Patentes, un sistema muy caro e improductivo

Breve debate publicado en PlosMedicine acerca del sistema de patentes que se aplica a la innovación biomédica. Es posible que, como dice en algún momento el artículo, no sepamos en qué medida el sistema actual de patentes promueve o dificulta la innovación en comparación con otros sistemas posibles, pero parece claro que:

The patent system —not just patent rights but how they are obtained and used —has resulted in an innovation system characterized by a dramatic increase in health care costs and decreasing (quantitatively and qualitatively) levels of innovation, especially by dollar spent. While one cannot say that these problems are inherent in patent law they are,nevertheless, an outcome of the manner in which actors deploy patent rights.

We do know that our biomedical innovation system is too expensive and too unproductive and that patents play an important role within that system.

Vamos, que el sistema no funciona. O mejor dicho: funciona demasiado bien para unos cuantos.
