Excursión hasta el lake louise

Vamos a ver, si vivimos en Lake Louise y es un pueblo más pequeño que Villar de Argañán, ¿Cómo demonios vamos a hacer una excursión hasta Lake Louise? Pues bien, el pueblo donde vivimos se llama Lake Louise Village, que está a unos 5 km de lo que sería el Lago Louise o Lake Louise en inglés.
Para llegar hasta el lago se puede ir en coche por una carretera que serpentea siguiendo el arrollo de desagüe del lago, tardando unos diez minutos, o se puede ir caminando (o esquiando) por el bosque de abetos que separa el lago del pueblo, tardando entre 40 minutos y una hora; dependiendo de lo profunda que sea la capa de nieve y de las fotos que uno se pare a tomar.
Una vez pasado el susto inicial de los osos pardos (los famosos Grizzlies) la excursión es perfecta. ¿Qué es esto del susto de los osos? Pues bien, por lo general los osos no son agresivos y no atacan a los humanos, pero no son lo que se dice el animal más atento del mundo (no tienen depredadores naturales por lo que básicamente viven extremadamente despreocupados) así que si uno va caminando en silencio corre el riesgo de “sorprender” a uno de estos osos y, a causa del susto, el oso puede atacar. 
Es por esto que una de las normas oficiosas del parque es la de caminar haciendo el máximo ruido posible (cantando, gritando de vez en cuando, haciendo sonar una bocina periódicamente) para que los osos sepan que hay humanos por la zona y además recomiendan también llevar spray anti osos (algo así como gas pimienta para osos). 
Afortunadamente ir de excursión con Marina no es una actividad para nada silenciosa ya que, una vez empezamos a caminar, se transforma en una locutora de radio por lo que todos los animales del bosque saben dónde estamos en cada momento.El sendero, con una capa de nieve de un par de palmos, va siguiendo el riachuelo que comunica el Lake Louise con el Bow River (que cruza el pueblo de Lake Louise) atravesando un muy denso bosque de abetos. 
La nieve es muy diferente a la que tenemos en los Pirineos o en Nueva Zelanda. No moja. La puedes agarrar con las manos y se desmenuza en un polvo que parece harina pero no se funde y te empapa los guantes. El sonido de los pasos es también completamente distinto. Así como si uno va a caminar por Puigcerdá después de que nieve los pasos suenan acuosos aquí parece que estemos caminando sobre galletas María. Es un sonido seco y crujiente. 
El color también parece más blanco y puede que lo sea ya que al no ser nada húmeda no se embarra. De este modo entrar en el bosque es como entrar en una película en blanco y negro: la nieve, obviamente, es blanca, los troncos de los abetos son tan oscuros que parecen de ébano, así como sus agujas donde el contraste de su verde tremendamente apagado con el blanco de la nieve acumulada sobre ellas hace que parezcan de color azabache. 
Una vez superado el bosque llegamos al Lake Louise, donde a sus orillas se alza el famoso Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, un hotel gigante que ya se podrían haber ahorrado. El edificio es bonito y queda precioso en las postales, pero igual deberían haber hecho una ley de costas para evitar su construcción.
El Lake Louise está ya completamente congelado, siendo la capa de hielo lo suficientemente gruesa como para que los del Fairmont adecenten un trozo para hacer patinaje y mantengan un camino de un par de kilómetros sobre la superficie helada que es parte de las excursiones de la zona.
El lago es impresionante. A un extremo esta el Chateau Lake Louise y al otro está el Glaciar Victoria. A ambos lados se alzan montañas casi verticales llenas de abetos y de nieve donde se pueden apreciar perfectamente los recorridos de las constantes avalanchas.
A pesar de ser una excursión relativamente corta es físicamente cansada ya que caminar sobre nieve, sin llevar raquetas o esquíes, requiere bastante esfuerzo, especialmente subiendo. Ahora bien, bajar es muy rápido y divertido (hasta que te caes de culo, claro).

Ok, we said we live in Lake Louise which is a tiny town and now we’re climbing up to Lake Louise. How’s this possible? Well, we may have not been using the proper terminology. We should refer as Lake Louise Village to the place where we life, the township. And the actual lake with water (or ice) and all that it’s 5 km up a hill.
There’s a windy road following the little creek that the outlet of the lake forms that links both sites in about ten minutes driving. Alternatively, there’s a track along the pine forest that can be covered by foot or skiing. This last one takes between 40 minutes and 1 hour depending on the thickness of the snow cover and the time spent taking pictures. 
The trek is pleasant and enjoyable once you get over the grizzly bears paranoia (GBP). Let’s describe this made up syndrome the Canadian equivalent to the High Altitude Paranoia or HAP that we discovered (or invented) in the Annapurnas. Let’s see, in general bears aren’t aggressive and wouldn’t attack humans. However, bears don’t have natural predators and therefore they aren’t as vigilant as preys would be so they happily hang around the forest carelessly. That means that you may bump into them while they’re joyfully eating their berries and their honey and give them a fright if they didn’t hear you coming. Then, they could get angry and want to attack you poor human. 
Therefore, one of the rules to follow to stay safe in the Natural Park is to be loud and noisy when hiking in the forest (singing, giving a shout or blowing a horn every so often are good practices). This was, bears will be aware of humans around the area. Moreover, it’s also recommended to carry bear spray with you which is something like pepper spray but for bears. 
Enrique holds the opinion that I am like a radio and that when we’re in the bush I can’t shut up and all the animals know from miles away that we’re coming. But that’s not true. I sometimes have to stop talking to breath. Back to the point, the track follows the creek that channels the overflow from the Lake Louise to the Bow River (this one crosses village). It’s currently covered with about two hand lengths of snow and crosses a thick pine three forest. 
This snow here is really different from any other snow we’ve come across in the Pyrenees or New Zealand. It doesn’t get you wet. You can grab a handful but will crumble like flour, won’t melt and won’t soak your gloves. The way your steps sound is also completely different. In the Pyrenees you’ll hear your steps would sound like when walking on wet mud while here your feet make a crushing noise like walking over gravel or glass or crisps. 
Also, it seems whiter and it might actually be because it’s not wet and it doesn’t melt and for this reason it doesn’t make brown muddy patches. Therefore, when you’re inside the forest it seems you’re in a black and white film. The white is obviously from the snow and everything else resembles completely back: the trunks are so deep dark brown that look like ebony and the pine needles, when not covered in snow, contrast so much with the white snow that you’d think they’re make out of jet. 
After the forest trails you arrive to Lake Louise in which shores stands the famous and controversial Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. It is a beautiful building and looks great in the postcards, particularly the ones that show views from the sky. But the hotel is gigantic and distracts you a little bit from contemplating the nature. The Lake could de without it. 
The Lake gets completely frozen in the winter and the layer of ice is thick enough to allow to groom an outdoors skating rink and a path to get to the end of the lake walking over ice. 
The scenery is spectacular as you can guess. At one end the Chateau Lake Louise stands its geometrically while at the other the Victoria Glacier shows off its majesty. Huge and nearly vertical mountains surround the lake linking both ends. The bowl is covered with fir trees and snow and at this time of the year you can tell the course that any avalanches may have followed. 
Getting up to the Lake from the village it’s a pretty simple and short walk but physically tiring specially when not using snowshoes or cross country skis. Going up requires a fair bit of effort while going down is way faster and fun (unless you fall off on your butt).There’ll be more soon.Enrique & Marina
