Mount Temple es la montaña más alta grande y alta de la zona de Lake Louise, con 3544 m de elevación, y fue la primera cima de más de 3500 m que se escaló en las Rocosas Canadienses. Mount Temple es la montaña que se puede ver desde cualquier punto de Lake Louise y que tiene un enorme glaciar en la cima. Así que decidimos subir a verlo de cerca.
Marina, Nyvonn, Mike, Renée y yo quedamos a las 6:30 en Moraine Lake para empezar la excursión. Salimos preparados, con cascos y todo, hacia el Sentinel Pass, famoso paso de montaña desde el que empieza la ascensión pura y dura.
Nada más salir del Moraine Lake empieza un camino de ascenso en zig zag por el bosque. Es bastante pesado pero es también la forma menos cansada de ganar altitud.
Una vez acaban las curvas llegamos hasta el Valley of the Ten Peaks un valle bastante grande rodeado por los diez picos del valle del Moraine Lake al sur, Pinnacle y Grand Sentinel al oeste y Mount Temple al norte.
Atravesamos el Valley of the Ten Peaks relativamente rápido ya que era llano y no queríamos que nos alcanzase ningún otro grupo de montañeros.
Llegamos al Sentinel Pass, que separa el Valley of the Ten Peaks del Larch Valley, y vimos que sólo había una pareja delante de nosotros.
Empezamos la ascensión por la cara suroeste de Mount Temple. La vista de Sentinel Pass es básicamente la de una pedrera enorme y muy empinada con rocas gigantes obstaculizando el camino hasta la cima, que ni si quiera se puede ver desde ahí abajo.
El camino se veía más o menos bien, y en las zonas de duda siempre encontrábamos algún marcador naranja o hito de piedras que alguien había dejado.
Después de un buen rato de caminar sobre piedras sueltas llegamos a la primera zona de escalada con pies y manos. Es una zona bastante cortita en la que hay muchos apoyos para los pies por lo que se sube bastante fácil. Justo en ese momento vimos el sol salir por detrás del Mount Temple.
Después de esas rocas rojizas el terreno cambia de color, entramos en la zona de la veta gris. Seguimos ascendiendo por rocas sueltas pero con mucho más agarre que las anteriores, afortunadamente, ya que este tramo es tan empinado que si extiendes el brazo tocas el suelo.
Al final de la zona de rocas grises hay el tramo más o menos complicado de escalada. Hay que colarse por una especie de grieta y escalar por ahí dentro. No se siente uno muy inseguro pero es mejor no resbalarse porque a saber dónde te paras. El mayor riesgo son las rocas que pueden ir desprendiendo los compañeros que van más adelante, por eso para esta excursión todos llevábamos casco.
Pasada la veta gris el camino lleva hasta la cresta de la montaña donde las rocas pasan a ser amarillas y luego blancas. En este punto todo es roca suelta por lo que se avanza muy lentamente.
Justo antes de llegar a la cima la pendiente disminuye. En ese punto nos reunimos los cinco y llegamos a la cima a la vez.
Caminamos por el glaciar, no mucho porque daba un poco de cosa, nos hicimos las fotos de rigor y nos comimos los bocadillos.
Al ser la montaña más alta de la zona podíamos ver incluso los Columbia Ice Fields al norte y los incendios de Banff al sur, que cubrían de humo todo el Bow Valley.

Mount Temple is the highest peak in the Lake Louise area, with 3544 m in altitude, and it was the first mountain above 3500 m to be summited in the Canadian Rockies. Mount Temple is that huge mountain that can be seen from anywhere in Lake Louise that has a characteristic glacier at the top. Why not checking it out closer?
The climb called for an early start so Nyvonn, Mike, Renée, Enrique and me met at 6.30 at the Moraine Lake parking lot (which was surprisingly half full considering how early it was). This time we all were ready for anything with our helmets, tons of water and food and warm clothing in our backpacks.
The walk from Moraine Lake to the pass is a pretty long switchback trail over the forest. It wasn’t super fun but a great and easy way to gain altitude. And since it was so early we saw a beautiful buck walking towards us on the trail.
After the switchbacks the scenery opens and provides with great views of the Valley of the Ten Peaks on the South, Pinnacle and Grand Sentinel on the West and Temple, North.
We crossed the valley at a good pace to avoid any other groups to catch up with us (the less people in front, the less rocks above our heads during the climb).
At Sentinel Pass, which is where the Valley of the Ten Peaks meets Larch Valley, we crossed with the only couple who we had in front for the way up.
Then it was just about going up on the “right” trail of the Southeast face of Temple. From Sentinel Pass the mountain looks like a massive rocky slope, you can see some bits of the trail but you can’t see the real summit.
The track it’s pretty beaten and in the confusing sections there was always a bright orange marker or a pile of rocks to point us towards the right direction. We hardly had to use the GPS or the map we had.
After a bit of loose terrain, we made it to the first section where you have to actually climb with the help of your hands. It’s not long and there’re many gaps to hold on and the rock is really nice and grippy. It wasn’t until then that we saw the sun behind Mount Temple.
After that part where the rocks were brown/red, we reached a grey seam. We carried on going up this time on loose rocks that were even more grippy than the others before. This time it was even easier because it was so steep that if you extended your arm a bit you would hold on the ground without bending.
After this, there’s another wall that we needed to climb using as many extremities as you have available (up to 4 in our case, we wished for 5, though). We chose a narrow crack that seem to have just enough gaps to hold on to. It didn’t feel unsafe but we were certain that it wasn’t there where we would like to slip. Another risk was all the stones falling from the buddy before you, so you have to be careful not to stand too close to each other. That’s one of the reasons why we chose to wear helmets.
After the grey rocks, you have to follow the trail to the ridge where the rocks were now yellow and then white. At this point the terrain was loose again and the pace, slow.
Just before the summit the slope is less steep and we all caught up and made it to the summit at the same time.
We walked on the glacier a bit, not too far as we didn’t have crampons (I think I took about two steps, I found it too scary myself). We took a few pictures, had our sandwiches and had a couple of sips of the one beer that Nyv carried up!
From the top we could see the Columbia Ice fields on the North, the fires burning around Banff on the South and also the smoke crawling along the Bow Valley. Enrique & Marina
