The construction of the Guemes Gallery was an idea put forward by two men from the Province of Salta (Northern province of Argentina), EmilioSan Miguel and David Ovejero. The name of the gallery was given in honour of one of the most significant historical characters of the Province of Salta, General Martín Miguel de Guemes. The actual construction was charged upon italian architect Francisco Gianotti. Building started in 1913 and it was finally opened to the public on the 15th of December 1915. It still is one of the main Art Noveau buildings still standing in the city of Buenos Aires. The streets Florida and San Martín are connected through a gallery of 116 metres in extension. In its prime, the Gallery was considered to be the tallest skyscrapper in the city, with its 14 stories and its 87 metres in height. It originally had over 250 offices, 70 apartments, two restaurants, an underground ball room, coffe shops, bars and barber shops.
