Buenos dias a todos/as: No, no me he olvidado de esta seccion original del blog, el dia de hoy os traigo la entrevista con un autor,que cuando le conoci,me llamaron mucho las portadas de sus libros,el cual tengo para leer en ebook,pero queria conocerle un poco mas y que vosotros/as tuvieseis una vision como siempre de quien se esconde detras de los libros...me ha encantado esta entrevista la sinceridad del autor,pero sobre todo,su manera de pensar,espero que os guste

Después de años de escribir obras de teatro, haciendo alguna actuación y cantando, se graduó con honores en la Universidad de Nueva York, pasando de un pequeño apartamento en esta ciudad, por fin ha encontrado su lugar. Autor. Por primera vez en mi nuevo papel: el libro UNNATURAL, el primero de  Archangel Academy series

Thanks for give me the opportunity for this interview,for begin to know about your books-Would you say if its possible that "Unnatural"...will be publish in Spain?

I really hope that UNNATURAL and the entire Archangel Academy series will be published in Spain – and in other parts of the world outside of the United States as well. Unfortunately, those decisions are made by my publisher – if they find that Spanish readers are interested in reading UNNATURAL in their native language then yes they would publish it. So spread the word and tell everyone to e-mail Kensington Publishing or visit my website, MichaelGriffo.com, in order to become a fan of the UNNATURAL facebook page and maybe we can make this happen! I would love it actually since I minored in Spanish in college and will often pick up books and magazines to brush up on the language. Leí españoles, pero apenas a un poco! -For Spanish readers, would you tell us that how did you come the idea from "Unnatural"(a dream)?Can you tell us a little about it in your own words?

Where did I get the inspiration for UNNATURAL? That question isn’t as easy to answer as you would think. I wanted to write a young adult novel that had a gay teenage boy in the lead because I think this is something that is missing from the literary landscape. I know that when I was growing up there were very, very few novels that even touched upon a kid being gay so that was important for me. I’ve also always been fascinated with vampires and the supernatural – like most people – so I guess one day my two different thoughts merged and I got the idea to write a novel about a gay kid who comes to terms with his own homosexuality against the backdrop of vampires and the supernatural. From there everything really just took off. All the little bits, all the other characters and plots, the different types of supernatural elements, they really just came to me either in a daydream while I was riding the bus to work or in a dream at night. It’s so hard to pin these things down, inspiration is so hard to really define. But I’m so glad that I was inspired and dreamed of the story because it’s been such a pleasure to write

- How to get published "Unnatural"? Hiring a literary agent? "won you a contest? Have you sent directly to a publisher? Tell us your story ...

Here in the United States, the only real way to get a publisher to read your novel is if you have a literary agent. Of course if you’re famous or a reality TV star things might be a bit different, but for a regular writer like me I had to find a literary agent first. I went about it the usual way, I found a listing of agents online and was very lucky that one expressed a great deal of interest in my story. From there, he submitted UNNATURAL to Kensington, they loved the idea of doing a sort of “gay Twilight” and the rest, as they say, is history. From what I’ve heard my process was a bit quicker than usual and I really think it’s because it was all meant to be – my agent had a great connection with a publisher who publishes young adult novels, my editor was looking for something new and different, and UNNATURAL fit the bill for them. I’m really happy about the way it worked out.

-Would you say what are your immediate projects?

At the moment I’m finishing the third book – UNAFRAID – and I should be done with that in another month. After that I need to take a break from writing, just for a bit, because I wrote the three books in quick succession and I also have a full-time job so I’m a bit tired! It’s all good, I just need to take the summer off, soak up the sun, and get the creative juices flowing again.I do know that I want to continue writing in the young adult genre – I really like writing for younger readers because I find that they are a great audience. They are more willing to join the characters and go on a fantastical journey and they are less jaded – I don’t know if that word translates very well, but they’re less cynical. They’re more open to new ideas and as a writer I find that really refreshing. I have a few story ideas that I have to pitch to my editor and one of them deals with a young girl and reincarnation – having lived a previous life. I’m excited by it so hopefully my editor will be too!

-What means for Michael Griffo write?

If I understand this question, writing, for me, is a way to communicate the thoughts and feelings that are in my heart and head. I have spent some time as an actor, but I wasn’t very successful and I think it’s because it wasn’t the right form of creative expression for me. The joy that I feel after completing a book, a chapter, or even a paragraph is intense and I never really experienced anything like that while I was performing. I was always nervous, always thinking I wasn’t doing a very good job. That’s not the case with my writing. I know that I have a way to go to become a great writer and I think my writing improves from book to book, but when I’m finished writing something I’m filled with a sense of pride and contentment. I can’t wait for people to read my words, be moved by them, and be transported to another place and time. I can say with all certainty that I will be writing – in some way, shape, or form – for the rest of my life!

-I read in your bio that you wrote plays,Can we get one of your plays?

Of course you can. One of my favorite plays is the first play I ever wrote – it’s called NO MORE SUNDAYS – and deals with two generations of Italian women who bring their matriarch home to die. The phrase ‘no more Sundays’ refers to the end of their Sunday family dinners. I think Spanish readers would actually enjoy it because it deals with family – the good and the bad – and Spain, like Italy honors and treasures its family. The play does take place in America, New Jersey to be exact, but it’s very Italian and family-oriented and I think they’d enjoy. I’ve attached it here for you to review.In addition, I have a short fifteen-minute play, CLOUDY, which is licensed at Playscripts.com, but I’ve attached it here as well along with another short play, 5G/10B. Both of these plays are a darker than NO MORE SUNDAYS, but I’m very proud of them because of its interesting word play and the way I tried to combine fantasy and reality.

-What is the sentence or paragraph that would you disllike delete, by any requirement in the last minute, in your book?

There’s really nothing specific that I can think of that I’d like to delete from UNNATURAL. I love all of the characters and the individual journeys that they go on. I’m sure that there are some sentences that could be fixed a bit, maybe strengthened, but overall I’m proud of the book the way it stands so honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing.

-How to fight writer's block?

Whenever this happens to me, I stop writing! I usually go off and do something physical, whether it’s clean my apartment, wash the dishes, or go for a bike ride, something that makes me use my body instead of my mind as a way to clear it out. I’ve been very, very lucky and haven’t had too many bouts with writer’s block as I’ve written this series and I think that’s because before I start writing I have a very detailed outline from which I work. That means I don’t wake up and stare at a blank computer screen and have to figure out what I want to write, I already know what I want to write because my outline is right next to me. My outline is sort of like a blueprint to the chapter, I know exactly how the chapter is going to begin and end and the important beats and points that I have to highlight in the middle so there isn’t that much time for my mind to get scared and think that I won’t know what to say. I don’t think I could write any other way.

-Would you like to add more to this interview or give a message for spanish fans?

I would just like to say how happy I am – and really stunned – that UNNATURAL caught your attention all the way over there in Spain! I think it’s amazing. I think Michael Howard – the main character in the book – is someone that all readers, young and old, American and Spanish can relate to so I’m glad that you’re introducing them to him. I would also love the opportunity to hear from your readers as well and find out how they relate to Michael, Ronan, and the other characters and the story as a whole, so they can visit the fanpage and let me know what they think. Gracias por darme la oportunidad de esta entrevista, para empezar a conocer información sobre sus libros-Nos podrias decir si"Unnatural" ... se publicará en España?

Realmente espero que Unnatural y toda la serie de Arcangel Academy se publicará en España - y en otras partes del mundo fuera de los Estados Unidos. Por desgracia, las decisiones son tomadas por mi editor - si ellos encuentran que los lectores españoles están interesados ​​en la lectura , entonces sí que lo publicaría. -Para los lectores españoles, ¿podría decirnos  cómo se le ocurrió la idea de "Unnatural" (un sueño...) ¿Puedes contarnos un poco acerca de ello con sus propias palabras?

¿De dónde saqué la inspiración para Unnatural? Esa pregunta no es tan fácil de responder como se podría pensar. Yo quería escribir una novela para jovenes adultos,que tuviese un adolescente gay  porque creo que esto es algo que no aparece en el panorama literario. Sé que cuando yo era niño había novelas , pero muy pocas que incluso tocasen el tema de  "un chico es gay", así que fue importante para mí. También he estado siempre fascinado con los vampiros y lo sobrenatural - como la mayoría de la gente - así que supongo que un día mis dos pensamientos diferentes se fusionaron y se me ocurrió escribir una novela sobre un chico gay que llega a un acuerdo con su propia homosexualidad en contra del telón de fondo de los vampiros y lo sobrenatural. A partir de ahí todo  realmente despegó. Todas las pequeñas piezas, todos los demás personajes y tramas, los diferentes tipos de elementos sobrenaturales, que en realidad sólo vinieron  hacia mí, ya sea en un sueño mientras yo estaba en el autobús al trabajo o en un sueño por la noche. Es tan difícil de precisar estas cosas, la inspiración es tan difícil de definir realmente. Pero estoy tan contento de que me inspirase y soñé con la historia porque ha sido un placer escribir

- ¿Cómo se publico "Unnatural"? contrato  un agente literario? ¿Ganó un concurso? ¿Ha enviado directamente a un editor? Cuéntanos tu historia ...

Aquí en los Estados Unidos, la única manera real de conseguir un editor para leer tu novela es si tienes un agente literario. Por supuesto, si eres famoso o una estrella de televisión real las cosas pueden ser un poco diferentes, pero para que un escritor regular como yo, tenía que encontrar un agente literario en primer lugar. Lo hice de la forma habitual, me encontré con una lista de agentes en línea y tuve mucha suerte de que uno expresase un gran interés en mi historia. A partir de ahí, se sometió "Unnatural" a Kensington, les encantaba la idea de hacer una especie de "gay Twilight" y el resto, como dicen, es historia. Por lo que he oído en mi proceso fue un poco más rápido de lo normal y realmente creo que es porque todo estaba destinado a ser - que mi agente tenía una gran conexión con una editorial que publica las novelas de adultos jóvenes, mi editor estaba buscando algo nuevo y diferente, y Unnatural fue adecuadas para ellos. Estoy muy contento por la forma en que salió.

-Nos diria cuáles son sus proyectos más inmediatos?

En este momento estoy terminando el tercer libro - Unafraid - y se debe hacer  en un mes más. Después me tengo que tomar un descanso en la escritura, sólo un poco, porque escribir los tres libros en rápida sucesión, también tengo un trabajo a tiempo completo por lo que estoy un poco cansado! Está todo bien, sólo tengo que tener el verano libre, tomar el sol, y que los jugos creativos fluyan de nuevo.Yo sé que quiero seguir escribiendo en el género joven adulto- me gusta mucho escribir para los lectores más jóvenes porque me parece que son un gran público. Están más dispuestos a unirse a los personajes e ir en un viaje fantástico y son más receptivos - No sé si esa palabra se traduce muy bien, pero son menos cínicos. Están más abiertos a nuevas ideas y como escritor me parece que realmente refrescante.Tengo unas pocas ideas para  historias  que he  pasado a mi editor y uno de ellas se refiere a una niña y la reencarnación - de haber vivido una vida anterior. Estoy emocionado con ella, así que espero que mi editor no me haga esperar demiasiado¡¡

-¿Que significa para Michael Griffo escribir?

Si he entendido bien la pregunta, por escrito, para mí, es una forma de comunicar los pensamientos y sentimientos que están en mi corazón y la cabeza. He pasado algún tiempo como actor, pero no tuve mucho éxito y creo que es porque no era la forma correcta de  expresión creativa para mí. La alegría que siento después de terminar un libro, un capítulo, o incluso un párrafo es intensa y yo nunca he experimentado algo así  mientras yo estaba actuando. Yo estaba siempre nervioso, siempre pensando que no estaba haciendo un trabajo muy bueno. Ese no es el caso de mi escritura. Sé que tengo mucho camino por recorrer para convertirme en un gran escritor y creo que mi escritura mejora de libro en libro, pero cuando he terminado de escribir algo que me llena de un sentimiento de orgullo y satisfacción. No puedo esperar para que la gente lea mis palabras, sean movido por ellas, y sean transportados a otro lugar y tiempo. Puedo decir con toda certeza que voy a escribir - de alguna manera, forma - para el resto de mi vida!

-He leído en su biografía que escribió obras de teatro, ¿Se puede conseguir una de sus obras?

Por supuesto que puede. Uno de mis obras favoritas es la primera obra de teatro que he escrito - que se llama NO MORE SUNDAYS - y se ocupa de dos generaciones de mujeres italianas que llevan a sus casa a  la matriarca para morir. La frase "NO MORE SUNDAYS" se refiere al final de sus comidas en familia el domingo. Creo que los lectores españoles realmente disfrutarian de ella porque se trata de la familia - el bien y el mal - y España, al igual que Italia honran los tesoros de su familia. La obra se lleva a cabo en los Estados Unidos, New Jersey, para ser exactos, pero es muy italiano y orientado a la familia y creo que disfrutaría. Lo he unido aquí para que los revise.Además, tengo un corto de quince minutos el juego, CLOUDY, que es licenciado en Playscripts.com, pero lo he conectado también aquí junto con otra obra de teatro corta, 5G/10B. Ambas obras son una más oscura que NO MORE SUNDAYS, pero estoy muy orgulloso de ellos por su juego de palabras interesantes y la forma en que trató de combinar la fantasía y la realidad.

-Cuál es la frase o párrafo que usted no le gusto eliminar, por cualquier requerimiento en el último minuto, en su libro?

Realmente no hay nada específico que se me ocurra que me gustaría borrar de Unnatural. Los amo a todos los personajes y los viajes individuales de seguir adelante. Estoy seguro de que hay algunas frases que podrían fijarse un poco, tal vez fortalecido, pero en general estoy orgulloso de el libro la forma en que se encuentra de manera honesta, yo no cambiaría nada.

-Cómo lucha contra el bloqueo del escritor?

Cada vez que esto  me sucede, dejo de escribir! Por lo general salgo y hago algo físico, si se trata de limpiar mi casa, lavar los platos, o dar un paseo en bicicleta, algo que me haga uso de mi cuerpo, en lugar de mi mente como una forma de sacarlo. He sido muy, muy afortunado y no he tenido demasiadas peleas con el bloqueo del escritor, como he escrito esta serie y creo que es porque antes de empezar a escribir tengo un esquema muy detallado de lo que  trabajo. Eso significa que no se despierta y mirando a una pantalla de ordenador en blanco y tiene que averiguar lo que quiero escribir, ya sé lo que quiero escribir, porque mi perfil es justo a mi lado. Mi esquema es algo así como un plan para el capítulo, sé exactamente cómo el capítulo va a comenzar y terminar y los ritmos importantes y los puntos que tengo que destacar en el medio así que no hay tanto tiempo para mi mente se asustan y piensan que no voy a saber qué decir. No creo que yo podría escribir de otra manera.

-¿Te gustaría añadir más a esta entrevista, o dar un mensaje para los fans españoles?

Me gustaría decir lo feliz que estoy - y sorprendió realmente - que UNNATURAL llame la atención todo el camino hay en España! Creo que es increíble. Creo que Michael Howard - el personaje principal del libro - es alguien que todos los lectores, jóvenes y viejos, americanos y españoles pueden relacionarse con lo que estoy contento de que usted los está introduciendo en él. También me encantaría tener la oportunidad de escuchar a sus lectores y así conocer cómo se relacionan con Michael Ronan, y los otros personajes y la historia en su conjunto, por lo que se puede visitar la página de fans y quiero saber lo que piensan.¡Muchas gracias!
