SENDERISMO EN CASTLE MOUNTAIN: HELENA PEAK 2835 m

Esta semana hemos tenido unos días muy movidos debido a los incendios que están afectando a los bosques alrededor del Parque Nacional de Banff. Había tantos y tan repartidos que hemos estado  casi tres días con una calidad del aire de nivel 8, considerado de alto riesgo para la salud (10 es el nivel máximo), lo que significa que había tanto humo que no se veían las montañas. Afortunadamente el aire cambió de dirección y empezó a mover el humo hacia el sur (en Calgary tenían ceniza por todas partes) por lo que la visibilidad mejoró, así que nos fuimos de excursión.

Como había aviso de tormenta para la tarde decidimos salir bien pronto e ir cerca de Lake Louise, concretamente a la zona de la Castle Mountain. Es una montaña muy famosa y muy bonita porque se asemeja al mundialmente famoso Castillo de Peñafiel.

Empezamos a caminar en dirección al Rockbound Lake con la intención de decidir qué hacer en función del tiempo una vez llegásemos a él. 

El camino comenzó con un aviso sobre los osos: ha empezado la temporada de bayas y frutas silvestres, que crecen a los lados del camino, por lo que la probabilidad de encontrarse con ellos ha aumentado considerablemente. Ya pueden prepararse.

Avanzamos por un camino razonablemente ancho que atraviesa un bosque inmenso de abetos. A medida que avanzamos nos fuimos encontrando con caca en medio del camino. ¿Era de oso? ¿Igual era de caballo? No la probamos así que no sabemos, pero no vimos a ningún caballo.

Pasadas un par de horas llegamos al Rockbound Lake, que es muy bonito, desde el que tuvimos unas vistas impresionantes de la parte trasera de Castle Mountain y del anfiteatro que une los picos de Stuart Knob y Helena.
Estuvimos mirando distancias y altitudes en el mapa y vimos que Stuart Knob estaba realmente lejos comparado con Helena Peak, que además era bastante más alto. De hecho, prestamos más atención y vimos que el Helena Peak es la montaña más alta de la zona. 


Éramos incapaces de ver por dónde subir hasta la cima de Helena Peak, pero en el GPS había marcado un recorrido así que fuimos siguiéndolo. 


Y realmente se podía subir, un poco al estilo de la Tower of Babel, así que fuimos haciendo el ya clásico “scramble” hasta llegar a la cima.

Desde el punto más alto de Helena Peak pudimos disfrutar de unas vistas de 360 grados de toda la zona. Pudimos ver el humo que había en la zona de Banff al sur, la tormenta que venía por el oeste y la inmensidad de montañas que rodeaban todo el area.

Allí arriba nos tomamos un bocadillo, hicimos las fotos de rigor e incluso encontramos un pequeño monumento hecho con piedras apiladas donde había una caja metálica con las cenizas de un matrimonio que había fallecido años atrás.

Cuando el cielo se oscureció y escuchamos los primeros truenos empezamos a bajar hacia el lago, no sin resbalarnos unas cuantas veces cada uno.La lluvia nos pilló en el bosque por lo que estuvimos medianamente protegidos. No sabemos cómo acabaría un chico que nos cruzamos a la altura del lago y que tenía pensado subir corriendo a Helena Peak, igual lo frió un rayo.

This last few weeks haven’t been great for hiking because of the fires burning in BC, Kananaskis and Sunshine. There were so many and so well spread that the air quality has been down to level 8 (out of 10, being 10 the worst) which means a pretty high health risk. The smoke was so thick that it smelled like barbecue for days and the visibility was so bad that you’d think it was overcast while it really wasn’t. Luckily, the wind changed direction and started moving the particles South and East (Calgary got an ash fall) and the visibility and air quality improved lots for our days off. 

Still, there was a thunder warning for Thursday afternoon so we decided to leave early and stay close to Lake Louise. Castle Mountain seemed a good choice since it’s close and the weather and smoke forecast was pretty good. Besides, it’s a very iconic range that majestically stands between Banff and Lake Louise and resembles (have a guess) a castle. 

We started by getting to the Rockbound Lake just behind the range without a clear plan of what to do next as that would depend on the weather. 

There was of course a sign warning about bear’s high activity in the area: it’s berry season and there’re berry bushes everywhere so you can find bears anywhere anytime. 

The trail crosses a pine forest and it’s reasonably wide and not too steep. We found a few droppings on the trail. Where they bear’s? Or horses’? We didn’t do any DNA tests but it didn’t seem like a horseback riding trail. 


A couple of hours after the start we got to Rockbound Lake, which is really pretty, from where you have impressive views of the back of Castle Mountain and the geological cirque that links Stuart Knob and Helena. 
We looked at our maps and compared both peaks. Stuart Knob turned out to be way further than Helena Peak which is higher than the first as well. Actually, we realised that Helena is the highest of the range. Helena would be the one to go to, then. 

We couldn’t really see a clear path to follow but we decided to follow the route that the GPS was showing. 


The climb was “Tower of Babel’s style” maybe not as slippery but it was a scramble by the book. 

From the top of Helena we had a 360 degrees view of the area. We could still see the smoke covering part of Banff and further East, the storm coming from the West and the ocean of mountains surrounding us. 

At the summit we had a quick bite, took the usual pictures, signed the visitors book and found a little stone structure that guarded a small rusty metal box containing the ashes of a married couple who died years ago. 

When the sky turned grey and we heard the first thunder we were already on our way down to the lake. Descending included a few falls for each of us just as usual. The rain caught us when we were already kind of protected by the forest. What we don’t know is what happened to the guy we met at the Lake on our way down who was planning to run up to Helena’s summit. He definitively got really wet and hopefully lightning didn’t struck him. Enrique & Marina
