[Costa Maya] Mahahual

El año pasado, el galán y yo tuvimos la suerte de ir a Holbox (*coff coff * ¡dos veces!) éste año conocimos  Mahahual, y aquí les platico al respecto...Last year my baby and I were lucky enough to go to Holbox - ejem..twice!
And this year we found out about Mahahual and spend our Honeymoon  over there,
here I'll tell you more about it...

¿Dónde? / Where?
Mahahual es un poblado ubicado en la Costa Maya en el estado de Quintana Roo, México. Según nos platicaban los locales, no hace mucho tiempo que Mahahual era un pueblo pesquero, y que poco a poco fue convirtiéndose en un destino turístico. Mahahual is a seaside town located in Costa Maya, at the beautiful state of Quintana Roo in Mexico.
As the locals explained to us, not too long ago Mahahual was just a fishing town, and it was in recent times when it began to develop as a touristic spot.

Para llegar, nosotros tomamos la vía de Chetumal. Volamos de la ciudad de México a Chetumal, y de Chetumal a Mahahual tomamos una de las camionetas que salen de la central casi cada hora, pagando una módica cantidad de $85 pesos. También hay 2 salidas diarias en camiones CARIBE ($70 - $80), o si reservas con anticipación también podrías manejar un vehículo de renta, que puede resultar más cómodo y un poco más rápido.
To arrive, we flew from Mexico City to Chetumal, and from Chetumal we travelled by public transportation. You can either get there by taking one of the CARIBE buses available only in two schedules throughout the day ($4 USD ), there are also vans available for a very low price ($85) that will drive you to Mahahual and leave you right at the door of your Hotel/ Hostel,  or you can get there quicker and more comfortably driving a rental car. 

¿Qué hay por allá? / What can I find over there?
Aproximadamente a trece kilómetros de Mahahual, viajando en embarcación, se encuentra el Banco Chinchorro, que es parte de la reserva de arrecifes de méxico, y es la segunda cadena de arrecifes más grande del mundo, así mismo es el atolón o sila coalina oceánica, más grande de méxico y el segundo en tamaño en el mundo. En Mahahual, puedes contratar un tour de snorkel o de buceo si tienes licencia, a Banco Chinchorro (por $1,600 aproximadamente), y la verdad es que vale muchísimo la pena, ya que además de los arrecifes puedes ver caracol rosado (que nos explicaron que esta en veda por el momento), una gran variedad de peces y ¡hasta el tiburón gata! que vaya que intimida.En el mismo tour los llevan a la Isla del Banco Chinchorro donde tienen su base los biólogos marinos, y algunos pescadores; fuera de eso solo hay manglar padrísimo, iguanas poco amistosas y muy hambrientas (creanme me persiguieron para quitarme el rico sandwich que comía), y unos cocodrilos igual de hambrientos.About 8 miles from Mahahual, by sea, you can reach Banco Chinchorro, an atoll reef , the largest one in Mexico and the second in size in the world. You can take a tour to this beautiful site from Mahahual (which costs about $97USD), and honestly is really really worth it! You can see the reef, plus a great variety of fish, corals and the beautiful nurse shark, which I must say it was very impressive.That same tour takes you to the Banco Chinchorro island, where marine biologists and fishermen reside, in the middle of the breathtaking swamp, with unfriendly iguanas that are hungry enough to try and take food from your hand or bite you!Yup some of them were going around me trying to take my sandwich! You can also see crocodiles that seemed to be just as hungry as the iguanas.A 42 kilometros de Chetumal, se encuentra la Laguna de Bacalar, que lamentablemente no tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar, pero que es un destino súper recomedable.  También es conocida como la alguna de los Siete Colores, y se distigue por la claridad de su agua, que se explica por su origen a partir de varios cenotes que se desbordaron  y la piedra caliza de su base.Lake Bacalar (Laguna Bacalar) is located 42 milometers North from Chetumal, we were unable to make it there this time, but it seems to be one of the highlights of the area. It is also know as the Lake of the 7 colors, know for it´s clarity due to the limestone bottom and "cenotes".
Hospedaje / Lodging
Mi ahora esposo (¡uuuyss!) y yo llegamos al hotel Ko'ox Quinto Sole, y la verdad es que nos gusto mucho. Si buscan un hotel simpático y para relajarse  (4 estrellas), creo que éste es su mejor opción, nos dimos una vuelta por el hotel 40 Cañones y también se ve muy lindo y cómodo.My husband and I - uff! I smile when I say it -  stayed at hotel Ko'ox Quinto Sole, and we liked it much. If you are looking for a four star nice and comfy, this hotel is a great choice. We also had a peek at the hotel 40 Cañones, which is very good looking and comfortable.

Beach Clubs
En Mahahual pueden encontrar hoteles y cabañas frente al mar (solo hay que atravesar un pequeño malecón que no les tomará más de 2 minutos cruzar), también otros hoteles y hostales en la calle paralela al malecón, que no tienen acceso a la playa, lo cual en verdad no es problema ya que muchos clubs de playa donde asolearse, usar kayak, snorkelear, incluso tomar clases de buceo, o simple y sencillamente echarse una copita o una cheve bien fría, y donde comer muy rico y a precios no muy elevados.
In Mahahual you can find seaside hotels and cabins, and on the back street from the boardwalk you can find more hotels and hostels. But still the gorgeous beach is available to everyone through the beach clubs, where to sunbathe, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving classes, or just sit down and sip down a cocktail or a cold beer and delicious food for a good price.
Con ésta cuestión del sargazo que prácticamente invadió la Costa Maya este año, nosotros pasámos unos días en la playa del hotel y otros en los clubs de playa dependiendo de dónde estuviera más despejado el sargazo, que de verdad los trabajadores no se daban a basto quitándolo. El club de playa Yaya Beach nos gustó mucho, super agusto, la playa muy limpia, buen servicio, riquisima la comida y precios razonables hasta en la langosta.  Otro club de playa que nos gustó y que además de todos los servicios tiene renta de bicis disponible es Blue Kay (también tienen cabañas para renta). Un día incluso nos fuimos en bici hasta el Hotel Alma Plena que está a 13 kilometros  del pueblo de Mahahual. El hotel está lindísimo por cierto, si quieren algo aún más tranquilo vayan allá, que en verdad su playa está desierta, con una vista padrísima, y gracias a que sus dueños son Italianos ¡la comida allí es deliciosa!
This year the seaweed seemed to be out of control all over the Costa Maya, we noticed how every single day of our stay, hard working laborers would be shoveling the seaweed out of the sand constantly, and still they couldn´t get to clear it all. We decided to spend a couple of days at the Ko'ox Beach, and some other days we would spend some time at the beach clubs especially the ones that managed to clear their beach the most.  
We really like the Yaya Beach club, the beach was very clean, plus they have a nice setting, great service and delicious food at a reasonable price,  even the lobster was a good price.
Blue Kay beach club was also pretty good, with lots of services including bike rentals and cabins for rent. So one day we took our rental bike for a spin to the Alma Plena EcoResort 13 kilometers from Mahahual town.  The hotel is beautiful by the way, it is owned by Italians which explains why and their food is great.
¿Voy o no voy? / Should I stay or should I go?
Si no eres fan de las multitudes, si tienes ganas de estar en la playa todo el día sin tener que levantarte a las 7am para encontrar un camastro libre, o si tienes ganas de andar en bici, salir a caminar o te gustaría aventurarte a lugares turísticos cercanos, si tienes un plan más relax y quieres desconectarte del mundo, o si te gusta snorkelear, bucear (o incluso si quieres aprender a bucear)... ¡hazte un favor y ve en tus próximas vacaciones a Mahahual!  If you are not a huge fan of crowds, if you feel like laying down on the beach only worrying about your tan instead of rushing in every time to get , or if you feel like taking relaxing bike rides, going for walks or driving to closeby sightseeing spots, if you like snorkeling or scuba diving - you could even learn to do so-, and if overall your plan is unwind, and simply to have some time out from the world... make yourself a favor and book already your next vacations to Mahahual!
Si tienes ganas de ir durante el día al playa y en la noche al antro, si te gustan las multitudes, si tu idea de vacaciones en la playa es visitar un bar diferente cada noche o de plano traes la fiesta a todo lo que da... Mejor busca hotel en Cancún...If you feel like spending your days laying on the beach and  the nights at a fancy club, if you don´t mind -or actually enjoy- crowds, if your ideal would be to visit a different bar every night, or if you just have the party within you.... it´s best for you to go to Cancun.
