The "Pirámide de Mayo", which is not a pyramid at all, but rather an obelisk, is the first national monument which was built in the city of Buenos Aires. It can be found in the middle of the "Plaza de Mayo". It was originally built in 1811 by Francisco Cañete. Its original location was right in front of the Cathedral, but it was moved in 1912, due to the construction of the Subte A line (underground/subway line).
All around the monument there are a series of paintings on the ground. These are in representation of the white handkerchiefs that represent the "Madres de Plaza de Mayo", who every Thursday, for over 30 years now, carry out their famous protest.
