Entrevista a un redactor freelance: Luis Sandoval

          La entrada que os traigo hoy es muy especial, porque por primera vez he podido entrevistar a alguien perteneciente al ámbito del freelance. Su nombre es Luis Sandoval, de Venezuela, y se dedica al ámbito de la redacción. Estáis de suerte, porque esta vez me toca callarme y dejar que sea otra persona la que nos cuente más cosas acerca de este mundo. Vamos allá con la entrevista.

LS: ¡Hola! Antes de responder, me gustaría agradecer esta oportunidad de expresarme, pienso que es una manera de crecer en este mundo.C: Cuéntanos exactamente a qué te dedicas como freelance, qué tipo de servicio es el que ofreces, y cuánto tiempo llevas trabajando en eso.LS: Me dedico a escribir, a generar contenido. Ofrezco mis servicios como redactor, transcripciones ya sea de documentos, vídeo, audios, etc. Escribo posts, artículos de noticias y todo lo que normalmente hace un redactor freelance. Pero de todo esto me encanta la creatividad y siempre dejar un mensaje al lector, por esta razón es que escribo historias, relatos, etc. Y en cuanto a los mensajes, tengo mi propio blog de reflexiones y consejos (Consejos y reflexiones únicas DX). Ofrezco varias cositas, sin embargo he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar como redactor de artículos de diversas temáticas y una que otra descripción de productos. ¿Cuánto tiempo llevo? Yo diría que aproximadamente 5 años en este mundo (blogs, canal youtube, post taringa, etc), pero de lleno y para clientes alrededor de 1 año.C: ¿El mundo freelance te encontró a ti, o tú encontraste el mundo freelance? Me refiero, si siempre habías soñado con tener este tipo de trabajo, o si por el contrario, simplemente apareció de casualidad en tu vida y decidiste probar suerte.

LS: Creo que ambos nos encontramos ja ja ja. Siempre me llamó la atención este mundo, empezando por crear contenido y que los demás lo disfrutaran, es por eso que llegué a tener mi canal de youtube, donde pude generar mis primeros dólares. Era como una afición con remuneración. No exactamente lo soñaba como un trabajo sino como una forma de darme a conocer y ya, me veía trabajando como la mayoría de personas pero creando contenido a través de internet. Con el tiempo las cosas cambiaron y me encontré con el término "freelance", me animé y dije: "Comenzaré a trabajar seriamente por aquí". En resumen, lo encontré y luego él me buscó y me dijo: "Hagamos de lo nuestro algo serio" ja ja ja.

C: Desde el contexto de tu país, ¿el trabajo freelance se ve como un trabajo serio en el sentido de poder ganarse la vida viviendo de ello, o por el contrario se ve simplemente como un trabajo secundario para ganar unos ahorros a fin de mes?

LS: Según lo que sé, son muy pocos los que lo toman como algo para vivir de ello. Sin embargo, es este último año debido a la crisis que el sueldo de un empleado no alcanza para nada, por lo que muchos buscan otros horizontes, responder encuestas por internet, etc, entre otras formas de ganar dinero. Menciono esto porque es una señal de que muchas personas pueden tomarse en serio esto del freelance. En resumen, muy pocos se lo toman en ese sentido y unos pocos más están comenzando a tomarlo en serio.

C: Dentro de tu sector de trabajo, ¿qué es lo peor y lo mejor que has encontrado?

LS: Bueno, lo mejor como tal creo que no ha llegado, pero de mis experiencias sería gran cantidad de trabajo con libertad de horario, me ocurrió en diciembre del año pasado, lo considero como lo mejor porque me encontraba de vacaciones (soy estudiante), y necesitaba ahorrar para el próximo semestre y llegó una buena cantidad de trabajo que me ayudó a mantener mi semestre. Lo peor fue mi primer trabajo, un precio sumamente bajo, ¡pero BAJO! Y lo peor, que por la necesidad y la falta de experiencia lo tomé.

C: ¿Crees que hay demasiada globalización dentro de la redacción freelance en internet? Si es así, ¿consideras que esto es bueno porque ayuda a que tu trabajo sea reconocido, o en cambio piensas que esto incrementará la competencia a niveles exagerados?
LS: Creo que sí, hay mucha globalización, la competencia cada día aumenta más y pienso que seguirá aumentando. En parte es bueno por lo que mencionas de que sea reconocido ¡Oye, qué bien que mi comunidad crezca! Pero por otro lado eso significa más competencia, y lo malo sería que en vez de unirnos y exigir lo que realmente vale nuestro trabajo, por el contrario "se regala el trabajo" a precios muy bajos, lo que provoca que también regales tu trabajo o que tengas menos clientes. La ventaja nuestra (los que ya comenzamos) es que cuando la comunidad crezca más, tendremos más experiencia probablemente.

C: En relación a la última pregunta, ¿qué medidas tomarías para mejorar el mercado laboral de redactores freelance?

LS: Sinceramente no tengo una respuesta clara, pero me gustaría concienciar a todos los freelance para que no regalemos nuestro trabajo, que es el gran problema que existe actualmente. En cuanto a la redacción específicamente, me gustaría que el SEO no tenga más peso que la calidad, se demandan mucho los artículos SEO limitando la calidad. La mejor medida (para mí) sería unir a un grupo grande de freelance y entre todos hacer respetar los precios.

C: Teniendo en cuenta lo dicho anteriormente, ¿qué recomendaciones les darías a las personas que quieran embarcarse en la aventura del trabajo freelance?

LS: Bueno, todo depende de su situación. Si están a cargo económicamente de su hogar no le recomiendo que abandone su trabajo, sino que busque un espacio y tiempo para comenzar en el freelance. De lo contrario podría libremente comenzar a dedicar tiempo completo al mundo freelance. Les recomiendo ser perseverantes (se lo dice alguien con poca paciencia, pero que aquí está ja ja ja), si se desmayan vuelvan a levantarse, estudien acerca de su área para tener buenas cosas que ofrecer, hagan amistades con otros freelance ¡Nunca se rindan!

C: Esta última pregunta es la pregunta regalo; explica y habla sobre algo que no haya salido en las preguntas anteriores, y que crees que es importante tener en cuenta.

LS: Me gustaría hablar de las comunidades freelance, foros, etc. Es importante que estos foros crezcan y se mantengan activos, pues es una forma de que todos estemos comunicados y nos apoyemos. Muy importante es nuestra participación, en caso de los redactores y los que tenemos blogs, nos ayuda mucho a la hora de organizar "posts invitados" y todo tipo de actividad que aumente nuestro crecimiento y visibilidad. Todo tipo de esfuerzo y colaboración tarde o temprano será recompensada.

          The blogpost for today is very special, because for the first time I have interviewed someone from the freelance sector. His name is Luis Sandoval, from Venezuela, and he's an editor. You're in luck, because this time I'm going to shut my mouth and let the other person to tell us more things about this world. Let's go with the interview.

LS: Hi! First of all, I would like to thank this opportunity to express myself, I think it's a way of growing in this field.C: Tell us exactly what is your job as a freelance, what kind of service do you offer, and how long have you been working on that.

LS: I write, I create content. I offer my services as editor, I caption documents, videos, audios, etc. I write posts, news articles and everything that a freelance editor usually does. But among all this, I love creativity and I always leave a message for the reader, that's why I write stories, tales, etc... And in terms of messages, I have my own blog about reflections and advises (Consejos y Reflexiones Únicas DX). I offer many things, nevertheless I have had the opportunity of working as an articles editor of many topics and some products description. How long? I would say I have been working in this world about 5 years (blogs, youtube channel, taringa post, etc), but for clients, about 1 year.

C: Did the freelance world find you, or did you find it? I mean if you always dreamed about having this kind of job, or it just appeared in your life randomly and you decided to give it a try.

LS: I think we found each other ha ha ha. This world always catched my attention, starting with the creation of content for everyone to enjoy it, that's why I had my youtube channel where I could earn my first dollars. It was like a paid hobby. I didn't think about it as a job, but as a way to make myself known and that's all, I saw myself working like most people but creating content through internet. Things changed eventually and I found the term "freelance", so I was encouraged and told to myself: "I will start to work seriously here". In short, I found it and then it looked for me and told me: "Let's make our relationship serious" ha ha ha.

C: From the context of your country, is the freelance work seen as something serious in terms of making a living of that, ot it's just seen as a secondary job to get savings at the end of the month?

LS: According to what I know, just a few people take it seriously to make a living of that, However, this last year the salary of an employee is not enough due to the crisis, so many people are looking beyond, they're completing surveys on internet, etc, among other things to earn money. I mention that because this is an indication that many people could take freelance seriously. In short, just a few understand it in that sense, and many others are starting to take it seriously.

C: Within your working field, what is the worst and the best thing you have found?

LS: Well, I think the best is yet to come, but from my experiences it would be the big amount of work with free schedules, it occurred to me on december last year, I think it was the best because I was on holidays (I'm a student), and I needed to save money for the next semester and I got a big amout of work which helped me to keep my semester. The worst was my first job, it was at a extremely low price, EXTREMELY LOW! And the worst, I took it because of necessity and the lack of experience.

C: Do you think there is a lot of globalization inside the editor freelance jobs on internet? If so, do you think that's good because it helps your job to be recognized, or do you think that it increases competence at very high levels?
LS: I think so, there's a lot of globalization, competence increases everyday and it will keep increasing. Partly it's a good thing for what you mentioned about recognition. What a good thing that my community grows! But on the other hand, that means more competence, and the bad thing would be that instead of joining forces and demanding the real value of our job, "our work is given for free" at really low prices, which causes that you give your job for free too, or you have less clients. Our advantage (the ones who already started) is that when the community grows more, we will have more experience probably.

C: Regarding the last question, what actions would you take to improve the freelance editors marketplace?LS: Honestly, I don't have a clear answer, but I would like to make aware every freelance worker to not undervalue our work, because that's the big problem nowadays. In terms of writing, I would like that SEO was not more important than quality, there a lot of demand for SEO which limits the quality. The best action (for me) would be to join together a big group of freelancers and enforce prices between all.C: Taking into account what has been previously said, what suggestions would you give to all those who are thinking about embarking on the adventure of freelance?LS: Well, all depends on their situation. If they economically support their home I don't recommend to quit their jobs, but looking for a space and time to start with freelance. On the contrary I could start to dedicate my full time to freelance. I suggest them to be persistent (someone with little patience is telling you that, and here I am ha ha ha), if you pass out get up again, study your area to have good things to offer, make friendships with other freelancers. Never give up!C: This last question is the gift question; explain and talk about something that didn't come out in the previous questions, and that you think it's important to be considered.LS: I would like to talk about freelance communities, forums, etc. It's important for these forums to grow and to be active, because it's a way of communicating and supporting between us. Our participation is very important, in the case of editors and the ones who have blogs, it helps a lot when it comes to organize "guest posts" and every kind of activity that increases our growth and visibility. Sooner or later, all the effort and colaboration will be rewarded.          This is the end of the interview!
