SENDERISMO EN BANFF: CASCADE MOUNTAIN (2998 m)

Cascade Mountain es la montaña que aparece siempre en las fotos que la gente hace desde Banff Avenue como si fuese un enorme muro de piedra que delimita el pueblo de Banff. Es, junto al Mount Rundle (2948 m) que ya escalamos hace unas semanas, la montaña más famosa de la zona.
Marina, Nyvonn y yo decidimos subir hasta la cima de Cascade (18 km entre ida y vuelta con una ganancia de altitud de 1595 m) en un día perfecto: el viento justo había cambiado la noche anterior llevándose el humo de los incendios hacia el sur. 

Ahora, el día después de la excursión, mientras escribo el blog el viento ha vuelto a cambiar y el humo es tan denso en Lake Louise que el sol es rojo y casi no se ven los árboles que están a escasos 50 m de nuestra casa. Menuda suerte tuvimos.

La excursión empieza en la estación de esquí de Norquay, que en verano está un poco desangelada, descendiendo hacia el Forty Mile Creek. 

Una vez cruzado el riachuelo el camino ya empieza a subir por el bosque haciendo las típicas eses a las que ya estamos acostumbrados. 

Después de casi dos horas caminando por el bosque se llega a un claro en el que se puede ver el anfiteatro creado por Cascade Mountain. Una vez allí empieza la escalada típica de las rocosas.

Se puede ver la cima perfectamente y también se puede ver como el camino se alarga y rodea las dos “falsas cimas” que hay a las que también se puede subir. De hecho nosotros subimos a ambas en la ascensión y nos las saltamos en el descenso.

El camino avanza entre la cresta de la montaña y la ladera de rocas sueltas. Es un sendero bien marcado con rocas apiladas por otros excursionistas e incluso hay puntos en los que alguien pintó señales de color fucsia que se ven desde muy lejos.

Una vez pasadas ambas falsas cimas se llega al último trozo de cresta, que recuerda enormemente a la “Dragon’s Back” de Rundle, que está muy empinada y resbaladiza debido a la infinidad de rocas sueltas por las que hay que avanzar.


Después de casi 5 horas de ascenso conseguimos llegar a la cima. Es la típica cima de las rocosas que parece sacada del dibujo de un niño pequeño; es un pico de rocas puntiagudas en el que hay el sitio justo para que tres personas se sienten a comer el bocadillo.

Desde ahí arriba pudimos ver el Lake Minnewanka, un trozo enorme de la autopista transcanadiense, Banff, Mount Rundle y alguna que otra columna de humo de los incendios de la zona.

Una vez comido el bocadillo y hechas las fotos de rigor volvimos al coche y nos fuimos directos a las Banff Upper Hotsprings, que son las aguas termales alrededor de las cuales creció el pueblo, y posteriormente el Parque Nacional, de Banff.

Cascade Mountain is that mountain that you always see in the pictures that people takes of Banff avenue. It really looks like a wall that limits the town of Banff. Besides Mount Rundle (2948 m, and already climbed) one of the the most popular scrambles in the area. 
Nyvonn, Enrique and I had been looking for the perfect day to make this summit. The trail is 18 km long and has an altitude gain of 1595 m, so the chosen date had to make the effort worth. Our pick was perfect: the wind had changed overnight taken most of the smoke to the south, the sun was shinning and the temperature was mild. 

The day after the hike, while writing this text, the wind has changed again and the smoke is so think in Lake Louise that we can look at the sun, which looks red, and we can’t even seen the trees growing 50 meters far from our window. It really was a lucky gap. 

The trail head is located at the end of Norquay ski station which in the summer has a pretty sad and depressing look. Look for the start descending towards Forty Mile Creek. 

After crossing the creek the trail starts switchbacking up the forest. 

After about two hours walking on easy not technical terrain we got to a clearance that gave us great view of the amphitheatre at the back of Cascade Mountain. From this point onwards the trail turns more technical and exposed. 

You can see the real summit at all times and also the trail turning around the two false summits that you will also climb. Actually, we reached this two peaks on the way up but skipped them on the way down taking a slightly different route. 

Track runs over the ridge and the scramble slope at a times. It’s really well marked and there’re plenty of cairns left by previous hikers and some bright pink square marks painted on the rocks of some corners. 

After the two false summits you get to the last stretch of the ridge, which suspiciously reminded us of the neighbouring “Dragon’s Back” of Rundle. That means it was really steep, slippery and covered with loose rocks. 


It took us almost 5 hours to reach the summit. It was one of those peaks that little kids draw: perfectly triangular shape and a skinny tip where only three people can sit to eat their well deserved sandwich. Lucky we are only three in this crew. 

From the top you can see Lake Minnewanka, the Transcanadian highway, the town of Banff, Mount Rundle and a few smoke columns sneaking up. 

After the sandwich and the pictures, we walked back to the car and went straight to Banff brewery to eat a proper meal. Then we went for a dip at the Banff Upper Hot springs. These are the first attraction that triggered tourism in Banff back in the 1930’s and are the highest thermal mineral springs in Canada. We felt super good after the soak. Enrique & Marina
