Senderismo en yoho: twin falls y whaleback

Después de la excursión al Mount Rundle había que reservarse y hacer una salida de recuperación así que planeamos ir hasta las Takakkaw Falls para hacer una excursión-paseo. El plan no salió como esperábamos y nos acabamos liando a hacer 22 km río arriba subiendo hasta el sendero Whaleback para ver el salto de las Twin Falls.

Las Takakkaw Falls son de algo más de 300 m de alto, con una caída libre de 260 m. Son muy altas y se ven desde el aparcamiento. Ahora estaba revisando las fotos para poner aquí en el blog y me he dado cuenta que no hemos hecho ni una de las Takakkaw, qué se le va a hacer.
Nos pusimos a caminar siguiendo el río Yoho, que da nombre al parque nacional, por un camino muy bien cuidado, ancho y llano.
Pasados unos pocos quilómetros llegamos a la Angel Staircase, que es un riachuelo-cascada que desciende 300 m como si fuese una escalera. 

A 4,5 km del aparcamiento están las famosas Laughing Falls, que son sólo de 30 m de alto pero salen a presión de la roca que frena al río Little Yoho. El nombre en castellano sería el de las cataratas que ríen, llamadas así porque los primeros exploradores del area dijeron que este salto de agua hacía sonreír al valle. Pues eso, que la gente de Canadá lleva ya muchos años fumando porros.
3,2 km después de las Laughing Falls llegamos hasta la casa de té de las Twin Falls, que Canadian Pacific Railway construyó a principios del siglo XX cuando el turismo empezaba a desarrollarse desde Banff.

En frente de la casa de té están las Twin Falls, o cataratas gemelas, que caen desde 177 m de altura. Justo al lado de donde golpean la roca hay unos bancos para sentarse a comer el bocadillo, pero te mojas demasiado.

Estábamos en la base de las Twin Falls haciendo las fotos de rigor cuando un señor de Banff nos dijo que se podía subir hasta arriba del acantilado en el que empezaban, en lo que se conoce como Whaleback o la espalda de la ballena. Nos dijo que era media hora; mentirosillo…

El ascenso se hace siguiendo un sendero bastante estrecho que serpentea por el bosque hasta llegar a la parte de ascenso puro y duro por la ladera rocosa. En total hay 2,7 km hasta la cima.

Tardamos más de media hora sólo en subir, pero una vez arriba nos quedamos un buen rato explorando el area.
Fuimos hasta las rocas que dividen la catarata en dos, cruzamos los riachuelos para llegar a ambos lados de las cataratas y estuvimos mirando los glaciares del valle.
Cuando nos cansamos volvimos al coche por el miso camino por el que habíamos venido, que no se nos hizo eterno como esperábamos porque al ir siguiendo el río se hace entretenido.

After going up Mount Rundle the day before, we needed something gentle to recover. The walk that  you to Twin Falls seemed a good option for that. The plan didn’t really go as expected and we ended up walking about 22 km up the river valley and climbing to the top of the falls. 

The hike starts at Takakkaw falls parking lot. Takakkaw falls are about 300 m high with a 260 m free fall. There’re really spectacular, loud and can be seen from the carpark itself. Unfortunately we got distracted and didn’t take a single picture of them. Tough luck, we’re so sorry. 
The trail starts at the carpark too and follows Yoho river on its true right for the first kilometers. It’s wide, flat and well maintained. 
A few meters after the start we got to Angel’s Staircase. It’s a small creek/waterfall that gently falls 300 m over rocks that resemble stairs. 

Only 4.5 km from the parking we found the Laughing Falls. They’re only 30 m high but the water comes out of the rock with a lot of pressure. The first explorers of the area said the falls made the valley laugh and therefore chose its name. You see, dope has been around Canada for many generations.  
3.2 km after the Laughing Falls we go to Twin Falls’ teahouse. The lodge was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway at the beginning of the XXth century when the tourism industry in this area just started. 

The Twin Falls are just across the river. They have a 177 m drop to jump and when they hit the  rocky bottom they splash a lot filling the surrounding air with a refreshing mist. There were a couple of benches to have a snack just overlooking them but you would get wet sitting there. And we were wet enough with sweat. 

We took the mandatory pictures down there and were already looking for routes further up the wall when a Banff local told us about a well formed trail that takes you to the top of the precipice. It’s called Whaleback and it’s a marked trail that he said would take about half an hour… little liar, he was. 

The ascend is a steep strenuous and non technical switchback trail that crosses the forest up to the end when suddenly there’s bare rock. The total climb is 2.7 km long. 

It definitively took us more than that mentioned half hour on the way up. Then, we spent ages at the top exploring the river and the edge of the cliff trying to get the most spectacular views of the valley and the abyss. 
We made it to the rocks that separate the waterfall in two streams and walked across the river on the upper (and very safe, FYI, concerned adults) side. We viewed the scenery from both banks and past some time just looking at the glaciers on the mountains nearby. 
Although Whaleback trail keeps going along the top of the cliff until it drops down connecting with the Twin Falls track, we went back the same way. There was a section just before both trails meet that was washed off, a bridge was missing and Parks Canada had closed that area. Anyway, the trail was pleasant on the way back too, listening to the river and walking while talking one next to the other made it really entertaining.Enrique & Marina
