El dirndl, es  el vestido tradicional de las mujeres de la zona Austro-Bávara.
The dirndl is the traditional dress of women in the Austro-Bavarian region.

   Al hablar de tradiciones, si pensamos en Alemania las primeras cosas que vienen a la mente son cervezas, hombres con sus shorts de piel, tirantes, pechera, y sombrerito con plumas, y las mujeres con su dirndl ¿o no?
When talking about traditions, if we think of Germany, what comes to mind? Most likely beer, men wearing leather shorts with suspenders, a hat with feathers and of course women wearing..dirndls! Right?                                                                  Los dirndl tradicionales suelen ser más modestos (por debajo de la rodilla) y sencillos. En la actualidad puedes visitar tiendas especializadas (Trachten) y encontrar una gran variedad de ellos, para distintas ocasiones desde ir al Biergarten, algún festival local o el mismísimo Oktoberfest, o para bodas y eventos especiales. Traditional dirndls are more modest, with a skirt that lays below the knees, and also more simple. Nowadays you can visit Trachten stores and find a huge variety of them, for a whole lot of different occasions, from having a drink at the Biergarten, a stroll at a local "volkfest" (folk fest) or the world-famous Oktoberfest, attending weddings and other special events.
Desde la primera vez que los ví en vivo, me encantaron. Muy femeninos y atemporales, y con una gran variedad de cortes, largos, estampados y blusas intercambiables, los dirndl son una prenda sumamente versatil. Since the first time I saw them "live" I loved them. Very feminine, timeless, and available in a great variety of styles, lengths, prints, and with the exchangeable blouses, the dirndls are a very versatile garment.

Facts about dirndls

1.  Datan del siglo XVIII, originalmente eran utilizados por las mujeres del campo. 
   They were first worn in the eighteen century by farmers.
2.  Originalmente la blusa se utilizaba como una forma de proteger la parte interna del vestido de el desgaste, y posiblemente de los olores corporales, pero ahora solo cumplen una función decorativa. 
   Originally the blouse was worn to protect the inside of the dress from wear and tear and possibly from odor. 
3.  La blusa del dirndl es considerada no solo un complemento, sino una forma de asentuarlo.
   The dirndl blouse is considered not only an accessory, but it can also highlight its features.  
4. Sobre el dirndl se lleva un mandil decorativo que va atado con un moño. El moño se lleva del lado izquierdo cuando la mujer es soltera, y del lado derecho cuando es casada.
   On top of the dirndl skirt, an apron is worn and tied by the waist with a bow. When the bow is worn to the left side it means that the lady is single, and to the right, it means that you are married.
5. Gracias al corset incorporado al dirndl, se marca la cintura de quién lo lleva, al mismo tiempo que da un casi inevitable efecto "push up" al escote.
   Thanks to the built-in corset, the dirdnl highlights the waist of those who wear at, and inevitably provides a push up effect to the decoleté.

Una de las grandes ventajas de de llevar un dirndl como vestido de novia, es el que con solo cambiar el mandil, o la blusa con que se combina, se puede volver a utilizar en otra ocasión formal o semi-formal. ¡Punto para las alemanas!

Como extranjera no acostumbrada a los dirndls puedo decir que, como con cualquier otro vestido, lo importante es encontrar la talla adecuada y el estilo propio.As  a foreing woman not used to dirndls, I can say that just as it happens with any other dress, it is important to find the proper size and staying true to your own style.
