Steve Howe - Not Necessarilly Acoustic (1994)

Alguna vez lo trajo el Mago Alberto y hoy lo recuerda Horacio Manrique, en esta semana (y la que viene) dedicada al maestro Steve Howe, un álbum en vivo grabado en la primera gira en solitario de Steve Howe y lanzado en 1994, registrado en actuaciones de pequeños clubs en 1993, esta colección en vivo abarca tres décadas de temas de Howe. dividivos en cuatro segmentos: acústico de 6 cuerdas; acústico de cuerdas de nailon; acústico de 12 cuerdas; y eléctrico de 6 cuerdas, con Steve tocando completamente solo, sin pistas de acompañamiento pregrabadas, acompañado solo por sus guitarras, donde destaca, a mi entender, el popurrí de "Topographic Oceans" presentando una sección de cada uno de los cuatro movimientos. Cerrando eta semana bien viene este disquito para que nos recuerden en el finde.

¿Qué habría sido de Yes sin Steve Howe?. Una gran banda pero seguramente no la maravilla musical que supo ser, un guitarrista inolvidable e irremplazable. Un músico excepcional que se forma con la mezcla del más puro y refinado sentimiento y la más alta calidad técnica. El Mago Alberto ahora nos trae un disco en vivo de un personaje que no debe faltar en el listado de nuestro blog cabezón...

Sin lugar a dudas Steve Howe es uno de los mas grandes guitarristas que existe y que va a perdurar en la historia de la música, por su estilo, su innovación, su depurada técnica, y el feeling que le supo imprimir a una banda como YES. Un violero que siempre estuvo a un nivel más arriba de la corriente que venía con toda la movida del progresivo, los punteos más intrincados, los fraseos mas enmarañados, únicamente surgieron de la viola de Howe, y en este mundo de grandes es muy difícil la originalidad, muy difícil el núcleo creativo, él y sólo él pudo potenciar su propio fuero interior musical. Un tipo que pudo evolucionar junto a su propio grupo y darle en cada proyecto su propio vuelo, en pocas palabras un músico en estado puro que nos iluminó el alma con sonidos que transportaban, ensoñaban, y siempre nos dió otro parámetro para gustar de la música.
Se puede discutir la técnica veloz y hasta aburrida de algunos guitarristas, te puede conmover algun solo floydeano, pero Howe es totalmente abarcativo, poderoso, integral, un murallón de arreglos complejos que te llevan a momentos sublimes, casi celestiales y donde se te corta el hilo del globo y te vas al infinito, por no decir a la mierda.
Este trabajo nos muestra a un Steve Howe más íntimo, más profundo, y se da el lujo de reversionarse y pasar de una guitarra a otra sin pausas, para brindarnos un show transparente y que da pequeños toques o pinceladas de su enorme talento.
En un sabado plagado de anécdotas le habia prometido al Vampiro este disco, y nobleza obliga. Un trabajo enorme para disfrutar sin tapujos.

Mago Alberto 
No creo que haga falta reseñar a este disco, es Howe con su guitarra. Listo. Punto. ¿Qué más habría que agregar? quizás una explicación de quién es este monstruo para nuestros visitantes más púberes, pero en todo caso lo puede googlear por mi.

Casi en contradicción con el título, Howe demuestra una vez más que lo suyo en guitarras clásicas es casi insuperable en el ámbito del rock. En este extenso trabajo (algo más de una hora de música), el mix de temas te pasea por casi todas sus épocas musicales desde YES hasta lo suyo como solista. Quizás se equivoca al cantar algunos temas. Sabemos que ese no es su fuerte, además de ponerse en el complicado lugar de reemplazar sonidos como los que sólo Jon Anderson nos acostumbra. Sin embargo, el resto es tan bueno, que esos detalles pasan por alto. Fue grabado en 1994 en el marco de sus primeras giras como solista puro (sin músicos de soporte).
Todo el disco se trata de Howe y su guitarra. Se da gustos, incluso, como el de tocar música de Vivaldi (Concerto In D) despojado de toda la parafernalia que lo rodeó con Yes, Asia (con Wetton y Carl Palmer), o incluso con GTR (con el ex-Genesis Steve Hackett).
Es siempre una delicia escucharlo. Una excelente selección de temas ejecutados sólo con su acústica.

He's still so nervous and tense before and during every gig but his stunning, unique and seminal guitarplay incorporates rock, classical, symphonic, jazz, ragtime, blues and perhaps I forget a few musical styles! On this excellent CD you can enyoy the variety of Steve Howe his excellent guitarplay, from the virtuosic ""Meadow rag" and the delicate "Concerto in 2nd movement to the wonderful "Surface tension" and "Mood for a day" (both on Spanish guitar). Also included are "Excerpts from Tales.." and "Roundabout" and great renditions from "Ram"" and "Clap". If you like acoustic guitar or you want to enjoy Mr. Howe his skills on this instrument (and some electric guitar), THIS CD IS YOURS!! By the way, the beautiful artwork is by ... Roger Dean, say no more!

Contrary to the listing here, this is not a studio album. This is a recording from Steve Howe's 1993 solo tour. And a fine show it was.
The songs showcase Steve Howe's unique style, blending classical, flamenco and bluegrass primarily with just about any other guitar styling that Howe feels like playing. And he can do it alll well.
As the title would indicate, most of the songs are played on acoustic guitars, although a few are performed on a Steinberger electric. The electric pieces are played without guitar effects, giving them a close to acoustic feel as well.
The most proggy song here is obviously the Excerpts from Tales from Topographic Oceans, where Howe plays small but nice pieces from each of the songs from that album. More Yes selections include the obvios: The Clap and Mood For A Day. On Roundabout, he strangely chooses to sing the harmony part he always sings with the band, giving it an odd sound.
For guitar fans, a must. For prog fans, a good disk to own.

In every Yesshow one of the most expected moments is Steve Howe's astounding solos... now imagine an entire hour of live Howe solo!!! And that is precisely what you'll get with this album which, at the same time, is an excellent introduction to his solo work. Featuring tracks from almost all of his albums to date (Beginnings, The Steve Howe Album, Turbulence and The Grand Scheme Of Things) and pieces by Yes and GTR.
As other reviewers pointed out, this album, as Howe's career, is really eclectic by featuring a really big array of styles including country, rock, classical, jazz, blues, ragtime and lots others joined together by his really particular style of playing. The track-list was tastefully selected and arranged with almost no interludes between songs, so the performance flows very naturally. And as the title announces, the instrumentation is not necessarily acoustic since although most of the album is dominated by acoustic guitars there are some electric moments.
A thing that I really loved is the inclusion of Yes classics outside Howe's typical solos with the band such as The Clap and Mood For A Day. Yes' guitar virtuoso performs Tales From Topographic Oceans (presented as a medley) and Roundabout, both rearranged for solo guitar with a very magnificent and simply beautiful final sound, but not only that, Steve reminds us that he is one of Yes' singers (backing vocals in every single album he participated in) with a very apt vocal performance.
If you like solo guitar playing and/or are a Yes fan and haven't listened much of Howe's solo albums, this is for you! Simply amazing and plain beautiful...

This is steve Howe's best solo album an it features lots of short songs that are from his one man performances. This albums features many nice songs that capture steve's amazing guitar work such as cactus boogie which is played on a steel guitar, so far Steve Howe is the only person I have seen or heard about that bothers woth steel guitars. The album also feature Clap not "the Clap" but just Clap thank you, and it also has excerts from other songs and albums. As far as steve Howe solo efforts go this anlong with spectrum and the Steve Howe albums are his essential works. Beginnings is also good to which is his first solo effort. He isn't very big on vocals in his solo efforts but his guitar playing makes up for this flaw. The fact that there is no backing may deter some listeners it is very enjoyable for a guitar player like me to listen to as it provides some inspiration. My personal favorite song on this album is whispering altough it only goes for a minute it is enjoyable and "bouncy". Catctus boogie which I have already spoke about is also a big hightlight. These songs deserve a full rating as do the rest.

This really is a SOLO album; Steve plays all by himself but make no mistake, this album would've been spoilt by backing tapes or musicians. Steve was very brave to perform this set like this, but it shows just why the man has won so many awards over the years. He truly shines on this album, and the sound quality is amazing! If you like solo guitar that's mostly acoustic - then buy this album.

Si estás a costumbrado a los héroes guitarristas virtuosos y aburridos tipo Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, el pelado Satriani, el chancho Romeo, a veces el mismo Kiko y la mayoría de violeros de ese tipo (sorry, pero repito, la mayor parte de sus solos con muuuuy aburridos), venía a conocer un universo nuevo.
Quizás la más pura simbiosis de técnica y sentimiento que uno se pueda imaginar. Toda la magia de un tipo solito con su guitarra... y su enorme talento. Toda la magia que le encuentra todo el corazón a la guitarra y conoce todos los íntimos secretos de las cuerdas.
