Senderismo en la zona de wanaka: roy’s peak track

Hace unos días nos fuimos de fin de semana a Wanaka, por eso de ver un poco lo que hay al otro lado de las montañas que normalmente exploramos.
Wanaka es un poco como la versión simpática y relajada de Queenstown. Se puede hacer exactamente lo mismo en ambos lugares pero en Wanaka hay una décima parte de la gente. Esta diferencia se ejemplifica clarísimamente con el hecho de que en Queenstown hay cinco centros médicos (hospitales y centros quiroprácticos) mientras que en Wanaka sólo hay uno.
Esto también tiene un pequeño aspecto negativo y es que Wanaka, a partir de las nueve de la noche, parece un pueblo fantasma por lo que cada vez que vamos nos vemos obligados a cenar a la hora kiwi.
La excursión que decidimos hacer fue hasta la cima del Roy’s Peak. Es una montaña de 1572 m de altitud a la que se sube por un camino muy bien marcado (el granjero dueño de los terrenos puede subir, y seguro que lo hace, en coche hasta la misma cima) que serpentea por la ladera y la cresta de la montaña.
La verdad es que es una excursión perfecta para una mañana (tardamos unas 4 horas entre subir, comer unas galletas y bajar) y no es nada técnica por lo que es la caminata comodín de los wanakianos. Había tanta gente subiendo y bajando que parecía el campo base del Everest.
Las vistas durante toda la ascensión son muy bonitas, pudiendo ver el lago Wanaka, el pueblo, la bahía Glendhu, el valle de Motatapu y toda la variedad de paisajes típicos de la región de Otago.
Volvimos a casa, como siempre, vía Cromwell para comprar melocotones y ciruelas. Están buenos, como siempre, pero como la fruta que tenemos en España no hay nada. Enrique & Marina

English versionHIKING AROUND WANAKA: ROYS PEAK TRACK
A few days ago we decided to spend our weekend in Wanaka with the excuse of exploring a bit the other side of the mountains we normally play at.
We find Wanaka as the friendly and relaxed version of Queenstown. You can do pretty much the same things in both places but Wanaka is probably ten times less crowded. As an example to proof that: there’re five medical centres in Queenstown (including hospitals, chiropractors and the likes) while in Wanaka there’s a single one.
There’s obviously a down side of that and it’s that Wanaka turns into a ghost city from 9 at night and we should have dinner at kiwi time when we stay.
This time we choose a really popular hike that we still had in out bucket list called Roy’s Peak. It’s a 1572 m high mountain and there’s a clearly formed track (the farmer of the land probably gets up to the top with his 4WD ute) that winds up the slope and then goes along the crest.
It’s an awesome half day hike (it took us four hours to get up and down and eat some cookies at the top) and the path is not technical at all so we think it probably is the regular Sunday walk for the locals. We meet so much people going up and down that it gave us and idea about what the Everest base camp must be like.
The views, as always, were amazing being lake Wanaka, the township, Glendhu Bay and Motatapu valley the best features.
The way back home was through Cromwell where we could buy peaches and plums, that are still in stock. They’re good but nothing compared with Spanish fruit to be totally honest. Enrique & Marina
