1st Biennial on Public Space. Italia. The Lazio branch of the Italian National Planning Institute (INU-Lazio), in collaboration with the INU branches of Veneto, Piedmont, Liguria, Emilia Romagna and Puglie, is organizing the first Biennial on Public Space, which will culminate in a final meeting organized in Rome during May 2011.

This initiative aims to establish a recurring encounter where ideas can be exchanged, transformations monitored, and scholarly research, and news on other territorial initiatives, can be publicly aired. Public space is a topic of pressing contemporary relevance, considering contemporary changes in the global economy, migration trends, advances in information technology, and transformations in contemporary patterns of urban growth.

We witness ever more frequently episodes challenging the very possibility of governing transformations of public space induced by new social and economic forces. Cities as we have known them over the course of history seem to be in the throes of death.
