Anyone who loves Puccini will find this opera by Francesco Cilea, a contemporary and fellow Italian, just as rich, melodious and romantic. Its title role has long been associated with star sopranos, and this production is no exception with Angela Gheorghiu singing opposite Jonas Kaufmann as Maurizio. The story of jealous rivalry in love is set between the two worlds of theatre and the aristocracy with the fictional version of the real and famous actress Adriana Lecouvreur’s life played out to its final and deadly conclusion.

BBFC to be confirmedTosca (Recorded) Available November 2011Powerful music, a gripping story and a tragic end: Puccini’s ever-popular Tosca was performed at the Royal Opera House in 2011 with a fabulous cast including Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel. Set in the Rome of 1800, a political world of control and suspicion, Tosca is a beautiful diva in love with idealistic painter, Cavaradossi, whose beliefs and loyalties bring him into conflict with the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia. Conducted by Antonio Pappano, the score includes great set pieces such as ‘Te Deum’ and the arias ‘Vissi d’arte’ and ‘E lucevan le stelle’. Drama, passion and fabulous music – Tosca is one of opera’s brilliant nights out.

This is the pinnacle of classical ballet: a perfect marriage of Petipa’s choreography and Tchaikovsky’s music, as well as a glorious challenge for every dancer on stage. The royal court, the panoramic journey of the Prince to the overgrown castle and the great celebratory dances of the happy ending (in which other famous fairytale figures appear) are all brought to life by the luscious designs of this celebrated production, recreated in 2006 to mark the 75th anniversary of the The Royal Ballet.

BBFC to be confirmedCendrillon (Recorded) Available January 2012For the first time ever, The Royal Opera presents the story of Cinderella as told in Massenet’s opera Cendrillon. ThIs new Royal Opera production is by Laurent Pelly, whose previous work here has included the spectacularly successful La Fille du régiment, a heart-warming L’elisir d’amore and last Season’s stylish new Manon. Pelly brings his characteristic lightness of touch, wit and elegance to Massenet’s delightfully tuneful score against sets and costumes of fairytale charm. Joyce DiDonato takes the title role, with Alice Coote – just like the Principal Boy familiar from British pantomime – as her Prince Charming. Musical highlights include the fairy godmother’s airy coloratura, the orchestral dances of the ball, the March of the Princesses, and of course rapturous duets between the Prince and Cendrillon. French music specialist Bertrand de Billy is the conductor for an opera of radiance and charm.
Starring Joyce DiDonato and Alice Coote.

BBFC to be confirmedIl trittico (Recorded) Available February 2012This is The Royal Opera’s first complete presentation of Puccini’s Il trittico since 1965. Leading director Richard Jones staged his witty, darkly comic realisation of Gianni Schicchi for The Royal Opera in 2007, and here he completes the trio. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano will conduct. Il trittico (‘the triptych’), first unveiled in 1918, represented an operatic departure where Puccini offered three contrasting one-act works instead of a single evening-length narrative.
Il Tabbaro starring Lucio Gallo and Eva-Maria Westbroek
Suor Angelica starring Anja Harteros and Anna Larsson
Gianni Schicchi starring Eleana Zillo and Francesco Demuro

Romeo and Juliet was Kenneth MacMillan’s first full-evening ballet and from its premiere in 1965 has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works, popular all over the world. At the beginning of the ballet MacMillan’s crowd scenes teem with life and colour. However, once Romeo and Juliet meet, everything else on stage can only be scenery for their story. Three great pas de deux: the meeting in the ballroom, the balcony scene and the morning after the wedding eloquently convey the narrative: adolescent shyness and fascination; the headlong rush of love declared, and the grief of parting. The final scene in the tomb, a pas de deux with a lifeless partner, is devastating. Nicholas Georgiadis’s earthy Renaissance designs, with some of the original details recently restored, are the perfect backdrop to this tragic tale of ill-starred lovers.

In Rigoletto, Verdi charts the fate of his larger-than-life characters – the tormented jester trying to avenge himself on his heartless playboy employer the Duke of Mantua, who has carelessly seduced Rigoletto’s innocent daughter Gilda – in music of immense theatrical punch and instant memorability. The score’s most celebrated highlights – the Duke’s ‘Questa o quella’ and ‘La donna e mobile’, Gilda’s ‘Caro nome’, and the famous quartet – are among the best known set- pieces in all opera. First seen in 2001, David McVicar’s production teems with life and colour and, with Tanya McCallin’s period costumes and Michael Vale’s starkly effective sets, it provides an ideal frame for Verdi’s exploration of love, emotional betrayal and the darkest revenge.
Starring Dimitri Platanias, Ekaterina Siurina and Vittorio Grigolo.

La Fille mal gardée LIVE Wednesday 16 May 2012 7.30pm BST
La Fille mal gardée was choreographed by Frederick Ashton from the 19th century original and became an instant hit for The Royal Ballet. The simple story of Lise, her suitor Colas and Lise’s larger-than-life mother, the Widow Simone, who tries to marry her off to the simpleton son of a rich neighbour, is full of delicious comedy, but also wonderful, characterful choreography. One of the greatest pleasures of Fille is the way in which the steps, though at times devilishly difficult, never get in the way of the natural, easy storytelling. It is the perfect ballet for first-timers of all ages, but also one to which ballet-lovers will return again and again with renewed pleasure at every performance.
