Las nominaciones fueron anunciadas el pasado 14 de julio por Anthony Anderson (black-ish) y Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls, Parenthood), desde el Wolf Theater en Hollywood.
Juego de Tronos encabeza las nominaciones con 23, le sigue muy de cerca la miniserie The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story con 22, Fargo con 18, y la comedia Veep con 17. Cabe decir que HBO es la cadena con más nominaciones, tiene un total de 94, aunque muchas menos que en 2015 cuando obtuvieron 126. Le sigue FX Networks con 56 nominaciones (tuvieron 38 en 2015), y Netflix con 54, 20 nominaciones más que en 2015.
La ceremonia de entrega de la 68ª edición de los Emmy será retransmitida el próximo domingo 18 de septiembre de 2016, y el anfitrión será el popular Jimmy Kimmel, siendo la segunda vez en su carrera.
