Rem Koolhaas se instaló inicialmente en Nueva York en 1972, y allí se incorporó al Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS) de Manhattan. Fundó la Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) y prosiguió su actividad como arquitecto desde Rotterdam a partir de 1978. En 2000 fue galardonado con el célebre premio Pritzker por el conjunto de su obra arquitectónica. Recientemente ha fundado AMO, la vertiente teórica y más propagandista de OMA.
