Martes Musicales: I am not my hair

Hoy viene a los martes musicales India.Arie, una compositora, cantautora y guitarrista, representante del movimiento neo-soul. Tiene canciones muy bonitas, sobre todo en su álbum de debut, que es el que más escucho, Acoustic Soul, de 2001. Pero hoy quiero centrarme en una de sus canciones, I am not my hair.

En I am not my hair, India.Arie explica un poco de su hair journey, y después viene a decir que no importa cómo luzcamos nuestro cabello, no importa nuestra piel; lo que importa es nuestra alma, y la persona que somos por dentro. Hoy quiero compartir esta canción porque me habéis oído decirlo algunas veces: “mi cabello no me define”. Pero quiero añadir que , ojo, eso no quiere decir que no deba cuidarlo. Así que podemos llevar nuestro pelo alisado, y si está bien si es una opción personal, no porque crea que con mi pelo afro no puedo hacer nada más; y quiero hacer hincapié en este punto, para que se entienda que no estoy en contra de las mujeres que se alisan el cabello -por lo visto a veces lo parece, y no es así-. De lo que estoy en contra es de los productos desrizantes, de la química, de las heridas que me hicieron en el cuero cabelludo; pero cada uno toma sus decisiones, y no soy yo nadie para juzgar a los demás.

Podemos llevar el cabello natural, y no seremos menos profesionales por ello; o podemos llevar nuestro pelo rapado al cero. Todo eso estará bien, porque lo que nos define es cómo somos, no como llevamos nuestro cabello. Lo que nos define es la persona que somos, independientemente de cómo llevemos el cabello.
