Excursión a la base de las torres del paine

El emblema del Parque Nacional de las Torres del Paine son, evidentemente, las Torres del Paine; tres agujas de granito alineadas de norte a sur que guardan el Río Paine (azul), que son parte del Macizo Paine. Como curiosidad geológica nos gustaría destacar que la Cordillera o Macizo Paine (12 millones de años) es totalmente independiente de la Cordillera de los Andes Patagónicos (65 a 13 millones de años). Con permisos especiales y la habilidad necesaria se puede escalar hasta la cima de las Torres del Paine, desde donde las vistas deben ser muy bonitas, pero las personas normales debemos conformarnos con subir únicamente hasta su base haciendo la excursión que se conoce como “Base Torres”. 


Empezaremos con un aviso a navegantes: el Parque Nacional de las Torres del Paine debe de ser  el parque natural peor organizado e incómodo de acceder en el que hemos estado. Es precioso, pero acceder a él es una pesadilla de tal calibre que uno se plantea mirar las postales e irse a otro lado.
El organismo encargado de administrar los parques naturales de Chile se llama CONAF (Corporación Nacional Forestal) y debe tener menos fondos que Cáritas, y no porque la entrada sea barata, sino porque el manejo del dinero generado por el parque es una vergüenza mayúscula.
El precio de la entrada es de unos 30 € para extranjeros y de 8 € para chilenos o gente que trabaja en la zona. Hay dos entradas al parque: la Portería de Laguna Amarga por el este o la Portería de la Administración CONAF por el oeste. No hay transporte público hasta ninguna de las dos entradas por lo que han nacido empresas de autobuses que hacen de lanzaderas desde Puerto Natales o Punta Arenas hasta el parque. Buses Fernández, Buses Gómez, Bus Sur, Buses Herminia, Buses Ojeda… son algunos de los operadores. Todos salen diariamente entres las 7 y las 7:30 de la terminal de autobuses de Puerto Natales.DE 7:15 A 9:30Viajamos desde Puerto Natales hasta la Portería de Laguna Amarga utilizando uno de estos operadores de autobuses de andar por casa que por 13000 Pesos Chilenos (20 €) te llevan y te traen del parque. El autobús era de la época de la Guerra de Vietnam y las carreteras son de ripio y bastante reviradas, así que el viaje es movidito.
DE 9:30 A 10:30Una vez en la Portería de Laguna Amarga se juntan todos los autobuses, tanto los que salieron a las 7 como los que lo hicieron a y cuarto o a y media, para que acceder al parque sea más tedioso. De repente se forma una cola gigante para comprar la entrada al parque ya que, atención, sólo si vas con un guía privado se puede comprar la entrada con antelación. Una vez hecha la cola uno consigue pagar la entrada, válida para tres días, pero queda el último paso: para entrar al parque hay que ver un vídeo de 5 minutos donde CONAF te pide no tirar basura y no quemar el bosque. DE 10:30 A 11:15Para facilitar las cosas la Portería de Laguna Amarga está a 20 minutos en autobús de donde empieza la excursión más emblemática del parque. Así que hay que ir hasta la lanzadera, pagar 3000 Pesos Chilenos (4 €) y esperar a que el bus se llene.
DE 11:15 A 13:30La lanzadera te deja en los terrenos del Hotel Las Torres, un hotel gigantesco y bastante feo desde el que, curiosamente, no se ven las torres. Desde ahí el camino no tiene ninguna indicación así que uno vaga siguiendo a las hordas de turistas confiando que quien sea que camine primero sepa a dónde va. El día que fuimos nosotros el guardaparque que sube al autobús a darte la bienvenida nos dijo que el sendero hacia la base de las torres estaba cerrado debido al viento. Esto hizo que mucha gente decidiese hacer otras cosas. Marina y yo, habituados ya al viento patagónico, decidimos arriesgarnos. Una vez encontrado el camino tardamos un poco más de dos horas en llegar hasta el Campamento Chileno, administrado por el operador turístico privado Fantástico Sur. Y aquí viene otra pequeña explicación del despropósito que es este parque. 
El parque está tan saturado de excursionistas que CONAF no da a basto así que hay dos empresas privadas que administran 4 zonas de acampada cada una, a las que no se puede entrar sin reserva y por las que hay que pagar un precio vergonzoso por quedarse (1 € por usar el lavabo y 2 € por ducharte por ejemplo). Un claro ejemplo de empresas privadas beneficiándose a bolsillos llenos de las infraestructuras creadas con dinero público.El día después de hacer la excursión saltó la noticia de que el Campamento Chileno tenía una plaga de chinches.DE 13:30 A 14:30Después del Campamento Chileno caminamos un poquito por el bosque, donde nos encontramos un cartel de bienvenida en el que nos saludaba la mascota del parque: un castor. Aquí no hay castores. Qué bizarro.
La ascensión hasta la Base de las Torres es cortita pero con una pendiente muy pronunciada. El camino atraviesa un pedregal de rocas muy grandes en una zona muy expuesta al viento. Son entre 30 y 45 minutos de caminata donde hay que ir on mucho cuidado tanto por las rocas como por la fuerza del viento, que a mí me tiró al suelo un par de veces.Los guías de AWASI tienden a ir a Base Torres a las 5 de la madrugada e incluso a veces a las 12 de la noche para llegar a la base al amanecer (aquí amanece sobre las 4) ya que dicen que hay tanta gente haciendo el camino durante el día que parece una procesión de Semana Santa. Por suerte para nosotros mucha gente se creyó que el sendero estaba cerrado y estuvimos prácticamente solos.
DE 14:30 A 17:30El descenso, como siempre, es mucho más rápido que el ascenso y en tres horas ya estábamos en los terrenos del Hotel Las Torres.
DE 17:30 A 19:00Los autobuses de vuelta desde Laguna Amarga parten a las 19 H o las 19:45 (el nuestro) así que estuvimos una hora y media sentados en el suelo al lado de la tienda de souvenirs esperando a la última lanzadera (otros 3000 Pesos Chilenos por persona) que nos llevase hasta la portería.DE 19:00 A 20:15Cogimos la lanzadera y llegamos hasta la portería, donde no había ningún autobús. Ahí estuvimos esperando junto a unos italianos y unos canadienses que vivían al lado de Lake Louise y con los que hablamos del castor que hace de mascota del parque. Al final hacia las 20:15 apareció el convoy de autobuses de las 19:45.
DE 20:15 A 22:30La carretera de vuelta a Puerto Natales hace subida por lo que los autobuses tardan 45 minutos más que a la ida en hacer el trayecto. Al final llegamos de vuelta al Hostal Donde Kike, nuestra casa en Puerto Natales, a las 22:45. En total habíamos estado fuera algo más de 15 horas de las cuales caminamos sólo 6, y todo por el módico precio de 25000 Pesos Chilenos por persona (14000 más si no hubiésemos podido demostrar que vivimos y trabajamos en Chile). Obviando que la vista de las Torres del Paine es muy bonita el día nos pareció tedioso, aburrido, pesado, caro y frustrante. Si uno quiere entrar al juego de ir a campings gestionados por administradores privados en parques mantenidos con dinero público que tienen un aspecto medio presentable únicamente por la pasión de los guardaparques que trabajan por una miseria (no hay dinero dice CONAF, a pesar de cobrar una entrada ridículamente cara) el Parque Nacional de las Torres del Paine es definitivamente un lugar al que ir a acampar (hacer el circuito W por ejemplo). Si uno lo que quiere es ir un día por libre a hacer un par de excursiones sale mucho más a cuenta alquilar un coche, cosa que hicimos nosotros el día después.

The icon of the Torres del Paine National Park are obviously the Torres del Paine; which are three skinny granitic needles lined from North to South that belong to the Paine Massif. Side geology note: the Paine Range or Massif (12 million years old) is completely independent from the Patagonic Andes (65 to 13 million years old). Given the right skills and permits, the towers could be climbed. In our case we lacked both and had to only reach the bottom where there is a lake and it’s probably the most popular trail in the park known simply as Base Torres.   

Let’s be clear from the beginning: Torres del Paine National Park is very poorly organised and the most inconvenient place to arrive where we’ve ever hiked in our lives. It is very pretty but a complete nightmare to explore and we honestly do considerer to just look at pictures of it or go elsewhere instead of to the park on our time off. 
CONAF (National Forest Corporation) is the only public organ organising Natural parks among many other subjects regarding the environment in Chile. There’s an entry fee to step on the park and I bet they also collect money from all their other branches and still the management seems really poor. 
The tickets for the park costs 30 € per person for foreigners and 8 € for national visitors and people who works in the area or at least has Chilean ID (like we luckily do). There’re two main entries to the park: Portería de Laguna Amarga on the East side and Portería de la Administración CONAF on the West. There isn’t any public transport to take you there so there’re plenty of private companies that offer transport to both locations. Buses Fernández, Buses Gómez, Bus Sur, Buses Herminia, Buses Ojeda… are some of the many operators. They all leave Natales some time from 7 am to 7:30 am from the Rodoviario (the only bus terminal in town). FROM 7:15 TO 9:30We travelled from Puerto Natales to Portería de Laguna Amarga on one of those buses that charge around 13.000 Chilean pesos (20 €) for the return trip. The bus wasn’t the newest thing on Earth and so aren’t the roads that aren’t tar sealed and have many turns and slopes providing with all the ingredients for a rough ride. 
FROM 9:30 TO 10:30All the buses that left Natales in the morning meet at the Laguna Amarga office regardless if they left at 7, 7:15 or 7:30. Everyone is going to be there and join the massive queue of people trying to pay for their tickets to access the park. Only private guides are allowed to purchase tickets in advanced. After paying for the tickets, valid for 3 days, there’s just one last step: watching a 5 minutes video in Spanish with English subtitles which can be summarised in tree premises: take all your garbage out; do not make any fire except in designated areas; stay on the trails. FROM 10:30 TO 11:15To make the day even more exciting, Laguna Amarga’s gate is about 20 minutes far driving from the start of any trails and particularly from Base Torres start. So, again, we had to jump on a different bus, pay 3.000 Chilean Pesos, and wait for about 20 more minutes until the bus was full to depart.  
FROM 11:15 TO 13:30That shuttle leaves you within the land of the Hotel Las Torres which is pretty big but not a very nice looking building and doesn’t have any views of the Torres. From the place where the bus leaves you there aren’t any signs pointing the way and we all basically just followed the first tourist with the hopes that that first lot knows where to go. A park ranger jumps on each bus to do a short briefing in Spanish and English. That day he said that the trail to Base Torres was partially close and therefore the lookout of the the Torres couldn’t be reached… Many people chose alternative trails to do. Enrique and I decided to go ahead with the plan since the wind didn’t feel strong compared with what we had felt in Patagonia and we didn’t go through all that trouble to not see anything worth the effort (there aren’t any other interesting day hikes other than Base Torres from Laguna Amarga). After we found the trail head, it took us just over two hours to get to the Chilean Camp, operated by the private company Fantástico Sur. And yet another disappointment about this park. 
The park is so crowded with visitors that CONAF is unable to accommodate them all and there’re two external companies that manage 4 camping areas each. Campers still need to book though a terribly unorganised system and pay ridiculous prices to stay there in a very simple accommodation. Furthermore, since those are private premises services like toilets aren’t free for the visitors that already paid the entry fee.  To top it up, just the day after our visit, it was made public that the Chilean Camp had to close its operation due to a plague of bedbugs. Another example of bad cooperation of private and public organisations.FROM 13:30 TO 14:30After the Chilean Camp we walked in the forest for a while and saw a sing with a beaver welcoming us and giving some rules. That was confusing because there aren’t beavers in the area and the beavers you may find in Chile are introduced. 
The final climb to the lookout isn’t too long but intense and steep. The trail is a bit loose and very exposed to the wind. It just takes 30 or 45 minute walking up while being very careful with those rocks and the wind that can be strong enough to push you down to the ground as happened to us a couple of times. Our colleagues who guide at Awasi usually insist on going to do that hike the earliest the better or even during the night and see the sunrise from the top of the hike because there’s so much people on the trail that it seems a parade. Luckily, after the warning the rangers gave that day, many people must chose a different trail as it wasn’t too terrible. 
FROM 14:30 TO 17:30Descending, as always, is much faster than the ascend and 3 hours after we were at the bottom and back at the Hotel Las Torres. 
FROM 17:30 TO 19:00The shuttles back to Natales depart from Laguna Amarga at 7 pm or 7:45 pm (that was ours). Before we had to take the shuttle from the cafe/information centre/public toilet to Laguna amarga. So we waited at the front of that place for an hour and a half sitting in the concrete ground and waited for the bus to come. FROM 19:00 TO 20:15The bus came, we paid again 3.000 Chilean Pesos and got to the Portería where there wasn’t any bus from the company we had purchased the tickets from. There we waited with a bunch of Italians in our same situation, a couple of Germans and a couple from Canada that turn out to live just two hours far from our old home in Lake Louise. Finally, at about 20.15 the missing busses arrived and regardless the company ticket you had you would go on a random bus that you’d be assigned.
FROM 20:15 TO 22:30The road to Puerto Natales is uphill from the park and the way out is about 45 minutes longer than the way in. Eventually, we got to our hostel Donde Kike, our home in Puerto Natales, at about 22:45. Summarising, we spent 15 hours out to do a short 6 hours hike paying 25.000 Chilean Pesos each (would have been 14.000 pesos extra if we wouldn’t have had the Chilean ID). Despite the beauty of the Torres del Paine (sight that we already know pretty well), we found the day to be long, boring, tedious, expensive and frustrating. If you don’t mind to get in the game of the private companies that take advantage of public spaces and funds or have the patience to try to use CONAF’s facilities that only look half decent thanks to the passion of the underpaid rangers, then camping is the right way to explore the park. However, if you prefer day hikes, then renting your own vehicle is way worth the extra dollar and that’s what we did on our next visit. Enrique & Marina
