Paseos por la reserva awasi

El lodge AWASI Patagonia ha creado una reserva natural de pumas, en el centro de la cual se encuentran los edificios del hotel: un edificio principal, 14 villas y el campamento de los empleados.
El esquema de trabajo que se sigue es propio de un barco, se trabajan 11 días seguidos y se descansan 4. El hotel pone a disposición de los empleados transporte constante a Puerto Natales, pero no siempre hay ganas de irse 4 días a “la ciudad”. En este primer rol (secuencia de 4 días) que tuvimos nos quedamos todos en la reserva AWASI.
Marina aquí está de jefa así que no se ha podido tomar estos días de descanso, por eso no saldrá en muchas fotos, pero ya vendrá una vez la temporada esté en marcha.
Lo que hemos hecho el grupo de amiguetes ha sido ir a caminar. Hemos ido hasta la Estancia, que serían los edificios de la explotación ganadera. Entre ir y volver y dependiendo del camino que tomes se pueden caminar alrededor de 5 horas.
Por el camino hemos visto caballos baguales, infinidad de guanacos, cóndores, águilas, ñandúes, zorros y liebres. Y siempre, las Torres del Paine al fondo.
Otra de las excursiones que hemos hecho ha sido hasta el Salto de las Chinas, que es una pequeña catarata en el río Las Chinas. Caminamos casi 7 horas y no lo encontramos, pero nos gustó la excursión. 

Salimos de AWASI y fuimos hasta “El Puesto” que era la casa del leonero, el gaucho encargado de matar pumas porque ellos matan a las ovejas. Desde “El Puesto” hay que caminar siguiendo los caminitos de guanacos hasta la Estancia de Santa Gemita, que lleva años abandonada. Todo este camino es un cementerio de guanacos, el alimento principal de los pumas. Hay casi tantos esqueletos de guanacos como animales vivos.
Pero la excursión de cabecera de aquí es la ascensión a Sierra Contreras. Es fácil y corta y se atraviesan cinco bosques de lengas, los árboles de la zona. Hemos ido ya varias veces ya que desde la falsa cima se ven las Torres del Paine y toda la pampa que nos rodea. El pequeño problema es el viento, que es tan fuerte que te tira al suelo.DOMO Y LITUCHE (mito Mapuche)En el principio de los tiempos sólo existía un espíritu, Ngenechén, que habitaba en el cielo. Un día que estaba aburrido decidió crear al hombre, al que llamó “hijo” por lo mucho que lo quería. Estaba tan contento con su creación que lo envió a la Tierra, pero no controló su entusiasmo y lo lanzó demasiado fuerte por lo que el hombre se golpeó al caer. La Madre, preocupada, decidió abrir una ventana en el cielo para verlo; esa ventana es Kuyén, la Luna, que desde entonces vigila el sueño de los hombres. El Padre tenía curiosidad por ver al hombre en la Tierra, por lo que abrió otra ventana en el cielo, Antú, el Sol, que alienta la vida y calienta cada día. Ngenechén vio que el hombre estaba muy solo, por lo que creó a la mujer, a la que esta vez depositó suavemente en la Tierra. La mujer empezó a caminar y con cada paso que daba crecían hierba y árboles y de su canto nacieron mariposas y animales. El primer hombre, Lituche, y la primera mujer, Domo, se encontraron, se enamoraron y construyeron su primer hogar, Ruka. Los hijos de Domo y Lituche se multiplicaron, ocupando el territorio de la cordillera de los Andes. En un momento dado hubo un gran cataclismo y las aguas del océano empezaron a subir guiadas por la serpiente Kai Kai. Para escapar del agua la cordillera de los Andes se hizo más y más alta, guiada por la culebra Tren Tren. Una vez las aguas se calmaron y volvieron a su nivel habitual los hombres y mujeres supervivientes bajaron de la cordillera a la Pampa, las llanuras. Desde entonces se les conoce como Hombres de la Tierra o Mapuches.

The Relais & Chateaux AWASI Patagonia has created a puma (cougar) natural reserve, where the hotel buildings are basically located in the center.
We started working in mid September and we got our first days off just at the beginning of October, but instead of going to Puerto Natales, the closest village, we decided to stay in the reserve and explore the area.
Marina is the new Restaurant boss so she couldn’t take those days off. This is why she won’t appear un many pictures. But don’t worry, once the season is up and running she will be back in the blog.
Basically what the AWASI group of friends have done is going for walks. We’ve gone to the Estancia (the Ranch house), that takes about 5 hours return.
Along the way we’ve seen bagual horses (wild horses), guanacos (dead and alive), condors, eagles, ñandúes, foxes and hares. And witnessing all of it like sentinels, the Torres del Paine.
Another hike was the Salto las Chinas, that is a little waterfall on the river Las Chinas. We hiked for almost 7 hours and we didn’t find it. But we liked the outing.

We left AWASI and walked to the “Puesto”, where the leonero or cougar hunter used to live. From there we walked following guanaco trails towards the Estancia de Santa Gemita, that has been abandoned for years. All this hike is through a guanaco cemetery, or a cougar food bowl.
But the star hike here is the ascent to Sierra Contreras. It’s reasonably easy and short and you go thorugh 5 lenga forests on the way up. We’ve climbed to the false summit a few times already, the best lookout to see the Torres del Paine and all the pampa, plains, that surrounds them.DOMO AND LITUCHE (Mapuche myth)At the beginning of time there was only one spirit, Ngenechén, that lived in the sky. One day he was bored so he decided to create a man, and he called it “son” because he loved it very much. He was so happy with his creation that he sent it to Earth, but he was too excited and he threw him too vigorously so the man hit the ground quite hard. The Mother, worried, decided to open a window in the sky to keep an eye on the man; this window is Kuyén, the Moon, that takes care of the men’s dreams. The Father felt very curious about the whereabouts of the men in earth, so he opened another window, called Antú, the Sun, that gives life and warms the soul. Ngenechén saw that the man was too lonely, so he created the woman; this time he placed her carefully on Earth. The woman started walking and with every step she took, life was born. The furst man, Lituche, and the first woman, Domo, met and fell in love. The children of Domo and Lituche had children and multiplied, occupying the Andes Range. There was then a cataclysm and the ocean waters started to rise following the evil snake Kai Kai. To escape from the rising waters the Andes started to grow higher and higher, guided by the good snake Tren Tren. Once the waters stayed calm and went back to their original height, the men and women that had survived descended the Andes to the Pampa, the plains.
