Es imposible comunicar con palabras el sobrecogedor mensaje que exhibe Jimmy Nelson en sus imágenes. El fotógrafo británico capta la vida y las tradiciones del hombre en estado puro. Retratos poéticos del drama de la extinción de las tribus más transparentes y libres de hipocresía que habitan por toda la faz de la Tierra.
La tradición tribal del planeta es tan gloriosa como orgullosos son sus guardianes. Nelson ha plasmado esa infinita variedad de expresiones culturales en las 402 fotografías que atesora la obra “Before They Pass Away” (TeNeues). Víctimas de la globalización, aunque ajenos a sus vicios y patrones de consumo y crecimiento económico, ninguno de estos clanes indígenas ha cortado el cordón umbilical con la madre naturaleza.
En cada retrato, Nelson capta las emociones, la espiritualidad y la fisionomía de toda una tribu. Cada matiz, cada detalle, impresos y enmarcados en los contextos más prístinos del globo, sobrevivirán al último aborigen. Jimmy Nelson nos obliga a mirar antes de que desaparezcan.
“La lección más importante que he aprendido ha sido que la clave para conectar profundamente con cualquier tipo de persona y en cualquier situación es dejar de lado toda tu arrogancia. Mostrarnos como ellos, humanos y vulnerables, es un requisito previo para generar confianza y para que pueda fluir un proyecto como este”
La idea cobró forma en 2009, Nelson, infatigable viajero, se propuso ganarse la hospitalidad y la confianza de 35 de las tribus más aisladas.
“Quería ser testigo de sus tradiciones consagradas por el tiempo, participar en sus ritos y descubrir cómo el resto del mundo amenaza con cambiar su forma de vida para siempre. Quería crear un ambicioso documento fotográfico con una estética que resistiera la prueba del tiempo y cuyo resultado fuera un registro etnográfico insustituible de un mundo que desaparece rápidamente”
