A new event of the "Buenos Aires Celebra" celebrations took place on the 17th of August, and this time the honours were for the Japanese community. The "Nippon Matsuri" was organized by the government of the city of Buenos Aires, alongside the Argentine Federation of Nikkei Associations (FANA, its acronym in Spanish). The chosen venue was Avenida Santa Fe, between Carlos Pellegrini and the Plaza San Martín.
The traditional Japanese Matsuri was followed by martial arts exhibitions and a number of musical as well as traditional dancing events. Visitors were also able to enjoy a wide array of different dishes of the Japanese cuisine.
The Japanese community in Argentina is the third in size within the South American region, after the communities that live in Brazil and Perú. From both of these countries is that most of the Japanese immigration has come from. It was estimated (back in 2011) that 11.675 Japanese live in Argentina and that there are around 23.000 citizens of Japanese origin.
The first immigrant to have arrived to Argentina from Japan was Kinzo Makino, who worked as a train driver.
