Chet Baker – Peace (1982)

“Peace” is by far the most intriguing recording of Chet Baker’s later studio sessions. The album consists mainly of David Friedman compositions with additions of the standard “The Song Is You” and Horace Silver’s title-piece. Baker is supported by a great lineup: David Friedman on vibraohone and marimba, Buster Williams on bass and Joe Chambers on drums. The opening 3+1=5, a confident post-bop structure that deserves to be covered more frequently. The gorgeous “Lament For Thelonious” has an elaborate-sounding melody, built up out of very simple elements. On the title-track “Peace”, it’s Buster Williams rather than David Friedman who takes responsibility for sustaining the chord progression, leaving the vibraharpist to elaborate the theme.

Chet’s playing is splendid throughout.

A marvellous album!
