A Guide to Caring for Your New Hair Extensions

Choosing high-quality hair extensions is never a bad idea and there are things that you can do to ensure that they last you as long as possible.

How to care for your new hair extensions Brushing your hair extensions

A loop brush is the only brush that you should be using to brush your hair extensions. Separate the hair into two sections and brush each section from the bottom up. This will stop the extensions from tangling. It's recommended that you brush your hair every morning and night for the best results.

Washing your hair extensions

It's highly recommended that you use a shampoo and conditioner that is designed for hair extensions.

Before you wash your hair, brush it out to remove any tangles. If you will be showering, opt for a medium pressure to avoid damaging the bonds.

To wash, thoroughly wet your hair and work the shampoo in a downward direction. Massage the areas in-between the bonds and then rinse well. You can now apply the conditioner.

Once you've left the conditioner on for around 5 minutes, rinse your hair and dry it with a towel, taking care not to wrap the hair in the towel or dry it too roughly.

Styling your hair extensions

You can use any hair styling tool on your tape in extensions by J'adore by be sure to always use a low heat setting and a heat protection spray.

Before you begin styling your hair, make sure that it's completely dry and that you work in sections, making sure not to pull too hard on the hair. Refrain from using hairspray as it contains too much alcohol, which could damage the hair extensions.

Since you will have far more hair to work with than usual, ensure you work through in sections.

Sleeping with your hair extensions

Firstly, never go to sleep with wet hair. Before you go to sleep, brush your hair and put it in a loose plait. If you don't want your hair to be wavy, place it in a low ponytail using a silk wrap.

Colouring your hair extensions

It's always best to have your hair coloured by a professional to ensure that the correct products are being used and that you achieve an even, natural-looking result. One important rule is to never try and lighten your extensions as this will damage them. Virgin hair is the only exception as it responds quite well to the lightening process but it will still dry it out so be sure to ask your stylist to use a toner afterwards. If possible, rather colour your extensions before you apply them as the dye can sometimes damage the bonds.
