El comienzo de esta andadura hacia la conciencia por la moda sostenible se remonta dos años atrás cuando mi amiga Raquel , del blog Los Viajes de moda de Rachel, me animo a asistir a las jornadas de moda sostenible que organiza Slow Fashion Spain en el museo del traje (Madrid. Unas jornadas que  no están enfocadas en mostrar una y otra vez las crueldades y vergüenzas del actual fast fashion sino en exponer que vestir sostenible y realizar una moda respetuosa con el planeta es posible. Para ello echan mano de profesionales del textil, nuevos diseñadores, y multitud de propuestas y descubrimientos que te ayudan a construir poco a poco razones de peso para dar el primer paso: 

Plantearte el funcionamiento del sistema de la moda actual y preguntarte que parte de responsabilidad tenemos en el.

 ¿Que impacto ha tenido el sistema del fast fashion en mi persona?

Considero que el mayor impacto de la industria fast fashion fue en mi época adolescente. Con 16 años disfrutaba con mis amigas adquiriendo productos nuevos de las tiendas basadas en Fast Fashion, era fácil, barato y te proporcionaba esa sensación de formar parte de lo socialmente aceptado.

Sin embargo actualmente, buscamos prendas que definan más la personalidad que ya hemos forjado, que nos distingan del resto de la sociedad, queremos piezas que digan que somos únicos, y aquí es cuando el fast fashion no puede cubrir todas nuestras expectativas. Es en esa grieta cuando comencé a interesarme por otro tipo de moda.

Esto me llevo al segundo paso: buscar e informarme para realizar una compra con conciencia, añadir prendas de calidad a mi armario observando la oferta que ofrecen las marcas y diseñadores sostenibles, los diseñadores y tiendas locales, o la posibilidad de reutilizar (moda vintage) o customizar prendas. Sin embargo, esto no es tan fácil como parece, las principales dificultades a las que se  enfrenta mi todavía mente de fast fashionista son las siguientes:

• Los productos no se adaptan al estilo que busco. Me resulta complicado identificarme con las marcas, y ver si ese producto encaja conmigo. Creo que las nuevas marcas y diseñadores tienen que trabajar en romper la barrera entre la moda sostenible y el público joven, trabajando en su identidad de marca y en la comunicación con el consumidor.

• La dificultad de no encontrarlo todo en el mismo sitio, como ofrecen las webs del fast fashion o ASOS y la limitación en la cantidad y diversidad de producto.  Si bien es cierto que existen tiendas de moda sostenible multimarca como dothewoo.

• El precio elevado. El realizar prendas con un proceso sostenible y con tejido ecologicos encarece la prenda. Mi único problema es mi  preocupación en realizar una inversión en una pieza que luego no cumpla mis expectativas a nivel estético.

Así es el momento en que me encuentro actualmente en este camino hacia un consumo más responsable. Espero que estas reflexiones te hayan servido de ayuda y quien sabe quizá hasta te haya empujado a ti a comenzar tu propio camino. This adventure of moving into the fashion sustainable word starts two years ago when I went to the talks organised by Slow Fashion Spain. I remember been really surprised by the fact that the main point of the talks was not show the cruelness of fast fashion industry but give solutions and present new ways of understanding eco fashion and design. This tools makes me take the first step:
Start thinking about how fashion industry works, and how much responsibility do we have in it as customers.

So I asked my self:
How much impact Fast fashion has in my life?
I realise that when fast fashion has more impact is when you are a teenager, specialy because is the moment when been accepted is most important. I remember when I was 16, going shopping every weekend with my Friends, it was a way of feeling that you were part of something, that you were doing what people from your age were doing.
But when you grow up the feeling is completely opposite, now you know who you are, and you want to make it clear that you are unic and different from the others. Clothes should express your identity, and that’s the point when fast fashion doesn’t work. Paparajote factory
This makes me move into the second step: search and investigate about buying quality products. Buying less staff but with more aesthetic, moral and physical value for example products of local designers, second hand items, or sustainable fashion stores. Although I must say this change of habits is not an easy job and I have detected my main problems:

• The products or brands doesn’t fix with the style I’m looking for. I personally believe that new brands and even more those ones related with sustainable fashion must work on the communication with young people, try to find the way to connect with teenagers will be the key.

• The difficulty of not finding everything in the same space and the limited amount of products that sustainable brands offers.

• The high price. I completely understand that designing and producing clothes and products in a sustainable way is an expensive but worth it process, that makes the price higher. But at the same time, it makes me more worried about the quality of the clothes that I’m buying, would it satisfy my expectations? Would the textile be nice? Would it fit me?

I guess these difficulties are just part of a long processes of thinking and rethinking about our relationship with fashion and how much impact do we have as customers in a social and environmental level.
