¿Alguna vez te has planteado empezar a cultivar un huerto urbano con los peques en vuestra terraza o balcón pero no sabíais qué plantas escoger?
Hoy te voy a echar un cable con 9 de las plantas que nosotros hemos cultivado y que son ideales para empezar un huerto urbano con niños.
En este post te conté cómo montar un huerto urbano con niños desde cero, por si quieres echarle un vistazo.
La primavera está a la vuelta de la esquina aquí en el Hemisferio Norte y es un gran momento para empezar a cultivar un huerto urbano, pero casi todas las plantas de las que voy a hablar se pueden cultivar prácticamente durante todo el año, así que si estás en el Hemisferio Sur a punto de recibir al otoño este post te interesa igualmente 😉
Acelgas
La acelga es una hortaliza que podemos cultivar todo el año, excepto en inviernos con heladas fuertes. Es muy fácil de cultivar ya que es bastante resistente a plagas y enfermedades y poco exigente en cuanto a luz (le gusta el sol pero tolera bien la sombra) y cuidados. Eso sí, necesita un recipiente grande, de unos 30 o 40 litros de volumen.
Espinacas
Las espinacas también podemos cultivarlas todo el año, a mí me encanta poder coger unas hojas tiernas para la ensalada en cualquier momento, mmmm!
La espinaca es una hortaliza muy fácil de cultivar; se desarrolla fácilmente, no requiere mucho espacio, resiste bien el frío y puede crecer a la sombra, sin luz directa, así que es un cultivo ideal para balcones sombríos. Tampoco es muy exigente en cuanto al riego, únicamente conviene evitar que el sustrato se seque.
En la foto podéis ver cómo la espinaca de la izquierda está espigada, la dejamos subir para recolectar semillas 🙂
Fresas
¿A qué niño no le gustan las fresas? Cultivar fresas es fácil si compras el plantel, ya que germinar las semillas es complicado. Se adaptan muy bien al cultivo en recipientes y no necesitan mucho espacio. Tampoco necesitan luz directa del sol, se adaptan bien al calor del verano y al frío del invierno, incluso resistiendo heladas. La clave es mantener el sustrato húmedo pero suelto, sin encharcar.
Guisantes
Los guisantes se pueden cultivar casi todo el año, a excepción del verano y de inviernos muy duros. Es una hortaliza fácil de cultivar y no requiere mucho espacio, aunque necesitan tutores para agarrarse y trepar. Únicamente hay que tener en cuenta que nunca le falte agua. No es un cultivo muy productivo, es difícil sacar una gran cantidad, pero unos guisantes tiernos recién cogidos están tan ricos que merece la pena cultivarlos aunque la cosecha sea pequeña.
Lechuga
La lechuga puede estar todo el año en nuestro huerto si la protegemos de las heladas en inviernos duros y elegimos variedades adaptadas al calor en veranos calurosos.
Se adapta muy bien al cultivo en recipientes y no requiere mucha luz, se puede cultivar incluso en la cocina. Al ser un cultivo de ciclo corto apenas da tiempo a que le ataquen plagas o enfermedades. Únicamente hay que tener en cuenta que el sustrato sea rico y que esté siempre húmedo pero no encharcado.
Menta
La menta es una hierba aromática con un delicioso aroma y sabor que al ser una planta perenne nos acompañará durante todo el año.
Además de servirnos como aderezo en la cocina y para hacer infusiones nos va a ayudar a repeler a ciertos insectos. Es muy fácil de cultivar; se adapta tanto al sol como a la sombra, resiste temperaturas bajas en invierno, se adapta a cualquier tipo de sustrato y no requiere mucho espacio ni demasiados cuidados, únicamente tener en cuenta el riego para que el sustrato no se seque.
En la foto la menta es la planta que ves más abajo.
Rábanos
Los rábanos son uno de los cultivos más fáciles y rápidos, algunas variedades se pueden cosechar ¡tan solo un mes después de sembrar! Además se pueden cultivar durante todo el año.
Son ideales para cultivar en recipientes porque no requieren mucho espacio. Tampoco son exigentes en cuanto a luz solar ni necesitan muchos cuidados aparte de mantener el sustrato siempre húmedo.
En la foto anterior puedes ver los rábanos empezando a crecer en la maceta de más arriba.
Rúcula
Otro cultivo facilísimo, la rúcula es una planta muy rústica, así que se adapta a todo, yo he llegado a tener rúcula creciendo en una maceta que tenía en barbecho, ¡sin regarla ni hacerle ningún caso!
Se puede cultivar todo el año aunque con el calor del verano su sabor puede volverse más amargo.
Zanahorias
Las zanahorias se pueden cultivar todo el año, resisten incluso heladas si no son muy intensas.
La principal dificultad de este cultivo conseguir que las semillas germinen, por lo demás no es muy exigente en cuanto a espacio, temperaturas ni horas de sol, y en el huerto urbano no suele ser propensa a enfermedades o plagas.

Chard
The chard is a vegetable that we can grow all year, except in winters with heavy frost. It is very easy to grow because it is quite resistant to pests and diseases and not very demanding in terms of light (likes the sun but tolerates the shade) and cares. Of course, you will need a large container, about 30 or 40 liters in volume.
Spinach
Spinach can also grow all year round, I love to pick some tender leaves for the salad at any time, mmmm!
Spinach is a very easy to cultivate vegetable; it develops easily, does not require much space, resists the cold well and can grow in the shade, without direct light, so it is an ideal crop for shady balconies. Nor is it very demanding in terms of irrigation, it is only necessary to prevent the substrate from drying out.
In the photo you can see how the spinach on the left is spiky, we let it rise to collect seeds 🙂
Strawberries
Who does not like strawberries? Growing strawberries is easy if you buy the plant, since germinating the seeds is complicated. They adapt very well to containers and do not need much space. Neither do they need direct sunlight, they adapt well to the heat of summer and the cold of winter, even resisting frost. The key is to keep the substrate moist but loose, without soaking it.
Green peas
Peas can be grown almost all year round, except for the summer and very hard winters. It is easy to grow and does not require much space, although they need tutors to climb. Just keep in mind that they never run out of water. It is not a very productive crop, it is difficult to get a large amount, but some newly picked sweet peas are so yummy that it is worth growing them even if the crop is small.
Lettuce
Lettuce can be year-round in our garden if we protect it from frost in hard winters and choose varieties adapted to the heat in hot summers.
It adapts very well to containers and does not require much light, you can even grow it in your kitchen. Being a crop of short cycle pests or diseases don't have enough time to attack it. Only take into account that the substrate must be rich and always wet but not soaked.
Mint
Mint is an aromatic herb with a delicious aroma and flavor that being a perennial plant will accompany us throughout the year.
Besides serving as a dressing and for teas in the kitchen, it will also help repel certain insects. It is very easy to grow; it dapts to both sun and shade, withstands low temperatures in winter, adapts to any type of substrate and does not require much space or too much care, only take into account the watering so that the substrate does not dry.

Radishes
Radishes are one of the easiest and quickest vegetables, some varieties can be harvested just one month after planting! They can also be grown throughout the year.
They are great for growing in containers because they do not require much space. Neither are they demanding in sunlight or need much care other than keeping the substrate always moist.
In the photo above you can see the radishes starting to grow in the pot at the top.
Arugula or rocket
Another very easy vegetable, the arugula is a very rustic plant, so it adapts to everything, I have found arugula growing in a pot that I had fallow, without watering or taking any care!
It can be grown all year round but with the summer heat its taste can become more bitter.
Carrots
Carrots can be grown all year round, they resist even frost if it's not very intense.
The main difficulty growing carrots is getting the seeds to germinate, otherwise it is not very demanding in terms of space, temperatures or hours of sun, and in the urban garden is not usually prone to diseases or pests.
