Un año memorable

Coincidiendo con la celebración de los XX Juegos de la Commonwealth en el verano del 2014 en Glasgow, la ciudad ha recibido un multimillonario lavado de cara: nuevas instalaciones deportivas, mejoras en transporte y la regeneración del puerto. También este año tendrá lugar el Year of Homecoming, una iniciativa para atraer a la diáspora escocesa a la “madre patria” con la celebración del patrimonio, la gastronomía y la bebida de Escocia. La oferta incluye algo para todos los gustos, desde el mayor festival de bandas de metal de Europa en Perthshire hasta un campeonato de orientación en castillos escoceses, pasando por el Festival del Whisky Spirit of Speyside en mayo. Pese a todo, la política ocupa un papel protagonista: ser o no ser independientes, esa es la cuestión. Prepárate, Escocia.

A memorable year

Coinciding with the celebration of the Games XX of the Commonwealth in the summer of 2014 in Glasgow, the city a multimillionaire washed of face has received: new sports facilities, an improve in transport and the regeneration of the port. Also this year will take place the Year of Homecoming, an initiative to attract to the Scotch people to the “Mother Country” with the celebration of the heritage, the gastronomy and the drink of Scotland. Aventura al aire libre

Escocia alberga uno de los mayores páramos naturales que quedan en Europa occidental, un refugio para la fauna y la flora. También es un territorio que invita a la aventura, donde se puede caminar por las mesetas de tundra de los Cairngorms, hacer equilibrios por las estrechísimas crestas suspendidas entre las rocosas cimas de los Cuillin, navegar en kayak entre las islas de las Hébridas Exteriores habitadas por focas, y dar un rápido paseo en lancha entre las aguas blancas del remolino de Corryvreckan. Además, se trata de un lugar que cambia según las estaciones, por lo que siempre que se visita ofrece algo nuevo. La primavera viene cargada de campanillas liliáceas en los bosques que rodean el Loch Lomond, mientras que, en verano, las playas de las Hébridas presumen de su arena dorada y sus aguas turquesa como si se tratase del Caribe. Octubre aporta un derroche de colores otoñales en los bosques de Perthshire y el invierno, una fina capa de crujiente nieve que cubre majestuosa los montes del Glen Coe.

Adventures outdoors

Scotland shelters one of the major natural high plateaus that stay in western Europe, a refuge for the fauna and the flora. Also it is a territory that it  invites to the adventure, where it is possible to walk along the plateaus of tundra of the Cairngorms, do balances for the narrowest combs suspended between the rocky tops of the Cuillin, sail in kayak between the islands of the Outer Hebrides lived by seals, and give a rapid walk in boat between the white waters of Corryvreckan’s whirlpool. Son batallas que jugaron un papel vital en la formación de una nación, que se recuerdan y reviven en lugares como Bannockburn y Culloden. Museos y galerías como Kelvingrove en Glasgow, Discovery Point en Dundee y el Museo Marítimo de Aberdeen rememoran la influencia de ingenieros, artistas, exploradores, escritores e inventores escoceses en el mundo moderno.

A long history

Scotland is a land with a rich and varied history; a place in which every corner of the landscape is anchored in the past: a desert farm to the shores of an island, a plain that was battlefield, a beach where the vikings were landing, a cave that used as refuge Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Hundreds of castles, from the simple but impressive towers of Smailholm and Hermitage up to elaborated strength of Caerlaverock and Craigmillar, testify the turbulent past of the country. They are battles that played a vital paper in the formation of a nation, which they remember and re-live in places like Bannockburn and Culloden. Museums and galleries like Kelvingrove in Glasgow, Discovery Point in Dundee and Aberdeen’s Maritime Museum recalls the influence of engineers, artists, explorers, writers and Scotch inventors in the modern world.

Pero no solo viajan a las brumosas costas escocesas los amantes de la historia y la adrenalina. Se profesa cada vez mayor respeto a los productos locales de alta calidad, lo que significa que se puede disfrutar de marisco fresco a las pocas horas de su captura, y de ternera y venado que se han criado a solo unos kilómetros del restaurante, así como de hortalizas cultivadas en el huerto macrobiótico del propio hotel. Todo ello maridado con un buen whisky de malta, rico, evocador y complejo, el verdadero sabor de Escocia. 

The flavor of Scotland

Dinero: La moneda de curso legal en Gran Bretaña es la libra esterlina (£), que se divide en 100 peniques. Tres bancos escoceses emiten su propio papel moneda, lo que significa que hay distintos tipos de billetes en circulación. Todos ellos son también de curso legal en Inglaterra, pero en algunos casos puede haber problemas para cambiarlos, sobre todo fuera del Reino Unido. En Escocia, los euros solo se aceptan en las principales atracciones turísticas y en algunos hoteles de alta categoría; siempre es más recomendable pagar con libras en efectivo.

Money: The legal tender in Great Britain is the pound sterling (£), that is divided in 100 pences. Three Scotch banks issue his own paper it coins, which means that there are different types of money in circulation. All of them are also of legal tender in England, but in some cases there can be problems to change them, especially out of the United Kingdom. In Scotland, the Euros only are accepted in the principal tourist attractions and in some hotels of high category; always it is more advisable to pay with pounds  in cash.

Cajeros automáticos: Llamados cashpoints, abundan en todo el país y suele haber al menos uno en las localidades de menor tamaño. Se pueden utilizar tarjetas Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Cirrus, Plus y Maestro para retirar dinero en los cajeros pertenecientes a casi todos los bancos y sociedades de crédito hipotecario de Escocia. En algunos cajeros se cobra una pequeña comisión por la retirada de efectivo, pero por lo general son gratuitos.

Cash dispensers: So called cashpoints, abound in the whole country and there is in the habit of being at least one in the localities of minor size. Cards can be in use Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Cirrus, for withdrawing money in the belonging cashiers to almost all the banks and companies of mortgage loan of Scotland. Credit cards: The most widespread cards are Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Diners Club, though in some trades commission recovers in the payment with card (normally in small transactions). In the smallest establishments, it is possible that there are not accepted financial cards like Amex and Diners Club. Those of debit or credit like Visa and MasterCard are more widespread, though in the B*B of minor size it is possible that they do not accept any.

Cambio de moneda: Hay que tener cuidado al cambiar dinero en las oficinas de cambio, pues ofrecen tipos favorables pero a menudo cobran comisiones sumamente elevadas. Los mejores lugares para cambiar dinero en el Reino Unido son las oficinas de correos, pero este servicio solo está disponible en las localidades de mayor tamaño. En las oficinas de turismo más importantes también cambian moneda.

Salud

Si el viajero es ciudadano de la UE, la Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea (TSE) –disponible en centros de salud o, en el Reino Unido, en oficinas de correos– ofrece una cobertura sanitaria básica. No se incluyen los tratamientos que no sean urgentes ni la repatriación de emergencia. Los ciudadanos de países no pertenecientes a la UE deben comprobar si su país dispone de un acuerdo de reciprocidad con el Reino Unido respecto a la cobertura médica. Si es necesario contratar un seguro médico, conviene asegurarse de que cubra los casos más graves, como un accidente que requiera la repatriación. Para viajar a Escocia no es necesaria ninguna vacuna. La principal molestia para el viajero en las Highlands y las islas son los mosquitos.

Health:

If the traveler is a citizen of the EU, the Sanitary European Card (TSE) – availably in centers of health or, in the United Kingdom, in offices of post office – it offers a sanitary basic coverage. There are not included the treatments that are urgent not even the emergency repatriation.

The citizens of countries not belonging to the EU must verify if his country has in an agreement of reciprocity with the United Kingdom with regard to the medical coverage. Los autobuses suelen ser el medio más barato para desplazarse, pero también el más lento. Con un bono, los trenes pueden resultar competitivos; son también más rápidos y atraviesan a menudo hermosos paisajes.

The public transport to move in Scotland are, in general, good, but they can turn out to be slightly expensive compared with other European countries. Una amplia red de autobuses cubre la mayor parte de Escocia. No obstante, en las zonas rurales apartadas los servicios se orientan más a las necesidades de los vecinos –ir al colegio o a las tiendas de la población importante más cercana– y puede que los horarios no convengan a los visitantes.

- Bus

A wide network of buses covers most of Scotland. Nevertheless, in the rural isolated zones the services are orientated more to the needs of the neighbors – to go to the college or to the shops of the most nearby important population – and it is possible that the schedules are not convenient for the visitors.

Royalmail buses (www.postbus.royalmail.com) Minibuses or cars of four squares led by post-office workers who deliver and gather the sending. Official stops do not exist and the traveler can detain them in any point of the route. Though the service has stood out in the last years, still it is the only public transport in some isolated zones.

La red ferroviaria de Escocia cubre todas las ciudades y pueblos importantes, aunque sobre el mapa aparecen muchas zonas vacías en las Highlands y las Southern Uplands, donde será preciso viajar en autobús o coche. La línea de West Highland desde Glasgow a Fort William y Mallaig, y la de Inverness a Kyle of Lochalsh, son dos de los trayectos más pintorescos del mundo.

The railway network of Scotland covers all the cities and important villages, though on the map many empty zones appear in the Highlands and the Southern Uplands, where it will be necessary to travel in bus or car. West Highland’s line from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig, and that of Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, they are two of the most picturesque distances of the world.

- Alojarse en Edimburgo

Uno de los hoteles con más historia de la ciudad es el Hotel Balmoral. Abierto desde 1902 se erige sobre la estación de trenes de Waverley y, además de ser uno de los hoteles más lujosos de Edimburgo, es una de las atracciones más contempladas de la New Town, especialmente su torre del reloj, que preside Princess Street.

El Hotel Balmoral cuenta con todas las amenidades que puedes esperar de un hotel de lujo, con habitaciones de 28m2 totalmente equipadas, piscina climatizada, SPA y uno de los restaurantes más reconocidos de la ciudad. El precio, no obstante, es algo prohibitivo, rondando los 190€ por habitación doble y noche.

- Edinburgh

One of the hotels with more history of the city is the Balmoral´s Hotel. Opened from 1902 it is raised on the station of Waverley’s trains and, beside being one of the most luxurious hotels of Edinburgh, is one of the attractions most contemplated of the New Town, specially his tower of the clock, at which Princess Street presides.

The Balmoral´s Hotel relies on all the amenities that you can expect from a hotel of luxury, with rooms of 28m2 totally equipped, with swimming pool, SPA and one of the most recognized restaurants of the city. The price, nevertheless, is something prohibitive, courting the 190 € for double room per night.

- Alojarse en Glasgow

Glasgow tiene una gran oferta hotelera en la cual podemos encontrar hoteles con muy buena relación calidad/precio y algunos más lujosos, si bien la capital de los hoteles con historia es Edimburgo. Una de las opciones más atractivas, no obstante, es el Hotel CitizenM Glasgow un hotel boutique en el centro de Glasgow –a menos de 5 minutos andando de la estación central de trenes-, con un diseño moderno y un precio muy equilibrado.

El Hotel CitizenM Glasgow cuenta con sólo 10 habitaciones, todas ellas equipadas con camas King size, Wi-fi gratuito y un toque futurista ayudado en gran parte por su sistema de iluminación ambiental regulable. Alojarse en este hotel boutique es bastante barato, con opciones desde 80€ por noche y habitación doble.

One of the most attractive options, nevertheless, is the CitizenM Glasgow´s Hotel a hotel boutique in the center of Glasgow – to less than 5 minutes walking of the main station of trains-, with a modern design and a very balanced price.

The CitizenM Glasgow´s Hotel possesses only 10 rooms, all of them equipped with beds King size, free Wi-fi and a futurist touch helped largely by his system of environmental adjustable lighting.  Stay at this hotel is cheap enough, with options from 80 € in double room per night.

1. Montes Cuillin: Cimas escarpadas y pináculos inaccesibles. 

Las Cuillin  son una cadena de montañas rocosas ubicadas en la isla de Skyeen Escocia (Reino Unido). Las verdaderas Cuillin son también conocidas como las Cuillins Negras para distinguirse las las Colinas Rojas al otro lado de Glen Sligachan. Las Colinas Rojas son más bajas y, siendo menos rocosas, tienen menos escaladas o trepaduras. El punto más elevado de las Cuillin, y de la isla de Skye, es Sgurr Alasdair en la Cuillins Negras con 992 m (3255 ft).

1. Cuillin hills: steep tops and inaccessible pinnacles. The Cuillin are a range of rocky mountains located in Skyeen Escocia’s island (United Kingdom). The real Cuillin are known also as the black Cuillins and the Red hills to be distinguished to another Glen Sligachan’s side. The Red Hills are lower and, being less rocky, have fewer escalations. 2. Coast northwest of the Highlands and Loch Ness: The Loch Ness placed in the ‘Highlands” of Scotland, is one of the most famous and precious lakes of the world. According to the legend there lives the monster ‘Nessie’ down the waters and every year thousands of tourists visit Lake Ness in search, not only of the monster, but of the landscape, of the history and of the culture of the Highlands. Pero Edimburgo ofrece mucho más; hay excelentes tiendas, restaurantes de primera y un sinfín de bares. It is necessary to leave in house the prejudices and enjoy without mufflers of this simple metropolis, where to spend it well is the important thing.

En mi opinión, hay que marcar este destino en la lista de viajes a realizar. Si vives en Europa es un lugar que hay que visitar, tiene unos paisajes preciosos cómo hemos podido ver, unos pueblos con encanto, y  viajando desde Europa es económicamente bastante accesible. Si te gusta el deporte de montaña, ofrece muchas rutas para el viajero.  Siempre he querido ir a visitar Escocia, esperemos que este año pueda ir. Buen viaje y a visitar Escocia!!!!

In my opinion, it is necessary to mark this destination in the list of trips to realizing.
