John W. Cooper va a salir de prisión en libertad condicional tras cumplir dieciséis años de condena. En 2006, el detective superintendente Steve Wilkins, revisando casos antiguos no resueltos, advierte que algunos crímenes cometidos en los años noventa, antes de la detención de Cooper, comparten algunas características con los delitos que se le imputaron a éste, por lo que insta a sus superiores a abrir nuevas investigaciones aprovechando los avances científicos en lo que a técnicas forenses se refiere.
