El huerto

En nuestra visita a Salamanca el pasado junio Marina pudo ver los huertos que hay rodeando Villar de Argañán. Todos bien ordenaditos y llenos de verduras. Y como a ella el orden y las verduras le encantan, la idea de empezar un pequeño huerto aquí en Glenorchy tuvo el empujoncito final que necesitaba.



Ya en abril desbrozó la parcela de veintiún metros cuadrados que el antiguo Chef de Blanket Bay utilizaba como huerto personal. Es un pequeño terreno que tiene tierra bastante buena y que ha estado descansando durante los últimos tres años.
Una vez desbrozado lo cubrió todo con cartones y, aquí ya empecé a echarle una mano, pusimos una capa de excrementos de caballo cubriéndolo todo. En realidad lo hicimos en dos mitades, la mitad de Marina era tierra-cartones-caca-pinaza mientras que la mía era tierra-caca-cartones.
Hace un mes más o menos quitamos los cartones y removimos la tierra, a la que tuvimos que echar tres kilos de cal viva porque el suelo de Glenorchy es muy ácido, y la pinaza lo había acidificado aún más. En esas estábamos que en Blanket Bay se enteraron del proyecto, y empezó a llover la ayuda. Conseguimos que Per, el jardinero, fuese a casa de Brent, el nuevo director, a coger tierra con una excavadora y un tráiler y traérnosla a casa. Esta tierra proviene de una explotación ovejera y es básicamente la mezcla de tierra con sesenta años de excrementos de ovejas. No hay tierra mejor. Rico, rico.

Una vez tuvimos todo en su sitio, lo removimos todo y lo dejamos reposando hasta que sea época de siembra (aquí a mediados de noviembre), pero como no tenemos paciencia nos compramos un pequeño invernadero.


Lo hemos instalado en el porche de nuestra casa y en él ya tenemos creciendo un montón de lechugas, acelgas, ajos tiernos, albahaca, perejil y en breves plantaremos pepinos, pimientos, melones, sandías, remolachas, zanahorias… En cuanto al elemento más importante de la cocina tradicional catalana, el tomate, tenemos veinticinco tomateras creciendo en la habitación más soleada de la casa.




El siguiente paso es construir una valla rodeando al huerto que evite la entrada de conejos, liebres y possums y empezar a replantar lo que ya tenemos creciendo en el invernadero. ¿Conseguiremos tener melones? ¿Sobrevivirán las tomateras? ¿Se comerán los conejos las lechugas? Las respuestas a todas estas preguntas vendrán entre enero y febrero. Enrique & Marina

OUR VEGGIE PATCH
In our last visit to Salamanca, my grandparents’ city back in Spain, Marina could see all the orchards that are surrounding my childhood’s villaje. They are all very well organized and full of super healthy vegetables. She loves order/organization and vegetables so the idea that had been brewing inside her head about starting a veggie patch in our staff houses reached the boiling temperature.



Already in April she had cleared the 21 square meters patch that the old Executive Chef of Blanket Bay had in our garden to grow some vegetables. It is a small area full of good soil that has been resting for the last four years, so it should be full of nutrients.
Once the patch was cleared she put a layer of cardboard covering the soil and then a layer of horse manure. Here is when I started giving her a hand. One half of the veggie garden was soil-cardboard-horse poo-pine needles whereas the other one was soil-horse poo-cardboard.
A month ago we got rid of the cardboard and moved the soil and horse manure so we had a uniform mixture. We had to add 3 kg of lime in order to lower the acidity levels of the soil. Just in this moment, people at Blanket Bay found out about Marina’s project and helping hands began to come. Matt allowed us to use the working ute and a trailer, Brent let us get top soil from his place (ship droppings from the last 60 years, can you think of anything better?), and Per came with the loader so we didn’t have to shovel it to the trailer. He delivered one full trailer of extremely rich top soil to our doorstep.

Now was our turn of shoveling it to the veggie patch, mix it with the soil and horse manure that was already there and let it rest until planting time (mid november). But we are not very patient so we bought a small greenhouse that we put in the deck of our house.


We have already growing some lettuces, silverbeet, chives, parsley, basil and son we’ll plant zucchini, melón, watermelon, beetroot, carrots… And we are also using the sunniest room of the house to grow tomatoes: we have 25 tomato plants growing there.




The next step will be building a fence to avoid rabbits and possums have a feast in the veggie patch once we start planting everything there. Will we be able to grow melons? Will all the tomato plants survive? Will the lettuces be eaten by the rabbits? We’ll answer this questions, but not until next January! Enrique & Marina
