Pre-producción y Producción (Monterrey - Bilbao, Noviembre de 2009 a Mayo de 2010)
Esta etapa se desarrolló a lo largo de un año aproximadamente. Hay que señalar que la complejidad en el desarrollo y preparación de cada shot, llevaba semanas y obligaba a que la pre-producción y la producción se solaparán constantemente. Nuestro planning dependía del material acabado para armar cada set con todo lo necesario para animar. Fue de gran ayuda la creatividad y la experiencia de colaboradores como el escultor Gerardo Azcunaga, que nos aporto gran cantidad de soluciones en las estructuras internas y el articulado de algunos personajes como Bot-bot (El robot que pierde su cabeza) o para Bir (el osito sin peluche), ambos con un esqueleto interior metálico, articulado con rodamientos y que funcionó a la perfección. Otra gran solución; Un mecanismo de poleas y pesos para mantener siempre tensos los hilos que los personajes tenían atados a la cabeza, pies y manos para poder animarlos como marionetas, manejados supuestamente por el personaje del titiritero.
Pre-production and production (Monterrey - Bilbao, from November 2009 to May 2010)
This phase took about a year. We must emphasize that the complexity and preparation of each shot took weeks, and resulted in that both pre and post-production would overlap constantly. Our schedule depended on the finishing of the material needed to build each set for animation. We had great help from collaborators like the sculptor Gerardo Azcúnaga, who gave us great suggestions for the internal structures for some for the characters like Bot-bot - the robot that loses his head - and Bir - the teddy bear that lost its fur -. One suggestion was to add round-pivot articulations to the internal skeletons. Another great solution was to add a system of pulleys and weights to maintain the tension in the strings tied to the head, hands and feet of some of the characters, to be able to animate them like marionettes - the way they were handled by the character of the puppeteer.

¿Por qué en Bilbao? Aquí tenemos un estudio de Animación desde el año 2008 en que se inauguró con el nombre de Taller-estudio articula2. El cortometraje es Mexicano de producción por parte de IMCINE y sobre todo porque Gabriela (gabymonos) es mexicana, que es el 50% de este proyecto, pero la otra parte es Jon Ferlop, nacido en Barakaldo, cercanías de Bilbao. Defectuosos nació como concepto en Barcelona, donde ambos autores coincidimos varios años atrás y por tanto, intelectual, artística y geográficamente, Defectuosos tiene arraigo muy profundo en estas tierras.
Mientras Gabriela continua aún por unos meses en Monterrey con parte de la Pre-producción de personajes, Jon, ya en Bilbao, se pone manos a la obra con el diseño y construcción de sets reales y digitales, props y algunos personajes más, a diferentes escalas, dependiendo de los shots y sus encuadres.
Why Bilbao? We have here an animation studio since 2008, when it was started with the name workshop-studio articula2. The film-short is a Mexican production, partly because it is from IMCINE, but mostly because Gabriela (gabymonos) is Mexican. However, it has a strong Spaniard component since Jon Ferelop, the co-founder of the studio, was born in Barakaldo, close to Bilbao. In addition, the Defective idea was conceived in Barcelona, where both authors lived for a time, and as a result it has deep roots in Spanish soil.
While Gabriela continued with pre-production of the characters in Monterrey, Jon in Bilbao worked on the design and construction of real and digital sets and on some of the characters in different scales and sizes.

Eventually, Gabriela arrived in studio articula2 and we continued with the work for the short. Day to day, main and secondary characters got the finishing touch.
Mitsue Haya and Terry Amaini arrived to the studio in July, with vacation in mind. They are good friends with Gabriela, and they are from Milan, Italy, were they met. Both are animation professionals with great experience in the field. Mitsue's expertise is stop-motion - similar to Gabriela's background - and Terry is a great illustrator with similar passions to Jon's, which include comics and animation. We found great affinity in interests in the personal and professional level. We enjoyed with them two weeks that transformed into work sessions, and in which our collaborators helped us with their great work meet a deadline that seemed impossible just days prior. We would never be able to repay the real value of the work they did for us.
