooms - and also in the few bars and restaurants in the island, we heard stories like "I fell in love with this place and decided to stay and make it a living.." Lucky them! :)
You might say that kind and helpful people can be found anywhere, but it was very refreshing to see how the people living and working in Holbox looks so relax and happy! 
Una vez escuche a alguien decir que al morir, las mascotas no van al cielo, lo cual inmediatamente me hizo pensar lo siguiente: "¿Y cómo porqué no? Si los animalitos suelen ser mucho más amables y amorosos que nosotros.. ¿o será te preocupa que el cielo se vaya a llenar muy pronto? jejeje...I once heard someone say that pets don't go to heaven when they die... I immediately thought: "Why not? they are much more nicer than most of us!... are you afraid it would get too crowded over there?"
Compañía perruna garantizada / Friendly company here and there
  Los perritos si van al cielo
Así como en Estambul parece haber varios miles de habitantes felinos, circulando por las calles, algo que me encantó de Holbox es su población perruna. Se los dice alguien que lleva a su (hijo único) un Chihuahua cabeza de venado,  a todos lados posibles, y que lo llevaría aún a más lados si no estuviera "prohibido".
Así como en Europa se ven comúnmente perritos (y perrotes) acompañando a sus dueños en el metro, en el café, en restaurantes y edificios públicos; igual pasa en Holbox.
En más de una ocasión me acompañaron un par de amigos perrunos en mis caminatas por la playa, y también los veía temprano en la mañana que salían en pandilla a correr y a jugar en las suaves olas del mar. ¡Hasta ellos se veían súper contentos! :)
  Dog friendly
Just like Istambul seems to have a feline population of several thousands wandering through their streets, something that caught my attention while at Holbox, is its doggy population. Take this from a person who carries her - only "child" - Chihuahua almost everywhere, and that if possible, I would bring him everywhere with me.
Just like in some places in Europe it is common to see dogs keeping their human friends in good company while on the subway, cafes, restaurants and public buildings, same thing happens in Holbox, sometimes even without a particular human friend. 
More than once, a couple of canine friends kept me company while on a morning walk at the beach, in the mornings I also saw a crew of dogs running around the the beach and playing with the soft waves. They look so happy and peaceful! 
1. Delicioso pan, y mermelada de frutas hechos y servidos en el Mawimbi / Delicious homemade bread and fruits jam at the Mawimbi.
2. Ceviche en/ at Myriam.
3. Cámarones empanizados en Viva Zapata (chequen como los platos están super bien servidos y ¡muy rico!) / Breaded shrimp at Viva Zapata Resturant (look at the huge size of the plates! And it was delicious too!).
4. Postre de leche con extracto de lavanda en La Guaya (Las delicias de Luca) / Milk dessert with lavander extract at La Guaya.
5. Desayuno en Casa tortugas: burritos. / Burritos for breakfast at Casa Tortugas.
6. La ya tradicional pizza de Langosta en la Pizzeria Edelyn / The now traditional Lobster Pizza at Pizzeria Edelyn.
   Así se come en el cielo...
Holbox es un destino vacacional preferido por los europeos, no me sorprende que la mayoría de mis amigos y familiares no hubiera escuchado de esta bellisíma isla antes. Según me platicaron, hay familias de Holboxeños que han vivido allí por generaciones, así como han ido llegando algunos mexicanos de otros estados de la república y europeos, mayoritariamente italianos. Los pescadores locales se encargan de traer sus mercancías frescas diariamente, lo cual aunado a la mezcla cultural tiene como resultado una comida deliciosa y fresca.Sospecho que no hay ni 12 restaurantes en los 55.948 km² de la isla, ¡pero ni falta que hacen más! La comida es riquísima y las grandes cadenas de restaurantes y bares, no son algo que vayas a extrañar en tu visita.En nuestra estancia de 6 días, mon amour y yo comimos el Ceviche más delicioso que haya comido en mi vida, un Cóctel de Camarones súper fresco y riquísimo, así como probamos unas combinaciones de sabor muy originales y ricas en "El Sushi de Holbox", y claro que también probamos la ya tradicional Pizza de Langosta (¡yuuummm!). Por si fuera poco en "Casa Tortugas" y en "Mawimbi" nos consintieron con sus ricos desayunos que incluían pan recién salidito del horno y una mermelada de frutas hecha en casa ¡buenísima! Luca en "La Guaya" cumple lo que promete, con sus delicias, y las margaritas gigantes del (Hotel) Mawimbi también pasaran a la historia.   Paradise's food
Holbox is a destination preferred by European visitors, and it is know that among its inhabitants there are some Europeans - mainly Italians - and  Mexicans from other estates of the Republic. Add that to the fact that fishermen bring in everyday their amazingly fresh goods and the result is an amazing town to eat out.
Though there might not be more than 12 restaurants in this 55.948 km² island, the food is so delicious that you don't even get to miss the world famous brands and restaurants.During my 6 day stay at this Paradise with my BF, I ate the most delicious Ceviche I have ever had in my life, I had an amazing mix of flavors at "El Sushi de Holbox", and tried for the first time the Lobster Pizza. Plus we loved the straight-out-of-the-oven bread and super fruity homemade jam at both  Casa Tortugas and Mawimbi. Luca at "La Guaya" delivers with his delicious food and  the huge and tasty Margaritas at Mawimbi Hotel will definetely make history! 
  Apreciando y respetando
Me dio mucho gusto escuchar que la poblacion de Holbox contribuyo a que se establecieran varias reglas para cuidar el medio ambiente, lo cual explica porque en este lugar no veras enormes albercas en los hoteles, y porque en las playas de la isla aun se encuentra lo que se llama vegetacion pionera, diferentes tipos de dunas, conchitas (¿pueden creerlo? hacía tanto que no veía una playa tan llena de conchitas!), y en algunas temporadas también tortugas y tiburones ballena.Es muy cómodo  ir a una playa y quedarse en un lugar que cuente con todos los servicios y comodidades ¿verdad? Pero también tenemos que recordar el gran impacto que podemos causar al medio ambiente con estos servicios y "necesidades", y nuestra aportación al ambiente empieza en actos sencillos como el conservar limpios nuestros alrededores.Este lugar es una maravilla, pero en verdad depende de nosotros (los turistas, los habitantes, los Mexicanos, los viajeros, los votantes, etc...) que lo siga siendo.     The beauty of respectI was very happy to hear that Holbox population asked for a series of environmental regulations to be established, which is the reason why you won't find huge swimming pools in their hotels, and that is also why at the beaches of this island you can still find the pioneer vegetation, mobile dunes, fixed dunes, shells - jeez! I haven't seen those in years! - and every once in a while turtles and whale sharks that also love to hang out in the area.Of course it is nice to go to a beautiful destination and arrive to a place that can provide all the accommodations, but we also have to remember the huge impact that we may be causing to the environment, and it all starts off with small actions like cleaning after ourselves. This place is beautiful, but it really depends on us - tourists, inhabitants, voters, Mexicans, travelers... - to keep it that way.
