He aquí un álbum que me ha dejado absolutamente inmerso en su universo. «Seraphim» es el quinto lanzamiento, y el álbum más ambicioso hasta la fecha, del proyecto solista de Blake Lamoureux (Ophidian Memory), originario de Des Moines, Iowa. Este no es un simple ejercicio de melodic death metal; es una base sonora sobre la cual se injertan y evolucionan sin cesar el black metal, el thrash, el metalcore e, importantemente, el progressive metal.

Blake nos presenta una narrativa conceptual que define todo el proyecto: un épico de fantasía oscura ambientado en el universo ficticio de «Existence», donde seres de luz y oscuridad libran una guerra constante por la aniquilación de la humanidad. «Seraphim» actúa como la secuela narrativa directa de «Our Shattered Garden», y se siente como un clímax sonoro, expandiendo la identidad de Ophidian Memory en cada aspecto de su sonido. «Resurrected Primordials» y «Cenotaph» ofrecen la vertiente más melódica y thrashy del proyecto, con riffs divertidos y secciones limpias muy pegadizas. Es en el primer tercio donde el álbum se siente más directo, pero pronto se vuelve más complejo. «Conceiving Dreams to Quell our Ruin» es lo que Blake jocosamente llama «progressive blackened metalcore», y encuentro que es una de las piezas más singulares del disco, mostrando una fluidez musical que se adapta a la compleja narrativa de la procreación del Nephilim.

Lamoureux se encarga de todos los instrumentos y la programación de la batería, y la producción, realizada y mezclada por él mismo (y masterizada por Rick Stallkamp), logra un sonido potente y pulido que honra la complejidad de los arreglos.

La composición se eleva con «You/I/Us», una canción dividida en tres partes que me lleva progresivamente de la melodía ambiental a un caos groovy y completamente desquiciado. Esta pista explora la complejidad de las relaciones rotas y formadas durante la guerra. Un punto álgido que debo destacar es «Cenotaph», que cuenta con la participación de Jacob Dieffenbach. Su contribución es significativa, marcando su primer debut musical desde «The Work» de «Rivers of Nihil», y la canción se beneficia enormemente de su impacto, sirviendo como un paquete condensado de la esencia de Ophidian Memory.

Finalmente, el álbum cierra con «Syzygy», que actúa como el espejo conclusivo de «Charred Chasm». Es una odisea musical espectacular donde el Tyrant Aekyr maldice a sus creaciones e invoca a su Leviatán. Líricamente, el álbum trata sobre la guerra, la traición y el horror, pero Lamoureux ha puesto el mismo énfasis en la esperanza, el establecimiento de objetivos comunes y la lucha hasta el último aliento.

Blake presents us with a conceptual narrative that defines the entire project: a dark fantasy epic set in the fictional universe of «Existence,» where beings of light and darkness wage a constant war for the annihilation of humanity. «Seraphim» acts as the direct narrative sequel to «Our Shattered Garden», and it feels like a sonic climax, expanding the identity of Ophidian Memory in every aspect of its sound. The band’s promise is fulfilled in five words: Melodic, Intense, Progressive, Emotional, Expansive.

This album is an odyssey that requires being digested from start to finish, and musically, it has shown me that Blake Lamoureux knows exactly how to manipulate the atmosphere to serve the story.

Lyrically, it establishes the conflict of Xathanas and the beginning of the end, a fundamental piece that anchors the album.

«Resurrected Primordials» and «Cenotaph» offer the most melodic and thrashy side of the project, with fun riffs and very catchy clean sections. It is in the first third where the album feels more direct, but it soon becomes more complex. «Conceiving Dreams to Quell our Ruin» is what Blake jokingly calls «progressive blackened metalcore», and I find it to be one of the most unique pieces on the record, showcasing a musical fluidity that adapts to the complex narrative of the procreation of the Nephilim.

Lamoureux handles all instruments and drum programming, and the production, performed and mixed by himself (and mastered by Rick Stallkamp), achieves a powerful and polished sound that honors the complexity of the arrangements.

As it progresses, «Seraphim» is not afraid to hit the intensity accelerator. «Bleeding Darkness Bound by Fire» is the most intense and shortest track on the record, serving as a direct hammer blow to consolidate the formation of the Dark Triumvirate of seraphim. The album has managed to maintain the heaviness of «Carrion Lord» while injecting the cleanliness and ambience of «Our Shattered Garden», creating a sublime balance.

The composition elevates with «You/I/Us», a song divided into three parts that progressively leads me from ambient melody to a groovy and completely unhinged chaos. This track explores the complexity of broken and formed relationships during the war. A high point I must highlight is «Cenotaph», which features the collaboration of Jacob Dieffenbach. His contribution is significant, marking his first musical debut since «The Work» by Rivers of Nihil, and the song greatly benefits from his impact, serving as a condensed package of the essence of Ophidian Memory.

Finally, the album closes with «Syzygy», which acts as the conclusive mirror to «Charred Chasm». It is a spectacular musical odyssey where the Tyrant Aekyr curses his creations and invokes his Leviathan. Lyrically, the album deals with war, betrayal, and horror, but Lamoureux has placed the same emphasis on hope, the establishment of common goals, and the fight to the last breath.
