Un monasterio en las montañas del Magreb en los años noventa. Ocho monjes cistercienses viven en perfecta armonía con la población musulmana, trabajando con ellos y participando en sus celebraciones. Inesperadamente, asesinan a un grupo de trabajadores extranjeros. El ejército ofrece protección a los monjes, pero estos la rechazan. Al poco tiempo, les visita el grupo armado que dice haber perpetrado la matanza. El prior se mantiene firme y les convence para que se vayan, pero algunos monjes quieren abandonar el monasterio. El prior les pide que reflexionen y que la decisión sea colectiva. Los monjes curan a varios terroristas heridos y el ejército se enfurece.
