Senderismo en yoho: bow glacier falls

Para recuperarnos del tute de subir hasta Helena Peak nos lo tomamos con calma y fuimos por la Icefields Parkway hasta el Bow Lake.

Es un lago muy bonito que en invierno se congela completamente. Por este motivo se puede caminar o esquiar sobre él para llegar hasta la zona del valle que tiene al oeste donde hay un refugio de montaña muy famoso, el Bow Hut.

Pero estamos en verano y el cambio climático es una realidad. Con las altas temperaturas el glaciar Bow se derrite (esto pasa cada año) generando una catarata muy alta y muy bonita.


El camino empieza a orillas del Bow Lake rodeándolo por el norte. Pasada algo más de una hora llegamos a lo que sería la entrada del valle, que es a través del cañón que el agua ha ido horadando en la roca.

Pasado el cañón uno se siente un poco como Piecito y sus amigos al final de la película “En busca del Valle Encantado”.

Un valle inmenso, rodeado de montañas rocosas con glaciares a modo de anfiteatro, se abre de repente justo a lo que en realidad es la entrada del cañón. No es un valle verde y fértil lleno de dinosaurios; es una inmensa llanura de rocas marrones y grises.
Para llegar hasta las cataratas hay que cruzar este paisaje lunar un poco a las bravas: el río que se genera por el deshielo del glaciar es un poco anarquista así que va por donde quiere y cuando quiere, así que hay que mojarse un poco los pies.
Una vez llegamos a la zona de las cataratas nos pasamos un buen rato arriba y abajo mojándonos bajo la caída del agua. Fue divertido pero hacía frío, así que volvimos por donde habíamos venido.

To recover from the big climb to Helena Peak we took it easy and drove the Icefields Parkway up to Bow Lake. 

It’s a really pretty lake that freezes in the winter and gets all covered with ice and snow. At that time of the year, you can walk or ski on it up to the west side of the valley where there’s the famous (and almost constantly booked) Bow Hut. 

But it’s summer and the climate change seems to be a reality. The hot temperatures make the Bow Glacier melt (like every year) creating an impressive waterfall at the end of the glacial valley. 


The walk starts and surrounds the North shores of Bow Lake. About an hour after the trail goes deeper in the valley going past an amazing canyon dug in the rock by the powerful stream. 

After the canyon, the valley opens up again and you feel like at the end of the movie “The Land Before Time”. 

The wide valley surrounded by rocky mountains and glaciers forming a natural amphitheatre leads you to the start of the canyon. As opposed to the valley in “The Land Before Time”, it’s not a green valley with cute little dinosaurs playing but a wide flat area covered with many kinds of rocks . 
To reach the waterfalls we had to cross what looked like the moon. The scenery is rough and the river creates many paths every year at thaw so there isn’t a single or right way to cross. 
We played around the waterfall for a bit, climbing up and down the rocks and reaching as high as possible. The impact of the water on the rocks creates a mist that soaks your clothing without you noticing. I ended up really wet and eventually cold. So we went back our steps and called the day!Enrique & Marina
