The newly-released Federal Prison Handbook compiles information to not only help prisoners and their loved ones protect themselves and their rights, but to help keep prisoners safe by explaining how to avoid the near-constant conflicts found inside prisons.

Increasing numbers of circuit judges are writing dissents from, and concurrences in, orders denying rehearing en banc - colloquially known as dissentals and concurrals. Not everyone is happy about this practice, and some judges have lamented their proliferation. The authors here argue that this has become an entrenched feature of the federal appellate process, and it's a good thing too.

Slavery and Prison - Understanding the Connections

worked there for 5 or 6 years 88-88 as a medic. Saw a lot of fear and violence and answered more than my share of alarms. Cut more than my share of failed suicide gestures down, helped a few cheat death. I saw decent men there and men I would have gladly dispatched to hell. Got very used to the adrenalin rush after a while. Not as crazy as in the 75 8797 s, but still a brutal and fearful place. Sort of miss it.

The newly-released Federal Prison Handbook compiles resources and information to help prisoners and their loved ones understand how the federal prison system works, as well as help keep prisoners safe by explaining how to avoid the near-constant conflicts found inside prisons.

Kinzel is a perfect example of why prison reform is needed. Even while working to obtain his three university degrees, it took him more than six years to find a job after leaving prison - because of the box he had to check on job applications. Now many states have "banned the box" in an attempt to level the playing field for ex-offenders who are re-entering society and want to become productive members of their communities. It wasn't until Kinzel was working on his . that someone gave him a chance at employment, and he was hired to teach criminal justice courses.

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). In the words of President Obama, this law, "which encourages accountability through transparency, is the most prominent expression of a profound national commitment to ensuring an open government." Since its enactment, the FOIA has become an indispensable mechanism for facilitating the public's understanding of the operations and activities of the federal government. The statute applies to all federal agencies and functions in a straightforward way: virtually anyone, for any reason, can request access to agency records, and agencies, in turn, are required to provide those records unless they are protected from disclosure by nine, carefully crafted exemptions.

Nicholas Higgins, director of outreach services at the Brooklyn Public Library, said answering prisoners' letters also provides a "human connection" between the prisoners and those willing to listen and respond. Our criminal justice system is one "that resists that sort of access to information," he added. Pratt Institute associate professor Deborah Rabina agreed, stating, "If you want people to successfully reintegrate into society upon their release, being able to have access to [the Internet] is essential."

There are a couple books that I have recently read that I really enjoyed and were really quick reads. I would like to offer a shout out for them here as well.
