Doc on fire
I met Enrique Gavilán ten years ago, in the early days of what was the golden age of the spanish health blogosphere. At that time he had a blog in which he described his concerns, his love for medicine and an excellent scientific rigour with a pinch of tenacity as a result of his excellent academic and methodological training. I immediately adopted him as a reference and had the privilege of having shared a day in my garden preparing the AP 12 causes project, which was one of the many we were able to do at that time.
From a distance I knew something of his difficulties but I did not imagine that his ordeal had been so profound. He shares it in his book where he opens his flesh with a virtuous narrative from which he offers us his suffering, death and professional resurrection with a prose that borders on mastery. It is an excellent text that I have no choice but to recommend to any person who is curious to learn what is resilience, the ability to get up when the waves of life roll us and make us swallow water.
In consultation I attend every week situations of vital crisis, many of them of labor cause. Burnout, harassment and professional mistreatment are usual. But what happens when the health professional himself is burned? If you read the book you will find a well-earned answer from a heavyweight of the profession who emphasizes that when live cards are bad, all the knowledge and erudition in the world is of little use.
If you have the opportunity to attend one of the book presentations you will surely find it interesting to meet the author firsthand and listen to his message. If society mistreats its most selfless professionals we will be doing something important wrong, whoever hurts the hand that cares for him will not find it when he needs it.
