El pequeño pueblo de El Chaltén, en el centro del Parque Nacional de los Glaciares, está considerado como la capital argentina del senderismo o trekking; de hecho su eslogan es “paraíso de montaña”. Se encuentra situado en las faldas del famoso Cerro Chaltén o Montaña Fitz Roy, una roca puntiaguda de 3405 m que se alza en medio del Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur (este tipo de montañas se llama nunatak).
El mismo día que fuimos a ver el Perito Moreno condujimos hacia El Chaltén (ese día hicimos casi 1100 km). Uno de los objetivos que tenía Nic era ver el Fitz Roy, que sería el equivalente a las Torres del Paine pero en Argentina.
El trayecto desde El Calafate hasta El Chaltén lo hicimos al atardecer y casi fue nuestra parte preferida del viaje. La estepa patagónica, unas llanuras que llegaban hasta donde alcanzaba la vista o hasta donde empezaba a afectar ya la curvatura terrestre, estaba muy bonita con el sol rayando el horizonte. Nic decía que se parecía mucho a Alaska en verano; habrá que ir a comprobarlo.
Llegamos a El Chaltén ya de noche pero, a pesar de no poder ver casi nada, ya podíamos intuir que era un pueblecito de montañeros.
La excursión estrella que íbamos a hacer es la denominada Laguna de los Tres por la senda Fitz Roy. Lamentablemente no tuvimos nada de suerte con la meteorología esa mañana.
Salimos de El Chaltén hacia la Laguna Capri por la senda Fitz Roy, que tiene miradores muy bonitos desde los que pudimos ver cóndores. Pasada la Laguna Capri el viento se hizo más y más fuerte hasta que cuando llegamos al Campamento Poincenot llovía de lado. Decidimos seguir por si a la altura del Cerro Chaltén o Fitz Roy el tiempo estaba un poco mejor. Pero no.
Al llegar al punto en el que comienza la ascensión (600 m de desnivel positivo en 1 km) hacia la Laguna de los Tres estábamos empapados, el viento era tan fuerte que era difícil caminar en linea recta y además había un guardaparques que nos iba diciendo a los excursionistas que nos diésemos la vuelta.
Así que, unas 6 horas después de salir, volvimos a El Chaltén donde hacía sol. Como buenos ingenieros siempre tenemos un plan B, que en este caso era subir al Mirador de los Cóndores y al Mirador de las Águilas. Dos excursiones muy sencillitas donde en principio se pueden ver cóndores y, si la meteorología acompaña, el nunatak Fitz Roy.
Y tuvimos suerte: no vimos ni un cóndor pero las nubes se fueron y pudimos ver el monte Fitz Roy o Cerro Chaltén en todo su esplendor.Esta montaña recibió el nombre Fitz Roy en honor al vicealmirante Robert Fitz Roy, comandante del HMS Beagle durante el viaje de Charles Darwin alrededor del mundo entre 1831 y 1836. Este dato es por si alguien se anima a participar en Saber y Ganar.
Actualmente el gobierno argentino está intentando volver a su denominación original, Cerro Chaltén (montaña humeante), ya que esta montaña es de una importancia inmensa en la cultura y mitología Tehuelche al estar asociada a Elal, el héroe patagónico por antonomasia, como veréis al leer el mito de esta actualización.
LOS INVENTOS DE ELAL (mito Tehuelche)
El cisne llevó a Elal hasta la tierra salvadora de La Patagonia, que en aquel momento era sólo hielo y nieve, depositándolo en la cumbre del Cerro Chaltén, la montaña Fitz Roy, donde estuvo tres días y tres noches. Los pájaros siguieron al cisne volando, los peces los siguieron por el agua y los animales terrestres fueron nadando llevándose unos a otros. Así La Patagonia se pobló de guanacos, liebres, zorros, flamencos, patos y cóndores. Cuando Elal empezó a bajar por la ladera del Chaltén salieron a su paso Kokeske, el frío, y Shíe, la nieve, que eran los dos hermanos que dominaban La Patagonia hasta la llegada de Elal, por lo que lo atacaron furiosos con la ayuda de Máip, el viento asesino. Elal los ahuyentó a todos golpeando dos piedras entre sí, inventando así el fuego. Elal inventó también el arco y las flechas, con los que agrandaba la tierra ahuyentando al mar con sus flechazos, creó las estaciones, amansó a las fieras y ordenó la vida. Un día, moldeando el barro creo a los hombres y las mujeres, los Tehuelches, a los que enseñó los secretos de la caza y del fuego, les enseñó a tratar el cuero para hacer abrigos, a reconocer las plantas comestibles… Dicen que incluso el Sol y la Luna están en el cielo porque Elal los echó de la Tierra al no querer darle su hija por esposa, y que el mar crece con la luna llena porque la chica, abandonada por Elal en el océano, quiere acercarse al cielo, desde donde la llama su madre.Enrique & MarinaEnglish version
HIKING IN EL CHALTÉN
The small town of El Chaltén, in the middle of Los Glaciares National Park, it’s considered the Trekking Capital of Argentina and a “Mountain Paradise”. The village is located at the bottom of the famous Mount Fitz Roy traditionally called Chaltén, an impressive 3405 m high pointy rock standing in the middle of the Southern Patagonic Ice field. This kind of rocky formations are called nunatak.
The same day we visited Perito Moreno we also went all the way to El Chaltén covering a total of 1.100 km. One of Nic’s visit’s goal was to see the Fitz Roy, which would be the Argentinian equivalent to the Torres del Paine.
The trip from Calafate to El Chaltén was late in the afternoon and it was one of our favourite parts of the journey. The Patagonic steppe covered as long as our sight could reach and further and the light of the low sun gave the greens and yellows a warm magic colour. Nic says it looked like Alaska in the summer. We don’t trust him, we are going to go and check it out.
It was already dark when we reached El Chaltén. We couldn’t really see very well the streets and shops but we could already feel the mountaineers’ good vibes.
Our plan for the next day was to hike to the Laguna de los Tres via the Fitz Roy track. Unfortunately our usual good luck left us and the weather was pretty bad that morning.
We left El Chaltén early and walked on the scenic Fitz Roy trail up to Laguna Capri. Past the Laguna the wind picked up and when we were at Poincenot Camp it was raining horizontally. We carried on because hope is the last thing you drop and maybe at the bottom of the hill the weather was better. But it wasn’t.
At the beginning of the ascent (600 m climb in 1 km long) to the Laguna de los Tres we were cold, wet and the wind was so strong that it was hard to walk straight. On top of that, there was a park ranger strongly advising not to go ahead. The winds would be three times worse up on the exposed slopes of the mount and, in the case of an emergency, help wouldn’t reach any further points in less than 5 hours as helicopters wouldn’t fly on those conditions.
Six hours after we left town, we were back and it was sunny and beautiful there. Luckily, we had a B plan. There’re two short walks to the Condors Lookout and the Eagles Lookout. They’re both really short hikes that start at the beginning of the village where the Parks office is. When good weather and luck are with you, you can see the aforementioned pray birds and the nunatak of El Chaltén.
The good weather came back temporarily for us to at least have a glimpse of the peak Fitz Roy which we were about to think that it was an invention, that behind the clouds there was only the nothingness. But the peak really looks impressive and the clouds around it made it even more mysterious. The name of Fitz Roy honours the vice admiral Robert Fitz Roy, commander of HMS Beagle during the trip that took Charles Darwin around the world between 1831 and 1836. The Argentinians are currently trying to reinforce the original name of el Chaltén which means smokey mountain not because it’s a volcano but because it’s frequently covered with clouds. Furthermore, the hill has great meaning for the local culture and it’s an important element associated to Elal, the Patagonic hero in the Tehuelche mythology.
ELAL’S INVENTIONS (a Tehuelche myth)
The swan brought Elal to the safe land of Patagonia which at that time it was only ice and snow. The swan left Elal on top of the hill El Chaltén, where he spent three days and three nights. The birds followed the flying swan; the fish also went after him swimming and the land animals also tag along swimming and taking one another. That was the way Patagonia received all the guanacos, hares, foxes, flamingos, ducks and condors. When Elal descended the hills of El Chaltén, Kokeske, the cold, and Shíe, the snow, intercepted him. They were the two brothers ruling the land of Patagonia until Elal’s arrival. They both, along with Máip, the killer wind, furiously attacked Elal. Elal scared them away by knocking two rocks and creating the first fire. Then he also invented the first arch and arrows. He used those to push the sea back and make the land larger. Elal made the seasons, tamed the beasts and put life in order. Then, one day, he modelled two pieces of mud into a man and a women: the very first two Tehuelches. He taught them all the secrets to be good hunters and gatherers, make fire, tan leather to make clothing and so on. It’s also said that the Sun and the Moon were banished from earth because they refused to give their daughter to marry Leal. But now, Leal has abandoned the girl in the middle of the ocean and the sea rises with every full moon because their daughter is trying to reach the sky where her mum is still calling her name.
