Added to all these is the sense of pride a person has in his cultural tradition, the feeling of identification he has with his background. Plagued with cerebral palsy, Melissa was one of hundreds of adults with special needs who came that night for an evening of food, games, and dancing. I volunteered to accompany one of the guests as her date throughout the night's various activities. The evening culminated in an hour or two on the dance floor, where I rocked and swayed Melissa to the sound of "Tiny Dancer," and helped move her arms to the shouts of "Y-M-C-A!" It was one of the most memorable nights of my life, and I spent more than an hour of it standing in line, desperately trying to find a way out.
To my rather naïve surprise, however, instead of setting the score for Für Elise on the piano stand before me, my piano teacher handed me a set of Beginner's Books. I was to read through the Book of Theory, learn to read the basic notes of the treble and bass clefs, and practice, my palm arched as though an imaginary apple were cupped between my fingers, playing one note at a time. After I had mastered the note of "C," she promised, I could move on to "D."
Rewards and punishments rarely change behavior. Not only do kids "outgrow" the rewards being offered, meaning the rewards must get increasingly bigger to make an impact, but kids don't end up wanting to change they simply end up wanting their rewards. 8775 Redirecting Children's Behavior 8776 author Kathryn Kvols, founder of the International Network for Children and Families, writes: "If the person giving the reward is not around, the child has no motivation to internally behave as you want her to."
This is classic self-esteem-killing stuff, people. Losing oneself in them, visiting different cities, countries, reliving the past, the present and the future, as visualized by the writer, gives a completely different dimension to one 8767 s life. Could it be possible had it not been for the school library?
The rationale for these charts is as obvious as it is understandable: Teachers have one of the hardest jobs on the planet. Put a group of high-maintenance, chronic "misbehavers" in their classrooms, and what the heck are they supposed to do? They have to do something, right? And behavior charts are certainly kinder than the ruler-to-the-hands or dunce-in-the-corner tactics used in our grandparents' and great-grandparents' age.
In other words, as soon as the class gets a substitute teacher who doesn't use the behavior chart, all bets are off. Alfie Kohn, a scholar, educator and author of 8775 Punished by Rewards, 8776 argues parents and teachers need to keep in mind the long-term goal of helping kids grow into responsible and caring people rather than the short-term goal of obedience.
