Senderismo en la zona de queenstown: lake alta

Al sur de Queenstown se encuentra la cordillera de las Remarkables, en la que hace años montaron una estación de esquí a la que se accede por una carretera de rocas pequeñas, o grava muy gruesa, de 13 km de longitud que nuestro coche ha sido capaz de ascender tres veces en la misma semana. Eso sí, sin pasar de segunda. Hyundai Excel 1.6 del 89. Menudo fiera.
En el extremo suroeste de la estación, en el corazón de la cordillera, se encuentra el lago Alta, que es básicamente el hueco inundado del circo formado por las cumbres más elevadas de las Remarkables: Single Cone y Double Cone, ambas de más de 2000 metros de altura. Y hasta aquí la exhaustiva lección de geología.

Joan, Pol y yo fuimos los valientes que fuimos de excursión al Lake Alta un domingo nublado de diciembre. Dejamos el coche en el aparcamiento de la estación de esquí y fuimos hacia el lago guiándonos por nuestra fiable brújula interna porque las indicaciones brillan por su ausencia. Tampoco importaba mucho porque había niebla y no se veía casi nada. Aquí no se desanimó nadie.
Llegamos al lago en menos de media hora por lo que decidimos seguir la excursión subiendo para arriba, como las cabras, a ver si alguien encendía un ventilador, se iban las nubes, y podíamos tener buenas vistas.

Ascendimos por las laderas rocosas del circo hasta llegar a un punto en que no se distinguía entre la nieve y las nubes, por lo que decidimos que, ante el riesgo de despeñarnos, lo mejor sería volver. En el camino de vuelta paramos a comer y, milagro, las nubes se fueron.

En ese momento nos dimos cuenta de que en la ascensión anterior nos habíamos quedado a escasos metros de una torre de comunicaciones que estaba en una de las cumbres del circo. ¡Mecachis! ¿Volvemos a subir? Qué pereza…

Como teníamos tiempo y con el objetivo de tener unas fotos decentes del paisaje que mostrar a nuestras señoras madres en blogs como este decidimos llegar hasta la torre de comunicaciones.

Desde ahí pudimos ver el extremo sur del Lago Wakatipu, los picos Single Cone y Double Cone de las Remarkables, Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown, el lago Hayes, el aeropuerto… todo muy bonito y pintoresco.
Al final, ya de vuelta al coche, pudimos pararnos en un Lake Alta sin niebla donde incluso tuvimos tiempo de hacernos un autorretrato (selfie) con un nativo del lugar. Un par de días después volvimos a subir, esta vez sólo Marina y yo, a ver si podía presentarle a nuestro nuevo amigo, pero no hubo suerte.
Después de estas excursiones una idea comenzó a rondar nuestra mente: ascender el Single Cone. Enrique & Marina

HIKING AROUND  QUEENSTOWN: LAKE ALTA


South of Queenstown there’re the Remarkables, at the top of this mountain range there’s a ski field that you can access driving through a dirt/gravel road. This is a steep 13 km drive that our nearly-twenty-six-years-old car climbed three times in the same week with no problem. In second gear, let’s tell everything. Measure your words next time you talk about our Hyundai.
At the South-East of the ski field, in the centre of the range, there’s Lake Alta. It’s really just the inundated circus formed by the highest peaks of the Remarkables range: Single Cone and Double Cone, both higher than 2.000 m. And that’s enough Geology for today.

Joan, Pol and Enrique were the three brave blokes who decided to go first to Lake Alta on a cloudy Sunday of December. They left the car in the ski field car park and started walking using their own internal compass, as there’re as many direction marks at the beginning of this track as snakes in New Zealand. However, that wasn’t a big deal because the day was foggy too, and you couldn’t see anything further than your nose. But none of them lost his confidence. No girlfriends, no brains.
They got to the lake in about thirty minutes and decided to try to go a bit further up the mountain like goats do, with the only purpose of giving the day some time to clear out the clouds for them to have goods views.

They climbed up the rocky hillside of the circus up to a point where they couldn’t distinguish the snow on the ground and the clouds. That’s when they stopped and started their way back. They had lunch and, like a miracle made by the Gods, the clouds left.  

Then, they noticed that on their first attempt they stopped just a few meters below a telecom tower located in one of the tops of the circus. Damn it! Shall we go back?

Yeah, right. They had the time and they really wanted to get some decent pictures of the landscape to show their mums in their corresponding blogs. So there they went.

From this stop they could see the southernmost end of the Lake Wakatipu, Single Cone and Double Cone, Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, the airport and so on. All very nice and picturesque.
Afterwards, going back to the car park, they stopped in Lake Alta where it wasn’t foggy anymore and they even could take a selfie with a local. A few days later Enrique and I went back to try to meet again their local new friend, but we weren’t lucky.
After so many visits to the Remarkables, the idea of climbing Single Cone got stuck in our minds. Enrique & Marina
