SENDERISMO EN KANANASKIS: TENT RIDGE 2400 m

Ya cada vez vamos conociendo más la zona de Kananaskis y es estupenda para ir de excursión. Y como nos apetecía hacer 34 km por la carretera de piedras llena de baches que cruza el valle, pues nos fuimos al Tent Ridge.

El "ridge" de una montaña es lo que en castellano se llama cresta; así que la excursión consiste en subir hasta la cresta de una serie de montañas enlazadas haciendo forma de u y recorrerla entera.

El camino empieza por una zona de bosque muy bonita por donde parece que en algún momento del invierno pasó un elefante así que está todo lleno de árboles caídos. 

Fuimos caminando por el bosque a buen paso hasta que, pasada una media hora del comienzo, nos encontramos con una pareja de senderistas que venían en sentido contrario Nos dijeron que se habían dado la vuelta porque unos metros más adelante había una madre Grizzlie con dos cachorros. Nos entró un poco de miedo a todos ya que las mamá osas son famosas por no ser muy razonables, así que nos planteamos darnos la vuelta.

Pero se nos pasó pronto. Nosotros éramos siete y teníamos spray de pimienta anti osos, que hay que usar como último recurso en caso de que ataquen. Así que nos pusimos los siete bien juntitos y empezamos a caminar haciendo mucho ruido, básicamente gritando “Força Barça! Força Barça!” para no sorprender a la familia osuna.

Íbamos así de esa guisa cuando nos encontramos con un guarda forestal que se estaba aguantando claramente la risa. Nos explicó que lo que estábamos haciendo era lo correcto, ya que él pudo oírnos casi desde el otro lado del valle. Nos dijo que en cuanto llegásemos a la cresta de la montaña ya no debíamos preocuparnos más ya que los osos no tienen motivo para subir hasta ahí.


Subimos hasta la cresta por la ladera sur, saltando de piedra en piedra como las cabras. Una vez ahí empezamos a caminar arriba y abajo como equilibristas, teniendo siempre enfrente los Spray Lakes, donde al acabar la excursión los acabamos bañando. Muy rápido, que el agua es del deshielo y estaba evidentemente, muy fría.

The more we know Kananaskis, the more we like hiking there. And since our car’s got a new suspension, we had to test it well doing 34 km of the gravel road that goes across the valley and stop at Tent Ridge.


The hike is a loop trail that takes you up a range and follows the ridge on a horseshoe shaped path and goes down in a different spot. The end of the trail will leave you just some meters far from the start where you’ll have your car parked. 


The first few kilometres run in the forest where it’s nice and cool. There were many fallen trees. It seem like an Alpine Elephant had walked around there during the winter and now we could still see his trace. 


After only a few minutes we meet a young couple coming in the opposite direction. They told us that they “had” to turn around because they saw a Grizzly bear and a cub playing in the clearing that we were about to reach. For a while we also walked our own way back.


But we quickly reconsidered that action. We were seven in total and had three bear sprays. We re-organised the group so the first and last person carried sprays and also someone in the middle. We kept the group tight and started walking forward again while singing camp songs, the FC Barcelona hymn and other random loud shouts we could think of. In this way, the bears could hear us way before seeing us and would hide or at least not be surprised and scared in case of encounter. 


Just like this we walked all the way within the forest and met a ranger doing his daily inspection clearly trying not to crack up with laughter. He couldn’t see any bears, he said, and, still, no bears would come any close to us because we were doing it so well that he could hear us from the other side of the clearing. Also, he told us that we could stop once at the ridge, where there’s no food and therefore not much wildlife. 



We climbed to the ridge from the South end, scrambling the slope like goats. From the top we could see the Spray Lakes and several different peaks. Most of the hike is just walking along the ridge so we had amazing views pretty much all day, specially of the Lakes. Maybe for that reason we decided to go for a little dip in one of the them on the way back. We have to admit that it was a very very very fast dip because it’s glacial water and obviously very cold.
