Delirium - Primer Diálogo (1985)

Un disco que vale la pena con creces (a pesar de no contar con una excelente calidad en el audio), algo más del mejor progresivo mexicano en una banda angular (aunque no demasiado conocida) en el movimiento del progresivo en latinoamérica, aunque sea reconocida por melómanos de todo el mundo. Un álbum totalmente instrumental de rock progresivo con influencias rock progresivo italiano y francés, en particular PFM, influencia citada solo con el fin de orientar sobre sus influencias. El sonido del CD es pobre, no le hace justicia a la música incluida, pero como decimos muchas veces, es lo que hay. Otro disco que nos acompaña desde los albores del blog cabezón y ahora es renovado y recordado por Carlos M. y su Viaje al Espacio Visceral.

Sobre el disco (información tomada del libro "El otro rock mexicano" de David Cortés):

En 1983 el guitarrista Daniel Rivadeneyra estudiaba en el INBA (Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes) y allí conoció al bajista Manuel Lhomán y al tecladista Armando Ramírez. Como baterista se integró, procedente de Iconoclasta, Víctor Baldovinos, y poco después el grupo completó su alineación con el cantante Óscar Saldaña. Después de trabajar durante un año, en el cual grabaron un disco que permaneció largo tiempo enlatado (El teatro del delirio), el vocalista los abandonó y Víctor Baldovinos decidió dedicarse de tiempo completo a Iconoclasta; en su lugar entró el ex Queso Sagrado Alberto Herr.
El rock progresivo estaba en la cúspide, o al menos eso creían quienes lo practicaban. Comenta Daniel Rivadeneyra: "Hacíamos ciclos en el Auditorio Che Guevara, en el Museo del Chopo o en el Foro Isabelino que eran los tres lugares que tenían un jale tremendo. Estaban MCC, Nobilis Factum, Banda Elástica, The High Fidelity Orchestra y con esos grupos había mucho movimiento". Delirium tocaba en vivo insistentemente y, al llegar 1985, con una nueva alineación, habían pulido sus composiciones y se aprestaban a grabarlas. Invitaron al violinista Alfredo Flores y salieron del estudio con Primer diálogo, un álbum que subyuga por la alquimia entre sonidos barrocos y el rock, y por el manejo del contraste entre la guitarra y los teclados. Uno sentía las influencias clásicas, las reminiscencias a Bach y la energía del rock desplegarse en cortes completamente instrumentales como "Armagedón", "Primer diálogo" y "Atrio de las ánimas", los cuales se escuchaban contundentes, verdaderamente progresivos.
No obstante poseer composiciones cantadas, ninguna de ellas se coló en su debut. Al respecto Rivadeneyra comenta: "Estaba con nosotros Salvador Moreno, pero al llegar el momento de grabar, él finalmente decidió unirse a La Caja y por ello el disco se hizo totalmente instrumental". Primer diálogo fue mejor recibido en el extranjero y luego de su aparición, el grupo convertido en quinteto, surcó otra vez los escenarios del rock nacional, pero no logró dar continuidad a su trabajo fonográfico por un par de razones: las inestables condiciones económicas del país y el constante cambio de baterista. Invariablemente, cuando mejor acoplados estaban, el poseedor del sillín los abandonaba.

Vamos a ensayar una corta descripción de los temas.Armagedon: Tema en tono de celebración, sobresalen el violinista y el tecladista con un sonido muy similar al moog.
Atrio de las ánimas: Más meditativo, una dulce melodía es presentada por el violín para ser contestada con toda la banda, lidereada por el tecladista. La segunda mitad del tema, es a un ritmo más acelerado con todo el grupo siguiendo las melodías del tecladista. No hay lucha entre solistas, todo se escucha compuesto.
Nocturno en caminata: Pieza sinfónica en donde los solistas conversan durante toda la pieza. El guitarrista tiene el mismo sonido durante toda la pieza, electrica distorsionada. En los teclados sobresale el moog. Una de las mejores piezas del disco.
Primer dialogo: En la pieza que da nombre al disco, vuelva el violinista acompañado en lugar protagónico por el tecladista con sonido de clavicordio eléctrico y un sonido similar al birotron de Rick Wakeman en el Tormato (Don’t kill the whale).
Hellyet: Otra pieza en el mismo estilo de las dos anteriores.
Lagrimas: Esta pieza tiene una primera mitad muy apacible, llevada por la guitarra eléctrica y las percusiones. La segunda mitad es más sinfónica con todo el grupo.

The tracks tend to be kept short and fast, and they feature multiple solos and classical-inspired duels (many times counterpoint) between the guitarist and keyboardist. A couple of the tracks also feature violin..
Excellent keyboards-guitar driven progressive masterpiece from Mexico.Sometimes drk,sometimes epic with complex compositions . Overall: Highly recommented!

Mutant Sounds

DELIRIUM released their excellent debut album in 1985. The music here reminds me of ICONOCLASTA (especially the guitarist, who has the same tone as the Ricardo Moreno), but these guys were determined to create something more intense. The tracks tend to be kept short and fast, and they feature multiple solos and classical-inspired duels (many times counterpoint) between the guitarist and keyboardist. A couple of the tracks also feature violin. My only complaint here is that the CD is very short, at 31-minutes of length. The music is quite good, but maybe a 2-for-1 CD with both DELIRIUM albums would have been a better deal.

This is an album that i had not played for ages, actually i did not remember i had it until a couple of days ago when i was looking at La Pura Realidad line-up and realized that some of their members played here with Delirium, so i wanted to have a couple of listens to this album and write a few words about it.
This was another short-lived band that released their first album in the mid 80´s, i don´t really know the band´s history so i cannot give you a better detailed review about them, i like to do that with Mexican bands but only if i have enough information, if not, i wont tell you lies, the only i can say about them is that this album was released the same year of the terrible earthquake in my country, also that this band was formed by great musicians from the Mexican prog scene, Victor Valdovinos for instance, who had played before with Iconoclasta, and Manuel Lhoman who is one of the best bass players here, some of this members later formed other bands, Lhoman and violin player Alfredo Flores are playing with La Pura Realidad nowadays.
This album which you can call it both Delirium (self-titled) or Primer Diálogo, contains only 6 songs and a total time of 30 minutes, yes, a really short album, which doesn´t mean it is a bad one, not at all, there are some short albums that i consider masterpieces (Goblin - Profondo Rosso), but this is not the case, nevertheless, i find here a very nice effort from a debutant band.
"Armaguedon" is the opener track and probably one of my less favourites, it opens with a fast introduction, with violin and keyboards as the main instruments, despite the sound here is very symphonic, you will hear some fusion passages, this is a short instrumental song, some nice drums here and there by the way. "Atrio de las Animas", on the other hand, continues but with a soft and delicate sound, obviously slower than the previous song, but suddenly it becomes a bit "powerful" and "overwhelming" song, the melody is very recognizable and catchy, some moments sound alike to Iconoclasta, i believe this band also was influenced by bands like Camel for example. "Noctruno en Caminata" has keyboards as it´s essence, this song actually reminds me to some Wakeman moments not because of the playing style, but for the sound, in fact i also remember that album by Anders helmerson which has a very alike sound, the guitar are good in this song. "Primer Diálogo" is the title track and the longest one, in which at last we can listen something new or different, this is my favorite song of the album, a bombastic beginning, then a mid-tempo change and again that keyboarss reminding me some Anders Helmerson moments, here we can appreciate the violin as well. "Hellyet" is a soft melody which later turns faster and shows a nice guitar and drumming, short and nice song, not the best for sure. "Lagrimas" is the one that finishes the album and due to it´s starting, i would say the most experimental and original song of the album which features synths making some electronic noises, and later it becomes like a reprise of Nocturno en Caminata, nice song to finish the album.
As you may have noticed, this is not an album that i love, actually i would not recommend it if you are looking for new stuff or something different, this album sounds like other 20 but anyway i find it enjoyable and goog, but of course non-essential

Buen y muy disfrutable álbum. Espero que les guste. Basta escuchar el comienzo para quedar maravillado con este disco. Creo que para revalorar esta música la única forma es compartirla y difundirla.
